We invited pro player @AndreaMengucci to finally help us determine if money means everything in Magic. We played 3 Pauper decks against 3 Modern decks for science!

This is probably just a selection of Mengu's favs but a great selection nonetheless. Actually, Faeries decks, UB Terror and Walls are pretty close to modern decks, might attack the meta more favourably were one to do this type of format battle more seriously.

They were picked because Andrea selected decks he thought he could win this with, and honestly, he would have won vs scam if I hadn't had an amazing hand and if I had chosen to go for it on turn 1, and he would habe likely won vs rhinos if on the play :)

If nothing else, this video confirms that Mengu is not just a nice guy, he’s an absolute terror when he plays his Affinity deck. I’d love to see more format vs format matches (especially wackier match-ups like Legacy vs cEDH or something).

The Rhinos matchup is just a terrible one for non-blue Pauper decks. There are a lot of top Pauper decks that can win that fight. Elves just isn't one of them.

I feel like Pauper was much more "definitively" stronger than Modern before Modern Horizons. Pauper got useful cards from rarity downshifts, but Modern got way more from the rares and mythics.

Modern sideboards are extremely powerful and Pauper decks are easier to disrupt so probably gets worse unfortunately.

Sides would not help, but if we ran this again, it could go any way :) Andrea would have likely won if I had played anything with scam on turn 1, and he would have been extremely favored on the play vs rhinos

Also jamin tapped out against an aggro deck, that was a mistake, agianst aggro you're the control deck, and need to manage the board. Also turn 2 shredder is awful without a bauble to get connive

Yeah the deck really looks great, reminds me of affinity atog that i used to run when i was a teenager, the deck was so OP and it seems like it hasnt lost any power by the looks of it

This was way closer than we expected! Andrea would have easily won game 1 if I had decided to go for the "scam" on turn 1, and he would have likely won game 3 on the play :)

I remember back when I started in 1996 I played a mono red Goblin/burn deck, no rares, and did really well against most of the other decks at my LGS. I think my favorite card in that deck was Goblin Grenade.

I have just started the video, but here's what I think. Pauper decks are incredibly tuned and optimised for what they want to do and the power level is definitely there. However, the mana base is slow and does not have efficient fixing or ramp, outside of tron decks. That leaves modern decks to come out of the gate much much faster and often combo off before pauper has set up. That said, some pauper combos, say walls or flicker tron, can lock out any deck it comes up against. Modern does have better removal at its disposal, at lower (or none) mana cost. end result : pauper can win but will struggle against a strong modern opening hand or efficient removal. Modern will take a close victory. Hope I'm wrong but can't wait to find out.

In my group we play EDH decks against casual Legacy decks, they are even. We have also tried getting Conquest into the mix.

Free for all: You build decks depending on the format, including banlists. Your life totally is based on the format you built from. What makes this different from other formats is that you fight decks from other formats. A paper deck vs a modern deck vs a brawl deck vs a commander deck, that's just free for all format!

Would have loved to see a best of 3 style match-up for each deck. Honestly, a lot of the pauper deck losses felt a bit down to bad luck (on the draw against aggressive decks) or the modern deck having the right tools at the right moment. Not that I think Pauper would have necessarily won, but would have been nice to see how consistently they lost or how close to even they really were.

Affinity is close to the same price as the boros one and is relatively cheap (about 35-40€ if you include sideboards and shipping, about 20€ without. The most expensive deck is the elves one

14:43 It's rhinocerotes, third declension Ancient Greek, like platypodes. The e is the part that makes it plural, the t and d are part of stem but the t disappears and the d gets turned in a u in the singular form because d and t can't be next to an s. You may recognize the t in rhinocerotes in words like keratin. If we wanted to apply English grammar to it, the singular should become rhinocerot rather than the plural becoming rhinoceroses or something, or just call it nosehorn(s), like in all the other Germanic languages.

Price was not a factor in the deck choices. I think Andrea simply believed these were the decks with the highest chance to bear modern decks
