In this video I discuss what you should buy for your studio on a £5000 budget. This is a question I am often asked and the answer always remains the same. When you are getting started with building a studio you should concerntrate on 4 key areas and build from there.
1. Your room should be the best you can afford. Acoustically treated and as accurate as possible.
2. Your speakers are very important. Making the correct choices for your mix or master high depends on your speakers.
3. Your interface and converters should not be forgotten about. Using good quality conversion ensures playback is the best it can possibly be.
4. Your computer does 99% of the work in your studio, having a good computer that can handle the tasks you need to do is very important.

1. Self built Windows PC -> disregarding the graphics card, you can't spend more than £1000 anyway 2. Whatever it takes to do the best acoustic treatment possible (self built, off the shelf). Not a few panels but rather full surface coverage in full range absorption (30cm minimum) 3. Rest on monitors As a reference: DIY treating 100% of my 20cm2 basement cost £1500, my monitors are £2000 (DynAudio 3 Way monitors) Pls Paul don't recommend any audio interface upgrades or anything in this price range. The acoustic treatment has to be done to the absolute max before upgrading speakers and at that point you will be able to run them off of anything. Not having a good time response in the bass region just is worth nothing

100% agree about treating the room. Recently helped girlfriend treat her room , with panels we made ourselves and even a false roof . The difference is literally night and day. Just playing music on a phone in the room sounds so clear, and walking into another room it is literally like somebody has put a blanket over the phone, you almost have to hear it to believe it.

Buy something you'll work on that has fast, nice workflow, computers are the worst in this, 1000000 options with a workflow made for writing novels; but it depeneds on what kind of music you're working on. In 90% cases it's O.K.; you're not a top producer yet. Monitors it doesn't matter as much as you are used to them and you are listening to ALL music on them, so you have a reference points and your ears are use to them. The room of course has to have some treatment but again, it doesn't have to be perfect, you have to "know" your room, work in it a lot. It's like driving your car or your neighbours car. You know your car 1000 better, ever small thing it does. Converters have to be in the high end range, now that's important (in my opinion) ... But all things asside, the most important thing is that you like what you do and you enjoy while doing it. :)

5k? They’re lucky. I started with a lot less than that 7 years ago. Now I’ve got an ng tubeeq that’s worth that alone. Good call on the treatment. Didn’t do mine until I went to college. As a producer I still believe that the less you have, the more creative you have to be and you explore avenues you would otherwise not explore

I once went to a new "semi-professional" studio in Dakar (Senegal) equipped with a pair of focal twin6s (€1900 each), but the dimensions of the room as well as the insulation panels were very poorly made. One day he sends me a mix that I listened with my Yamaha HS5 ( in a modestly well treated room) and unsurprisingly it was a total mess, yet in his room it sounded good. To say that the treatment is a priority in my humble opinion because at least for 300€ of a pair of monitoring you will hear exactly 300€ without sound alteration and without risk of big "error".

I would spend 70% of that money for acoustic treatment and acoustic design. Rest is just a piece of cake, as in well treated room, everything works as it should. Period.

Totally agree Speaker/Room is about 50/50 Still strange to me how often you get these KZbinrs showing you their newest 2000$ speakers in rooms that are treated like McDonald’s restrooms

Hard to do with 5K. Computer 3K + audio interface 1K + studio monitors + 2.5K, acoustic treatment 3K, + mic and miscellaneous 0.5K = 10K

I don't know, I don't think you need to spend a ton on the interface depending on your needs, and you can get really far with £200 headphones instead of monitors, which prevents a big need of acoustic treatment.
