5 Years With The Submariner - How My Perceptions Of The Most Iconic Rolex Watch Have Changed

In the coming weeks, I’ll celebrate the 5 year anniversary marking the acquisition of my Rolex Submariner (Reference 116610LN) for a milestone birthday.
The Sub (or Subby as I call it) has always been a grail watch for me, and out of all the watches in my current collection, it’s the one I’ve had the pleasure of owning for the longest time. One could almost say it’s a pillar of the collection or the main battleship of the fleet!
In this video I discuss the general perception of the watch among enthusiasts, how it relates to other watches I own or have experienced, my own changing feelings towards it, and what I would like to change about it if I could. Do I still consider this the greatest Rolex watch of all time? Watch to find out!

And this is what I truly love about your channel, you discuss thoughts and ideas we all have. You love your watches (as do I) for what they mean to YOU and not what the average person will think of you. You sir are pure class and I very much appreciate it. Get well soon, my prayers are for a quick recovery.

This is the 41st year that I have owned my Submariner 5513. I received it at 17 when I joined the military (from my Mother). The watch has been around the world, been through combat from the jungle to the desert, been through aviation crashes, fires, it was on my wrist when severely wounded, it has been covered in blood, both mine and others that I tried to save (some yes, others no). While it is only a watch, it will never just be a watch, it is a testimony of a life lived. I started a large collection of watches about 15 years ago, but it will always be the one watch that is synonymous with my life, my scarred and battered, dinged and scratched, always faithful Rolex Submariner. It will be with me until I am gone. best regards, D

THE I hate to say it. But for real you are correct in thinking of selling it. Experiences in life by far trumps any watch in my collection. It's a tough one. I'm disabled so I would probably always choose experience over my beloved Submariner 14060M in my own collection. Life is extremely fragile and can be taken so easily. I would go for it and go experience Japan. Excellent video my friend. Good luck with whatever you decide. Bottom line is enjoy life for every second you can. Cheers.

I'm relatively new to the watch community but I have been collecting fountain pens for awhile now. My advice from one collector to another is; if a piece is just sitting around and not getting any love, sell it. Rotate the collection. Unless it is a very sentimental piece of course. I find once you find the perfect piece it doesn't matter how long it has been in your collection but as you use it, it has to remind you of why you love it. Some times you just have to sell things and then you realize how important they are to you, then buy them back. So in the end you appreciate them so much more. In my opinion, from the way you were talking in the video, it sounds like you should sell the good old Subby and then see how you feel about it. All the best and you make fantastic videos by the way. The quality is top ten on KZbin.

Very interesting video. Our tastes do evolve over the years. What'll probably happen is in a few years you'll come around and wish you hadn't sold your Subby. But then again, using the funds for such adventures is worth it. Really hard to say. I know you think Grand Seikos are a bit cold but who knows you may come around to them in time too. I put off wearing my GS for a few weeks and then it feels oh so special all over again. Decisions, decisions! By the way, I'm getting over this damn flu as well - best of luck to you to recover quickly. Ciao, John

I just picked up a 114060 two weeks ago from my AD - the symmetry is simply unbeatable. The watch just looks so well balanced. I prefer no date watches personally, which is why I have an OP36 and BB36 as well in the collection; I find the cyclops on the Sub throws off the balance. It is an outstanding watch. It's hard to look at a watch's enjoyment relative to the price - if that were the case, we'd all wear Casio F91s. I get as much joy wearing my $340 CAD Dan Henry 1964 as wearing my $7K OP36 - but I enjoy them for entirely different reasons. That's the best thing about this hobby!

Not gonna lie, I'd sure like see you strolling around downtown Tokyo with an explorer on your wrist, maybe sipping on some tea under a cherry blossom. My advice would be to let it go, it's provided you gratification for these past years and as you say it's been amazing, but the love you once shared has faded away. I say cherish the memory and move on. The explorer is, my opinion, the quintessential watch, and it suits you very well. Along with the datejust and the navitimer, what else could you possibly desire? just my 2 cents, but as you stated traveling will enrich your soul in a way no object could do. Just my 2 cents my friend, whatever you choice is I'll stand behind it!

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. The only way to know if you are going to miss it is to put somewhere where it won’t be accessible to you for a while, say 6 months. If you miss it, then don’t sell it. If its absence doesn’t bother you go ahead and sell it. My guess is that you will miss it, as I missed my grail Rolex after I wasn’t able to access it anymore.

Thanks for the video TGV! You raise a very important point and that is the fact that enjoyment is not always proportional to monetary value. Something really similar happened to me. I've had my trusty Explorer II for 7 years now, but about 6 months ago I bought a grail watch without realizing it for the fraction of the cost, it's a Sinn 556A on a bracelet. For some unknown reason, that little Sinn has filled up the niche of the Explorer II and after half a year enjoying the Sinn I might let the Explorer II go...

Very nice review. Recently purchased 114060. Had been leaning toward the date model. AD only had this one (only one). I’m so grateful he sold it to me, there hard to find and I’m sure he had a waiting list. Anyway I figured if I really didn’t like it would be easy enough to sell. Well I’m in love with this watch, love not having the date, love the large case, my favorite is the blue lume, bezel action close second.

Seikos, Bambinos, Seikos again, Orients and Hamiltons - travelled so my train of thoughts, higher and higher on the mountain of Price. Finally, yesterday my Seiko Sarb033 arrived, and I'll... I mean, we will be in the honeymoon phase for the following week for sure. But I think my lungs wouldn't enjoy the hilltop air, instead, I will do some hikes around this beautiful area. But in my humble opinion, it's inevitable for one to reach such altitudes on this mountain, that he has to reconsider taking one step back and reuse the potential force to take other journeys, to other landscapes. I'm thankful for you purchasing my ticket on this journey and I wish many further explorations for you as well.

Great vid TGV! from the heart and honest as usual. I say let it go and travel, life is too short and who knows you may come back from Japan with a GrandSeiko ;) I sold my Sub last year after 10 years of solid use, yes it was sad and I did suffer sellers remorse for a while, but it was also freeing as I was able to look at different pieces I otherwise hadn't considered. Get well sir !

Those memories you have with the Sub will not disappear if it does. You will always have those with you regardless of whether you own the watch or not. Sure it's easier to recall those memories when you can look at it on your wrist but they won't be impossible to remember without it. The question really is of two things: preservation of old memories or creation of new ones. For me at least I always elect to create new memories because life is to short to constantly burden myself with preserving former versions of myself. I say go to Japan, go to Germany, and create new memories all along the way with the Explorer! Cheers, BC

You bought it when you turned 30. I wouldn’t sell it. Keep it Tristano! You’ll regret it later if you sell it. Trust me!

I'm praying for your lungs and your being able to spend the next 100 years buying hundreds of watches and traveling. So, speaking for all of your friends out here, we don't want to hear any more negative talk about your not being around for your centennial anniversary as a KZbinr! OK, I'm done with the scolding . . get well soon, TGV!

Do not let the watch become a handcuff to adventure and exploration. You can always go back and get the watch years later but you can not say the same for your youth. Happy travels and I pray they are always in good health.

You know, I have a 116200 with a black dial and the oyster, and I will turn 16 in a few months. I am not very old, and many would consider me as a child, as I do myself. I got into watches because of you, and my dad's old subby. I have owned this watch for 4-5 months by now, and for the price of it I could have bought a room full of TVs and top of the line gaming stuff, but I don't regret it. I have thought about it a few times, but i always come to the conclusion, that it's not always about those peak moments, it's about the bigger picture, or the "long run". I sometimes get bored of wearing the watch, but I use another watch for a while (like a week or so), and the feeling comes back. I get a lot of happiness and comfort when I look at the time. I have also been to a lot of places and done a lot of things with my watch there with me, and it somehow reminds me of those small moments of joy, that are worth grinding at school for. I really deeply think you shouldn't sell your sub. My dad is not a watch geek or anything of the sort, but he sure does love the "memory capacity" of the watch. I am glad if you read this, been watching you for a long while. I love my Rolex, and I hope you do too. Ps. The sub might as well be the best watch in the world. I know it when I see it, and I also love the similarities it shares with my watch, it's just bigger and sportier than the 116200, but my watch does remind me of my dad's watch. There are a lot of similar watches, like the GMT, or the Black Bay, or the Pelagos, but it's never quite the same.

Don’t sell the Subby, one day it will go to the next generation in your family. When I look at my watch I remember my father and the good times we had together. Save little money every month and than when you can you travel to Japan and Germany. Wish you the best.............

After owning my Sub almost 43 years I still enjoy it. It is no more my dayly beater. I have two Phoibos for that. I was my dad's present for surfing and did the job for decades. Now I still enjoy wearing it but not for surfing. Enjoy yours!!

A longtime grail of mine but have a hard time justifying the cost. If I do buy eventually buy one, I don't think I'd allow myself to buy another watch. Great post. Hope you're better soon. Keep it! Save for the trips.

Perhaps 30 years from now, when you reflect back to the adventures you had in Japan and Germany and you still have the submariner on your wrist, the very submariner you acquired on your 30th, your first grail, and maybe perhaps at that time this watch is still a timeless classic... just perhaps...!!!

I use to think like this... when I am finally sitting there (hopefully still with a clear mind) at the home for elderly waiting for my turn... what will I actually remember most of my life? It will certainly be people that I have met and that I have known in combination with experiences from many years of traveling and certainly not my things. At the end of the day my experiences will always be much more important than my things... but with that said I can still understand your fascination about the Sub. And by the way keep up the good work.

It's funny, I can completely understand your opinion on the sub, however watching you interact with the watch and all of the discussion has made me fall more in love with this watch, and very much confirmed my decision for my upcoming purchase! :) Watches are all about feelings and how you feel about them, i've fallen out of love with watches before - sometimes only a bit of ownership time can confirm which are really for you!

Do u need 3 Rolex watches? Do I need 100+ watches? My reply is I certainly do not NEED 100+ watches. However, as a passionate collector, the qty is irrelevant. U can certainly buy back a sub but it will not be the same one u hv before. I always remind people, everyone hv a sub but my sub is not identical to others as it tell MY story. TGV, which is the longest watch u own now excluding the pocket watch?

TGV, you should have just titled this video “Farewell to a Faithful Grail”. Your tone of voice and monologue seem to already say that your heart has decided to sell dear old subby to fund future projects. At least that’s why I perceived. ;p
