So "Hamburger" is a German word (native to Hamburg), that was borrowed into English (as hamburger sandwich or hamburger steak, because such things were supposedly popular in Hamburg), changed meaning (by becoming a shortening of those phrases), and then got borrowed back into German, all in (presumably) less than a century.

There's a German vocal group called Wise Guys that does a wonderful song called "Denglisch" about just how much English is creeping into German. There are 4 or 5 verses and as they go, each one has more and more English and the last verse has almost no German at all!

In the U.S. Midwest, we do use "pullover" as well as "sweater". The difference is the "pullover" doesn't have buttons, (and, thus, it is "pulled over your head" to wear), while a "sweater" has buttons up the front. USB-stick is a "flash-drive".

Hier muss man auch zwischen Fachsprache und Alltagssprache unterscheiden. Ein Wasserhahn heißt ja auch in der Fachsprache Auslaufventil. Evtl. ist WLAN im Englischen auch eher Fachsprache und WiFi eine Art Oberbegriff, den man im Alltag dafür verwendet .... hmmm ...... Wifi hab' ich aber auch schon hier in DE gelesen.

einige wörter sind keine anglizismen sondern haben nur den selben ursprung beispielsweise aus dem lateinischen wie z.b. rekord/record. das wort "hamburger" hat hingegen seinen ursprung tatsächlich bei der stadt hamburg (siehe wikipedia) und wurde somit ins englische aus dem deutschen übernommen. "nationalpark" ist auch kein anglizismus.

Besonders in den Balkansprachen haben sich enorm viele deutsche Wörter eingefunden,egal ob es um Technik oder Autos geht. Ein kleines Beispiel aus der albanischen Umgangssprache : "Auspuh" = Auspuff.

Here in Australia, we do say USB stick, as well as flash drive. Also, the "power out" is used in motorsport, meaning full throttle to get "out" of a situation: "If in doubt, power out".

Als Deutsch-Kanadier haben wir zu Hause eine Sprache gesprochen die wir "Gerglisch" genannt haben - also eine Mischung zwischen German und Englisch. Da haben wir oft englische Worten genommen und Deutsche Endungen dran geklebt. Zum Beispiel anstatt "We are going camping" haben wir "wir gehen caempen" gesagt. Oder, anstatt "Eis", haben wir "Eiskrem" gesagt.

Das schöne am Deutschen ist, dass wir für vieles Fremdwörter, aber auch deutsche Bezeichnungen haben, die man synonym einsetzen kann, zum Beispiel Computer und Rechner. Das macht es ziemlich einfach, in einen Text ein bisschen Abwechslung zu bringen.

I believe the sound of German with your mouth (the sound of “r” - which is pretty hard to pronounce correctly from us, German learners (I learn German from Romanian, mother tongue), the sound of “t” which is not simple “t” inside the word an so on...) So, German is beautiful but is very hard for us to speak it like you (I would love to can do it, maybe after some 7,8 months with intense learning). You have such a beautiful voice. 'Handy' is an English word: It is used to mean 'useful' eg : That is a handy tool / That is a handy bit of information etc - literally: Handlike oder: Handlich :-) Actually, it makes perfect sense how it is used in German, just in a very specific use, for a phone !

When I was a kid in the north the common word was 'jersey'. I learned 'jumper' from other kids when I went to school. Jersey is an older word from the gansey/jersey fisherman's 'pullovers' from the Channel Islands. Jumper is taken from an old word for a coat.

German does a similar thing to Dutch when adopting English; something like 'best seller', which is two words, is made into a single word. E,g: longdrinkglas (highball glass); cassetterecorder. There's also a habit of always adding a definite article. In Dutch (and e.g. French) the adoption of the verb 'camping' is as a noun - De camping/le camping! The place in English is a 'campsite'.

When i first started to learn German about eleven years ago, the first word i came across was das Fenster, Obviously, i found it without its gender which in this case is Das. So the first thought that crossed my mind was that Fenster was some kind of synonim to the english word fence.Just Imagine that Fenster existed in English. And as more people are bilungual and read the news from overseas or just study overseas, they change their own language and drop in foreign words. Mostoften the simple rule is: The shorter word wins.

If you trained really hard in the gym, in germany you would say: Ich hab mich total ausgepowert. / Ich bin total ausgepowert. Meaning: I have no power/strenght left. In germany the normal word here for a gym is fitness studio. For us a Gym is to near to a word of a school: Gymnasium.

WLAN is a technical term which is actually an acronym that stands for "Wireless Local Area Network". Wi-Fi is basically the marketing/product term for this and "WLAN" is only used in America when discussing computer networking in a technical sense, not colloquially (and as you said, most non-technical English speakers would not know it.)

It's more or less random, when a technical term becomes colloquial or not. I think in Germany it has been the experts talking about WLAN introducing it to the public and the language, not so much any marketing people. Or since everybody in the 90ies had a LAN Router to connect to the internet, of course the next step was the wireless LAN Router. Germans are more engeneers problably.

Yeah I'm from Florida and at one time or another I've used USB stick, thumb drive, flash drive, or just USB drive. USB stick sounds normal to me as well. Also WLAN is "Wireless Local Area Network". Wifi is a brand name but it stuck LOL.
