I buy the non-vintage Champagnes and I try to keep 3-5 bottles at a time. Along with my other wines but I'm starting to enjoy Champagnes more and more. I purchased 2 bottles of Costco's Brut Champagne and I was impressed with the price. Especially if I feel like drinking Champagne for no particular reason and don't want to open a more expensive bottle. Thank you!

More people need to shed the notion that Champagnes are only for celebrations. I suppose one barrier is that it costs more to find and drink "good" Champagne than it does for still wine. And contrary to popular notion, NV Champagne ages nicely as long as they're cellared properly. They may not develop the same complexities as vintage Champagnes, but age tames aggressive bubbles and allows tertiary notes to come forward. Of course, that's if you like that sort of thing.

Many years ago, my New Year’s resolution was to drink more Champagne, if you love it, drink it.

This was so fun! I love tasting different champagnes and sparkling wines. It’s my favorite thing to drink when I’m just chilling at home. Thank you for the video. Cheers to you, and Merry Christmas! 🎄🥂✨❤️

It depends on the occasion. I would open a vintage Champagne for a special occasion where I would drink NV as an aperitif on a Friday night.

Fun and informative tasting, Matt! I'm always looking to not pay more than I have to for wines of good quality. Not having a depth of experience with Champagne, it sounds like I'd be happy with NV. Thank you!

As you say, Champagne is very complex, so much going on with these wines, so many characteristics and attributes. Honestly it is hard to keep it all organized in your head when tasting, especially blind. Had to watch the video a couple times, learned a lot! Also hard to boil down preference of vintage vs. NV because there are so many stylistic differences. I prefer leaner, brighter Champagne and focus mostly on Extra Brut, Brut Nature and lean Brut bottlings. The big yeasty, oxidative styles are unattractive to my palate (sorry Selosse!). I prefer grower-producer over grand marques, and vintage over NV -- generally speaking but subject to stylistic differences :-)

Thank you for watching! You were right champagne is complex and there are different styles for every palate

Here's a different angle, I like to drink Extra Dry Champagnes as opposed to the Bruts. They're generally hard to find, but I currently have some Heidseck Monopole Extra Dry which I'm enjoying very much. Lots of toasty goodness in a bottle. :-)

Good call as the high acidity in Champagne needs a bit of RS

Had the Laurent-Perrier grand siecle n26 last week and while it was amazing, we opened a Chartogne-Taillet that was a third of the price and nearly as enjoyable. I rated the 26 two points higher. Chartogne-Taillet is an amazing producer but hard to find

Sham pain: a specific manifestation of hypochondria. I had that Rare back in August and was unimpressed and did not think that my being underwhelmed was a function of its youth. Additionally, I agree that the C. Heidsiek brut reserve is, in most releases, one of the most satisfying of the NV Grande Marques

I did bring the rest of the Rare to a high end Champ blind tasting and it was a big hit…

What I don‘t like about NV Champagne is that you never know how long the bottle has already been sitting on the shelf and they don‘t age that well. Hence, I had some really bad experiences opening an NV bottle after two or three years (which should be no problem). I really like your content, though!
@drmatthewhorkey3 күн бұрын
That is a legit gripe

It’s way too early to drink 2013 vintage champagnes, especially the Rare, so it’s not surprising that these don’t compare favourably to the entry level bottle. Need to lay these bottles down for ten more years to really see their quality.
