Evangeline Parry, have you read (I think it's) Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes? It has a moment that takes Peter Pan's opening line to an entirely different, haunting place, and it becomes horrible and beautiful and tragic in completely new ways.

My favorite opening lines (guess from which book?): “If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them.”

"Atonement" is a must, both the book and the film. I sobbed so hard at the cinema and couldn't calm down for 15 min. afterwards. My friends were so embarrassed as I sat there in front of everyone, sobbing hysterically. What can I say, I'm a History (and English) university student that cries when watching historical documentaries, and "Atonement" really hit a nerve.

Ruby, even if you don't see this, I feel a need to thank you with all my heart. My mind struggles to find words that could at least try, to describe the strange beauty of this video. Not a beauty that is commonplace as in seeing a flower bloom or gazing at a star-studded sky. Beauty as in being carried to a land far far away, to a time unknown, sitting by the light of melting candle at the depth of the night and listening to a friend read. It was magical! Thank you!

"Coraline discovered the little door a little while after they moved into the house." That line is such an attention grabber! I love your choice of opening lines, your presentation of them is lovely, and your video is produced very well: the lighting, the sound quality and the music very subtle in the background is nice. By complete coincidence, I too did a video, "First Lines of 50 Greatest Novels." I had never seen yours, I swear I did not copy your idea, it was just an amazing coincidence. I was delighted to see your video just tonight, here at home in the Southern California desert, on a dark cold night cuddled with my dog, Mike. I do like my video on 50 opening lines to great novels, but I think yours is better. You have a very pleasant, engaging manner that is very likable to viewers. Interesting how we chose such different production styles to present the same idea. Well done Ruby! I'll subscribe!
