"Maybe up to 50,000 soldiers face being encircled, that can have a cascading impact."
Arrests and firings of senior figures in Russia's military could have an 'accelerating disunity' among Russia's troops in Ukraine says Major General Chip Chapman on #TimesRadio.

3 kilogrand sounds a lot. Can Ukraine afford to feed and accommodate them? Or would they be better off disarming them and giving them back, after they promise to be good boys in future and not run around invading their neighbours? Frankly I'd say that safe channels should be opened so that either the Pootin feeds them or picks up the bill. (Payment in gold would be preferable, no?)

@@stephenlyon1358 Gawd yes. Russian's *best* hope of surviving the war is to be captured by Ukrainians. Ukraine is following the geneva conventions. Russia is torturing, burning alive (the Mariupol defenders), and castrating Ukrainian prisoners (hundreds documented). The russians have talked about their officers shooting russian soldiers too wounded to fight and then there is the video of that russian soldier committing suicide because he knew there would be no attempt to get him to a hospital. Sad thing is-- Russia already lost the war. Germany didn't lose on D-day. Japan didn't lose when Hiroshima was destroyed. Both lost over a year before that. Like German and Japan, Russia is in the endgame of their losing war.

With respect to Stalin "giving" some land in the west to Poland, it should be remembered that he also took a lot of land in the east from Poland - including the historic Polish city of Lwow (now Lviv) and a large chunk of Polesia - and gave it to Ukraine, which was of course under his direct control at the time.
@Qvadratus.
@Qvadratus. Жыл бұрын
oh again these Poles are crying about Kievan Rus' lands. it don't belong to you, never was. Stalin never took anything from Poland, he returned Rus' lands. and not even all of it. some was left in Poland where Ukrainians was repressed and moved to the Western Part of Poland from their historic lands.
@FangPaw
@FangPaw Жыл бұрын
@@Qvadratus. Why the emotive language and negative tone? 1. If you look at a map of pre-war Poland (389,720 sq km) compared to modern Poland (312,677 sq km), you will see that far more was lost in the east than was gained in the west. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_changes_of_Poland_immediately_after_World_War_II 2. It's a matter of historical perspective. In the 16th and 17th Century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was one of Europe's largest countries and a military superpower. Kyiv was part of it, and the capital of the Kyiv Voivodeship of Poland. So to say "never was" is factually incorrect. 3. I accept that the Polesian lands to the East of the River Bug were the subject of some contention between Poland and Ukraine before the war. Again, it's a matter of viewpoint. 4. Kievan Rus was a thing in the 11th Century. Not really relevant now. 5. Lviv has been Polish, on-and-off, from 1434. It's never been in Ukraine except for a very brief period in 1918 before returning to Poland when the 2nd Polish Republic was formed in the same year. 6. "again these Poles are crying" is deeply insulting to the Poles (I'm not Polish). Poland has made no moves whatsoever to recover Lviv from Ukraine, was the first to meaningful military aid in the current war, opened its borders to Ukrainian refugees and has given more support, as a percentage of GDP, than any other country.

The only thing that will convince many Russians that the war is doomed to failure is to see St. Basil's in flames. Just like it took James Bruce, Eighth Earl of Elgin's burning of the Summer Palace to convince the Chyneeze that the Celestial Empire was a hollow shell, and that Great Britain's industrial capacity was far more potent than their tea, silk and porcelain manufacturing. Russia needs a similar, harsh lesson that's visible all across their eleven time zones. Russia is kaput, as the Germans would say.

These Times interviews by this interviewer are really very good. Informative and well put together. Just to say, on this interview I'm not even half way through and both interviewer and interviewee, have specified talking about Russia doing something. It seems they actually meant to state they were talking about Ukraine, doing something. Possibly easy to do. But if the one spoken doesn't correct, the other needs to (especially if the interviewer). If not the post editing should certainly catch and correct that. It's quite a critical thing to get wrong. Might seem daft.
