My mom got sick and needed surgery in Huatulco, Mexico. NCL called for an ambulance and paid for an interpreter. The doctor spoke English but the hospital staff didn't. It's the most eerie feeling watching the cruise ship you should be on, leave without you. My husband and mother in law stayed on the ship and I stayed with my mom. Five days later I got her on a no stop flight to Toronto and my sister picked her up. I still had 6 days of cruise left so NCL made arrangements for me to get back on the ship in Panama. I had no idea that I was getting back on the ship in the ocean climbing the side of the ship on a rope ladder while the ship was moving. I guess I can cross that off my bucket list. NCL was amazing and so were the citizens and hospital staff in Huatulco. And I'm still great friends with my interpreter.

I have to tell you I love that you stayed positive and make it sound like an interesting adventure rather than a total drama. Other people would have been like, "It was the worst experience of my life... I even had to climb a fricken ladder to get back on the ship." Sounds like NCL took great care of you, too. Is your mom ok?

+Very unOfficial Travel Guides She's great! I was so scared about her having surgery in Mexico but Huatulco has a Naval Hospital and it's beautifully clean. The little hotel I stayed at was within walking distance and the staff and the community were amazing. The people on the street got to know me and would wave and greet me with "Senora Kelly! Hello!" They would leave flowers, food and Cola on my doorstep. It's a beautiful little city. They have big resorts there but I recommend seeing the real people. They are awesome. When I made it to Panama, I really didn't have clear instructions except to go to the Balboa Yacht Club at 4am. A van driver for a company said he would take me to a hotel close to it for $30. Great! It was so far out and worth it. He escorted me to dinner (me paying of course) and we ate on the edge of the water with boats all around and people dancing in the streets. He ordered a $35 steak lol. I didn't care. He showed me so much of Panama City in the few hours I was there that it was worth the money spent. He was very entertaining! My mother has told this story over and over and over again. This was in 2012 right after we lost our house in a fire. My husband and I had been through so much and wanted to have a relaxing time with our moms (who get along like best buddies!) then this happened! I guess you learn to roll with the punches. By the way, she's 84 now and still my world.

My mom was on a ship where a lady actually slapped the captain. The ship missed a port because of weather and as he was explaining this to her, she slapped him! She was confined to her room ( with guards out side) until the next stop. then she was escorted off the ship.

+Very unOfficial Travel Guides I asked my mom about this and she said that it was a trip from Los Angeles to New York that went all the way around South America. Some people got on the ship for just one leg, in Chile. those people were extremely upset that they were not going to go through the fjords. The captain had a "meeting" in the atrium and offered everyone a $100 room credit. the woman stopped him on his way out, yelled In his face and slapped him in front of everyone! The husband and wife were confined to their room with an officer outside. Mom did say that she saw them bring them room service, but they were escorted off the ship at the very next port!

I had a cruise where we missed a port because of a medical emergency. The ship had to turn around to get in range of a helicopter. (A crew member had pregnancy complications). This meant we wouldn't make our 1st port in Jamaica. All that to say, there was a guy who scheduled a meeting in the main lobby to gather people together to sign a petition against the cruise line. (He did his speech without a shirt on if that's any indication of his personality) The captain allowed them to gather and even came to the meeting and spoke to the people. This however didn't deter the man from continuing to try and start a mutiny against the captain. Needless to say, he was kicked off the boat once we got on land. So #6 I guess would be: You can get kicked off the ship for trying to start a mutiny!

You are correct about missing the muster drill. On one of my cruises, the drill was held while we were still docked. A cabin failed to show up, and we all stood at our stations for about 40 minutes. An announcement was made over the PA system that the offending couple were being escorted off of the ship. Once we were underway, I encountered an Officer, and thanked him and the Captain for their actions.

I was aboard a Carnival Cruise 5 years ago when a 'lady' of the night was removed from the ship. She had a very lucrative 'business' going with a small expense up front for her 'place of business.' Although we had already spotted her at the bar beside the casino and had suspected what she was up to, a crew member verified it to be true. Another time 2 young men who was very, very intoxicated and had been warned the previous day, were confined to their cabins and removed from the ship at the next port. Getting home was on their dime.

We were in line for the main dinning room and before we even got under way a gentleman got kicked off the ship for being belligerently drunk. He took on three security officers but was quickly wrestled down cuffed with zip ties and lead off the ship. We will be sailing to Bermuda in October of this year. This will be our first time in a suite with butler and concierge. Cant wait.

I once took a friend on a cruise. He went on the ship quite drunk and, unbeknown to me, quite high. He wanted to eat instead of going to the muster drill, got into a pushing match with one of the crew members, bumped into a man on the elevator, and stormed out to our cabin. During the cruise, he smoked in the room and made a mess of the room (smearing food, etc.), but was never kicked off the cruise.

If you go on a private excursion and the tour is delayed on the way back to the ship, you will be left behind if you are too late. Going on an excursion booked on the ship, you will not be left behind or the shipping company will have you transported to the next port to rejoin the cruise.

I knew a couple that got kicked off a carnival cruise for having a domestic dispute at one of the bars. They left her in the Bahamas. And he was on further room arrest until the duration of the cruise and ended. They do not play around with any kind of violence verbally or physically. she had to spend upwards of $1000 to get back home from the port in which she was left. So just be happy and your cruise will go better than planned.😁

They never said what it was specifically and one of the people we sailed with said he couldn't find anything online about it.

Only one cruise in my life but I will never forget the family boarding in front of me out of Miami; young couple with 2 grade schoolers not allowed to board because they didn't know they needed passports. That cruise was jinxed anyway. The night before we arrived at the Cayman islands a crew member who worked in the ship's store committed suicide in his room. We had an extra long stay while the body was taken off and police came aboard to investigate and make a report. I was glad because I had lost my wallet the stop before at the falls in Jamaica. I spent hours in the AMEX office, they were great. THEN, we never made our first stop in Mexico to let the divers off because we were late. So we stayed late in the sweltering heat at 10PM sitting on a cinderblock wall two blocks high waiting for the ship to signal boarding. Finally, once underway for about half an hour, I was just asleep when the ship violently tilted to the sides and did a vibrating turn. Much of the pool water spilled onto the balcony deck and flooded the hallway, it smelled musky after that the rest of the trip. Turns out they had left some 14 year old in Mexico. He forgot to get back on board, so they had to go back for him. If I was smart I would have gotten some money back. It was the, "Frustration of the Seas". I just haven't had the urge to go back. I like Club Med.

@lexievineyard52557 жыл бұрын
The first one he said isn't true on all ships because it's your option to go off the ship. The ship will not hesitate to help a sick person but if you don't want to get off the ship they won't make you they'll just make you be locked in the room. In 2012 I went on the carnival magic and some guy that was with the group I went with fell off the side of the ship and landed on deck five (I believe) which basically extends out a little and he died. Carnival cleaned up everything and put him in one of those body bags and offered to fly him and every one of his close friends and family to fly home at the next port, they denied and he stayed on the ship.

FYI, concerning your first point, all cruise ships are required, by law, to have a morgue on board. Annually, some 200 passengers die a year on US cruise ships. Not surprising considering the number of older, retired people getting a cruise off their bucket list.

Hello Morgan; long time fan here. While I've never seen anyone kicked off a ship I have seen people denied access twice. Once, as you mentioned, for screwing up their paperwork (boring). The send time was when a couple arrived amidst a huge fight that they were having and ready to rock and roll. The line kept them off the ship which, of course, only got the two of the even angrier with each other. I don't that their travel insurance would have covered that.

Its amazing to me that people think they are going to avoid the muster drill when the computer knows you arent there. Hope they get kicked off or fined for not being there it makes the whole thing longer than it needs to be. The crew compared the names of people who were carded to a hard copy roster of who should be there. If you have been on 50 cruises and done 50 muster drills suck it up and do the 51st muster drill, its the law.

Very unOfficial Travel Guides I was on the Poseca idk how to spell it. I was 16 at the time and had higher expectations from cruising with other lines. I'm used to the American way of cruising, this was very European. First the food was terrible and outside of a meal time I couldn't find any food. No food? it's a cruise ship rip. The one night they had lobster in the main dinning room it tasted like dish soup yuck. Second as a 16 year old I expected a teenager only area with all day activities for us, thats what you get on most cruise lines. What we got was 45 minutes in one of the small clubs before the bar would open and they'd kick us out every night. Some kids program lol. Third I can't remember how many ports we had but we had excursions in Playa del Carmen ship refused to stop there had to stop in Cozumel. Found out from talking to several employees they never stop in Playa del Carmen. Then we missed Grand Cayman all together. Talking to the the staff they seemed to have a much harder time then staff I've talked to on other lines. The only plus is that at the time they ran an offer for a free cruise to anyone under 18 with the full price cruise of an adult. Well at least it was mostly free. I even had an extra special name for the line while on the ship My Sh*tty Cruise. Our whole cruise group had to agree, and most of them have been on 20+ cruises. So my opinion is if you want a really good time stick to the major lines Royal Caribbean Carnival Norwegian Princess ect.

THEN 4 hours out someone had an MI and we had to turn around. He was also reported as doing well, but we were now in port almost 9 hours after our scheduled departure. But with a sea day ahead we were pretty much on time for our next port. THEN a guy went overboard. Only be didn't. One of the other guys in his cabin thought it would be funny to Day they saw him jump. So funny that said joker spent the night in the brig (yes, they have one) and was introduced to the USCG the next day. First cruise of the Carnival Magic.

Holy crap! How much drama can happen on one cruise?!?!
@tammyboyer31998 жыл бұрын
A few years back, our debarkation was delayed due to policemen coming on board with a dog, and walking out with passengers wearing handcuffs. We happened to be on the same floor, so saw it all go down except for the obvious arrest itself.....never a dull moment on cruise ships!
@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides8 жыл бұрын
Wow. I wonder what the "bad guys" did! If the police had a dog with, maybe it was to sniff for drugs?
@tammyboyer31998 жыл бұрын
I strongly suspect it was drugs.....I think the island we had been to just prior was either Bahamas or Jamaica.....they probably brought back "special" souvenirs ;)

Very unOfficial Travel Guides let's hope not. I'd be in trouble if I was behind that ice cream cone lady though. I don't often hold my tongue. Maybe there's one more thing you could lend some advice on. I'm a big guy,6'6 and broad, am I going to be overly uncomfortable on a cruise ship in your opinion? I know you won't have any personally experience but if there's any advice you can give based on what you've observed I'd gladly take it.
@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides8 жыл бұрын
Wow, you're more than a foot taller than I am! I don't think being on the ship will make you uncomfortable, other than in the cabin, maybe. Cruise ship cabins are like really small hotel rooms, so you will feel cramped in there for sure. Also, stay away from the balcony railing when you're really drunk!
@danlepine97617 жыл бұрын
Very unOfficial Travel Guides excellent. We'll probably end up paying a little extra and go for a balcony even though we wanted to start out modestly for our first cruise. Wouldn't want to have a small room to put a sour taste in our mouth for future trips. I really appreciate you taking some time out of your day and fielding my rookie questions. Im sure you'll see me commenting again from time to time. You gained a subscriber.

I've never been on a cruise, is muster drill like the safety briefing on an airplane, were you can sit there and ignore it, or does it require participation. Because you know on most flights the safety speech is not an inconvenience since nobody is paying attention anyway.

Well, kind of. You have to go there and stand with your group, so it's not like you can watch TV the whole time.

One time in Mexico, my brother and I were on the taxi(?) getting to the port from the ship. it was just the two of us and one other guy who was being escorted off by security. we asked him what was going on and he said he was being kicked off for being too drunk and smearing feces all over his room. (True story). And then he leaned over to us and whispered something about a weed stash hidden and to inform his friends. He said they were kicking him off without allowing him to have contact with anyone in his group. So he put it on us to get in contact with his group and inform them about his weed. And yes we made the effort and drunkenly made it our journey that day to find his friends and let them know what happened. We succeeded.

I haven't seen many over the top cases of people being rude to crew members but there was this one time where I was talking to my sister and I cursed in my sentence. I didn't see any children around. Apparently there was a mother with her child and she confronted me and made me apologize. I apologized and then she said "This is what you deserve" and she threw her alcoholic beverage at my face (and I am a minor).

Last month I was on the Carnival Freedom. I was originally going to be on the new Vista during the December break, but things changed and I went on February vacation which was not too bad because almost no school districts do February break anymore so lines weren't as bad as they would have been during the Winter break, but I did have to say good bye to a nicer more modern ship. The only thing was that they were not expecting so many people for breakfast one day so it took over an hour to get our food.

when I went on Norwegian Dawn somebody had medical issues and they had to close the 13th deck because a helicopter was picking up the person
@caseyvee44196 жыл бұрын
Same thing happened when I was on Norwegian Epic once, only they just had to shut down the forward part of a deck so no one could get to the helipad. It was on a TransAtlantic cruise from Barcelona to Miami. Oldest group of passengers I have ever seen. There was the one removed by helicopter, another taken off on a gurney in port, and I was told one death on that 2 week cruise. Was never able to verify the death, ship was quiet about it, but with 2 weeks of 4000+ passengers who appeared to average about 80 years old, I would not be surprised. I was a bit over 60 on that trip, and about 90% of the time any passenger I was talking to was older than me.

i have been rude to cruise staff all of 3 times, once because the gal dumped juice all over me, and kept making it worse.. and twice because they did shit like grabbed the controls of my mobility scooter and ran themselves or their co-workers over with my scooter..with me in it.. the one gal..her supervisor found me later and gave me a voucher for a free drink, for not being more upset, after she kept telling me to back up, then reached over my shoulder and ran her own foot over so bad her shoe and sock where off her foot..she made a very angery sound and gave me a dirty look... i just told her, thats why had not backed up yet...and said "dumbass" loud enough she could hear it but not angerly or meanly... her sup said she had to go have them mole skin where she ran herself over, it wasnt bleeding but was weeping and had stuck to her sock.. (ouch been there), i had some zink oxide first aid cream (always bring at least a couple tubes of zinc oxide cream, be it first aid cream or diaper rash cream, the stuffs a life saver), i kept a brand new tube on me, when i saw her, i gave it to her, and told her to use it on her foot, and pointed down.. she was south african, black, and, she turned to chocolate strawberry milk... LOL...so much pink.... later she thanked me, they where not really allowed to take "gifts" from passengers that way from what her super visor said, but, she told her and showed her, and, she found it ok that i did that as a nice gesture, i mean i get why she was annoyed, but, she needed to slow down, and think, before acting... and, realize, everybody was feeling pressed, it was the first day and everybody was trying to get to their rooms... the only time i saw anybody get into any kind of scuffle and not get kicked off... one of the bridge crew and somebody from the customer side got into it, turned out they knew eachother in jr.high and they where both fucking assholes, and both had a few drinks that night(afik the crew member wasnt really sposta be drinking but...well..that just made this happen more quickly, but also likely lead to it being over alot more quickly), with 2 drunk idiots both in the pool, and a bunch of people gawking and laughing at them... they had a damn slap fight... eventually devolving into a few poor punches and 2 grown ass men, likely in their 50's or 60's, rolling around in rough weather, talking about shit that happened decades earlier... in the end, both where sitting neck deap in a pool that was sloshing like a half full cup in a drunk whos fighting the DT's hands... when they looked up and around... then at eachother... all of a sudden you could see a couple school boys... sheepish.. and..then... they both almost at the same moment started laughing.. and sputtering because the ship was a rockin and the where in the pool..as it sloshed around..LOL.... neither of them where taken off by security, hell i told them, that i would bet them another cruise that the fight was over, and the 2 would be buying eachother drinks and talking about people and things they shared in common... i wasnt wrong... but the security fellows also wouldnt take the bet, when we told them what happened.. not one could hold back a grin, if not a full smile, bridge crew brawling... wtf.... either way... i also watched 12 people get booted off because the mother got drunk(didnt want to waste her booze package so she was hitting it as hard as they would let her...).. she got so drunk... she attacked a cardboard cut out of the mascot, then, walked into the alchemy bar, and, i shit you not, i saw the end of this part. chugged a bottle of malibu coco nut rum(well what was left) some of a bottle of applewood estates rum, grey goose vodka, and a few other things, a few chugs, or less if she couldnt swallow and spit it out.. anyway, yeah, when security did show up, she was so drunk she couldnt talk in sentences, and needed something to hold to stay upright... they actually took her to the brig then as soon as they made dock she was turned over to authorities, her husband was lucky he actually had already called security when she started acting nuts, and he and the rest of their multi-cabin group didnt endup booted off or banned..... they nearly gave her a lifetime, but, i was told that several people went to the capt and requested he not do that, she was showing signs of a psychotic break or manic episode and, i agree with what they said, it would be wrong to punish her for life if, as it sounds, this was something that was far from expected or the norm.. temp ban was what she got, but..to rub some salt into the wounds, they gave the family a discount and cabin credit for their next cruse, with an expire date, 6mo before she could sale with them again... non-transferable... even the small kid got one... i got a feeling that, and dealing with the legal system in the bahamas... not knowing if they could endup stuck there for a long time.. prob a very good "you need to get help, and, avoid booze if its going to contribute to that behavior" (the 16yo daughter told me that they actually got a call on the last day, she was going to fly back and meet them at the airport, she had fines to pay, and had to pay for what she did...(the booze bill was over 1500bucks alone..they charged her by the shot for each bottle she drank from...the whole thing... at full cruise rates.. ), i gotta say, and the husband(who kinda befriended my parents...or the other way around? my father and him shared a huge love of the same sports teams), he told us carnival actually helped her get flights and gave her a ticket to ride their shuttle to the port to meet her family and get her belongings(and sign the papers saying she understood she was banned for X amount of time), the husband/father and my father are connected on facebook....one of under 20 people my father has as friends on facebook...he wont even add me... (cannot blame him honestly.... i would annoy him to no end calling out him sharing cnn/buzzfeed/fox quality reporting as fact... i think the crew handled the weird situation i saw and was not really a part of but...was close enough to witness her going off the rails and hear the families take on it... i also think, they had a bit more understanding since, she only lost it after a few days of rough as fuck weather and her being stressed out because, she logically knew the ship was fine, but, emotionally "we are all going to die" ... could easily be that stress that caused a psychotic/manic episode in somebody who never had issues anybody really noticed before... the husband, kids, and the wifes mother and sister went on the cruise the family got at a discount.... they even gave her a discount...shes also a plat member... shes taken so many cruises she and charlie(gal who about lives on carnival cruises, and is well known), could probably compete on who has more cards saved up... she found it very amusing that her daughter who was always the good straight laced one, was the one who got kicked off a ship and arrested for trying to drink every bottle behind the bar, before security got there.. (i have met her now, shes a bloody riot.. omg.. shes what my grand mother would have been like, had she not gotten stomich cancer and died all too young.
