Been hook gripping for about a month now. At first the pain was excruciating, but each deadlift session I incremented the weight that I hooked before using wraps and I can now proudly say that I've set a 5 rep pr using the hook grip with only a small amount of pain.

When I am doing Deadlifts on my last working set and on my last rep I hold the bar for as long as I can at the top which is usually 5-10 seconds and I have found this has really improved my grip strength and built the hell out of my traps. Now someone may point out this is wrong but this is what I find has helped me and my grip strength has never let me down on Deadlifts.

To minimize pain you don the just wrap thumb under fingers.. you actively pull down on the thumb with your fingers while lifting (almost as if you're trying to wrap it around the bar even more). This one tip has helped HUGE. A lot less pain because the bar isn't crushing the thumb as much

@Darkrobot69 11 жыл бұрын
TehPandaChina Unless youre going over 3 plates, you won't feel much strain on your thumb at first. Going heavier you will feel a bit of strain, but you'll be used to it by then from using it with lighter weights. Now as for the nerve "dying" that won't happen for years of hook grip use from what I've been told. I still feel my thumbs as normal as a few months ago. Nothing new.
@TehPandaChina

Darkrobot69 Appreciate the response. Good to hear it still feels good. I'd probably use that Hunter S. Thompson quote about now, where he talks about wanting to have finished his life with his body exhausted and drained, rather than finish having something that he's carefully maneuvered and manipulated into old age, because as he suggests, what was the point in that. He wanted a life lived. Roughly the same for us in the this position. We both enjoy lifting, something that brings joy and fulfillment and have found something that will take us that extra step. When someone asks you why you can't feel your thumbs when you're older; "well fuck I lifted like I wanted it".

Matt G Well I'm 6 foot 1, and for some reason was gifted with 6.5 inch hands measured from base of hand at wrist to the tip of the middle finger, and that's not taking into account how much shorter my index finger is, it's way shorter in comparison than most so it makes it even more difficult. I'm significantly above average height and somehow my middle fingers are the size of most guy's pinkies. You'll be fine man, Watch Clint Darden's video "PainLESS Hookgrip: How To", I found it incredibly useful. And ALWAYS use chalk on the outside of the thumb as well as the hands, hook grip with small hands just doesn't work without it.

You can dude. I have very small hands and my fingers are hillariously short. I tried a couple of times in the past and when I loaded weight I always got scared of the bar slipping. Whatever weight you can handle is a good weight. Your body is different from everyone else. Body building is not about how much you can lift, or how much you can compete, it's only for your purpose, and that is to build the body you want. So remember, you're doing this only for yourself. Whatever weight your body can handle is the perfect weight for you. Also, you've probably heard this a million times but, perfect your form! Work on that perfect deadlift form before you work on heavier weights. One bad rep can lead to life long injuries. Remember that. As long as you're focused, know what your body can handle, and be smart about your lifting, then you should be perfect.

Try gripping the bar with an over hand grip with your preffered hand, and with the other hand, an under grip. By having this grip, it helps counteract the bar from rolling/slipping from under your fingers. Works a treat!

sigurd2498 dude my grip strength is fine. but during my back workout i do a ton of excercises with 30 sec rest periods high internsity. deadlifts, sumo deadlifts, rows, shrugs, barbell, dumbbell. i dont care how strong my grips strength gets, it will always give out before my back, and i wanna make sure i push it to failure as much as possible. im not a powerlifter dude, why do i need to hurt my thumbs whenever doing deadlifts when i can use straps and focus on what i want to train instead? i dont care how much weight i can lift, im not ego lifting in the gym trying to look cool. i workout for the pump and to build muscle. its about priorities

elliot, can you please do a video on shoulder position for deadlifts? i don't slouch my shoulder to a point that my upper back would round, but when the weight is heavy, my shoulder automatically drops down even though my back is still straight and i think my form suffers here. do i need to keep my shoulders "shrugged" during the whole movement? it looks so stupid and weird if i do that so i dont know how to fix it. thanks bro and keep up the good work!

I was doing shoulder press at weight i normally can perform 6 reps at, but halfway through my 4th set i felt a massive shiver like when you listen to your favorite song, and all the pain was gone from my muscles and i did another 10 reps. I use regular grip, hook grip, and straps. I just use straps for heavier sets. But straps do not correct flexibility issues or muscles that are a weak link in the chain, therefore, straps do not technically increase deadlift unless you have grip issues where you are not getting a lot of reps to build lower back, hamstring, and trap strength etc.

I remember watching a video by Mike O'Hearn where he said that he uses double overhand grip up to 400 or 500 pounds. I thought it was crazy at the time since I couldn't even double overhand 225. I started using double overhand for every deadlift with no gloves and no chalk and now I'm pulling around 300 pounds that way and the bar never slips. I know that 300 pounds is not that much but it just shows that grip strength will improve if you give it time. Most people don't have the patience though.

Some of Louie's opinions i do not entirely agree with . He's a big believer in assistance exercises being 80% of the workout and being there for only an hour. And yes you can do the.thumb wrap with anything like this. Dead lifts, stiff leg dead lifts, high pulls, heck you can wrap you're thumb on just about any exercise that involves pulling

Idk if there's a name for it, but the Under-Over grip definitely helps. When you deadlift heavier with the Double-Over grip, the weight wants to roll out of your hands. But still deadlift as heavy as you can with the Double-Over to gain grip strength.

Anybody know if this should be attempted on pressing movements? Or should I just stick to the standard penitentiary and/or regular grips..?

I would love to use the hook grip regularly but I'm a guitarist and both of my thumbs are very important, so I won't risk it. I tried it once and the sensation was ominous, so I heeded my body's warning. I have a decent grip anyway (can use double overhand up until about 150kg), but hook grip is probably a great option if you don't need your fingers/thumbs to perform any fine movements.

Mixed grip (one supinated and one pronated hand) and chalk will help you grip the bar better when it comes to heavy ass weights.

So, I don't have a problem with my grip, but how do I improve my bottom portion of the lift? Basically, thigh down.

Yo Elliott! :P I have been Deadlifting for about 2 years now and i usualy dont wrap my thumb around the bar when im doing warmup's but when i get to over 140 kg (308.5 pounds) i start using a normal overhand grip. i dont know if that's good but i imagine that it helps my grip strength. is that so or are an i just wasting my time? Respect fom Stockholm Sweden!

The hook grip has been used for 900-pound deadlifts before. Those were some severely bruised thumbs. I will say that most, if not all, people will drop the bar before it rolls out and breaks their thumbs. It is still a possibility but it is a somewhat remote one.

I had the same problem. Quickly realized my grip was my limiting factor to my deadlifts. Than I started flipping tires for a back/leg/stamina workout. Didn't really work my back and legs, but I could bearly make a closed fist the next day. After a couple workouts, I noticed my grip during deadlifts lasted far longer than before. As stated on here, basically train the muscles in your forearm and get a stronger grip. Tire flips, I found, is awesome for this.

***** I looked on craigslist for used gym equipment but every asshat wanted a couple hundred dollars for one. Then searched under junk/antiques/farm equipment and boom. Found a guy that said if I come pick it up and get it off his land, I can have it for free. Good luck searching.
