Your miter joints need more strength, so check out how easy splines are! In this video, I'll walk you step-by-step through how to make wood splines, and why you need them.
Not only do splines help increase the strength of your miter joints, they're also the perfect place to add some additional design details by using contrasting wood species in the spline!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this project and as always, let me know if you try this one out! Tag me @SpencleyDesignCo on Instagram so I can check it out!

Glue is actually stronger than lignin, on an end-to-end joint versus an edge to edge of the same size, you'll break the wood along the grain at lower force than it takes to break the end-to-end seam. The reason people say it's a "weak" joint is because when you glue two boards that way there's a lot more leverage and force being placed on the joint than on the boards run edge to edge in a panel. The various different mechanical joins (tenon, spline, dowel, lap, bridle...) add more directions of contact that the glue holds together.

Jigs make it so much easier and accurate. A lot of people don’t know about spline joints and it’s a good option depending on the project and tools you have on hand. Great job covering it and let’s continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼

I did my first spline joints on a shadow box build I did and it made it one so much stronger and two super aesthetic. But I did so without a jig and the end was just as good as people who use a jig.

I built the same jig last weekend based on somebody else's video. I made mine too tight and it did not slide smoothly on the fence. A bunch of time sanding the inside of it corrected the issue but I sure wish I had seen your video with the paper trick before I built my jig. Thank you for sharing.

They are far more useful than just for strength... I love the look it provides to the edge of a joint and dresses it up considerably, especially if you select the right wood type (color) to offset the main parts.

I like the idea of using a table saw, router table, edge sander and track saw because not everyone has access to "specialized" joinery like biscuits, dowels and pocket holes. Does the person exist who has a table saw and watches woodworking videos that can't pull off dowels? I mean just those four microjig clamps and the router bit is $100 I bet which would also get you into everything but a domino. You could even buy a used biscuit joiner and cut spline slots with that. I know the rebuttal here, I just think the caveats are always funny on these videos. Why not just say here's a cool vertical panel slot/miter/spline jig (because it is) without making weird excuses for it.

Wow, Splines are so easy to do right on a table saw, without any extra jigs etc. Why do you make it so unnecessarily complicated ? No jig or fancy cut plywood is necessary.

Love it. Yet i see so much wood waste it seems when the cut off happens. I always do my best to use as much of the wood as possible so cut off is way less. However the projects always covers that cost but still. I like to be as efficient as possible.

I just bought 1/4 sheet (2’x4’) 3/4” thick at Home Depot in Indiana. No flaws or voids on either surface. No voids visible on the edges but that’s because I sorted through the whole stack. I’m sure there are some small voids internally but I don’t even want to know what marine plywood costs. I paid just under $59 USD.

“Woodworkers always get this wrong”. What I thought you were going to address, you got wrong like so many others. If the spline fits the slot perfectly and you don’t apply glue to both the spline and the slot, you are not gluing all of the spline joint.
