Ouch. The layered shapeless look. We’ve all been there I have a simple rule - only one loose or shapeless piece allowed at a time. If the top or sweater is oversized or chunky, wear leggings or slim pants to balance. If the pants are loose and flowey, the blouse or sweater should be more close fitting. Easy peasy, as they say🌼🌸🌺💐Happy Easter

When someone commented that "you're really old now" (didn't wish me happy b'day even and it was my 81st). I quickly educated the person that old is a matter of the mind... if you don't mind then it doesn't matter... and that I don't subscribe to "old", vintage is so much nicer! So happy to find your channel and appreciate the education. I especially love your natural look, you're beautiful. All great tips, except wearing pointy toed shoes… At my age, 68, I have destroyed my feet by shoving them into shoes that are inappropriate for healthy feet. We continue to tell women that spiky heels and pointy toes are sexy. Sexy is not what’s on your feet, sexy is an attitude. ❤
@princesslehaha7 ай бұрын
Oh I just did a rant about that up there. If anything, pointy toes will kill your feet, and yeah I did that thing in the 70's and 80's. Now I wear shoes that are shaped like my feet. My feet love me. Pointy toed shoes also age people. Because they belong in the 80's.

I still believe you wear what you feel good in. To appease the fashion police they can’t tell you off if your happy and show it,
@candygirl75867 ай бұрын
There's no looking pretty in pain. There's no fun to be had when in pain. I look hard for shoes that look and feel good then buy them in every color. These gems are very hard to find. Flats do not work for me or anything binding through the toes. High arches are and issue and flats provide no support for arches that desperately need support. Shoes... this is a good topic but can be a difficult one regardless of age.
@cheryleaston68206 ай бұрын
Totally agree. Pointed shoes do not go well with bunions at all. After wearing 4 inch heels to work for many years they have ruined my feet. I do agree that the large floral prints are awlful on older women. I think woman have to wear the clothes not the other way around. All good suggestions.

Yes, totally agree that black hardens us as we mature. I embrace navy as its very smart in accessories. I try to wear dresses on my knees or above as I also found it makes me look more youthful. Silver jewellery looks so refreshing. We can embrace our age and look beautiful as well with subtle changes in our clothing and accessories.

Unfortunately, I cannot agree...🙈 Although the orange really does freshen up the look, scarves like this are not something that younger women would wear. This is actually an older lady look. So if I want color close to the face, you just shouldn't choose a plain white shirt. 🤷🏼♀️

I 100% tuck in all my tops, or wear “cropped”, waist-length ones. I turned 64 today, so, yes, my tummy is a bit rounder than in my youth, but the advantage of improved visual proprietor far outweighs that. I also still wear “mini skirts”, but as a petite, they are longer on me, a few inches above the knee. I have thickened a bit around the middle, but am still slim and I like to show my shape and my legs. But, I also love midi skirts. Those long maxis are cute, but not very practical, I’ve found. I don’t want any more of them, especially the fuller styles, they can be a nuisance, if not downright dangerous, to wear. Thanks, Deirdre❤

I really enjoyed your video. What you say is 100% spot-on. One thing you really need to add is: STOP wearing trainers with everything. I am so sick of the sight of nice outfits spoiled by grotty trainers at the end of the legs. Sure, trainers fulfill a need sometimes, depending what you're doing but please, not with every outfit. Shoe shops here seem to stock 70% trainers and only 30% smarter shoes and it has become quite hard to find something comfortable and smart and isn't a trainer. I'm 5' 7" and I don't need high heels, just a smart casual shoe. Oh, and I'm 71. A youthful 71, though.

This is the first of your videos that I have seen. I saw most of my clothing, and have done most of my life. I am an extreme hourglass, petite woman. I have battled weight issues all my life. But I have stabilized for several years at a good weight. I have always known that the Luz trophy stuff doesn’t look good on me. I never color block And I do look for simple. Well fitted designs. But you will not catch me in a sweet little floral print they make me sick. An independent strong woman doesn’t wear sweet little florals. I do on occasion make bold florals, and I know it’s going to be a one season dress, but I made it. I can then later, cut it up into something else, I always roll up the sleeves on my shirts and I always unbutton them a couple buttons and it does make such a sophisticated, sexy understated look. So I appreciate almost everything you said, and I do have more “comfortable“ shoes, when especially when people are wearing dresses, if you’re attending an occasion where you’re wearing a dress bite the bullet, and put a more delicate shoe on your foot! Thank you I look forward to more videos.

Fantastic advice, all excellent points and wonderfully illustrated. I especially agree with avoiding, especially if like me you are not very tall, skirts that are too long, big floral patterns and chunky jewellery.Thank you so much for these great tips

Deidre, The look on your face in the "old" outfits was priceless. Hope you are feeling better. I lived in England from 1989-1990, and the big flowers made me think of the cabbage-rose wallpaper one always saw in bed-and-breakfasts around the UK at that time. Another good reason not to wear them on our person. Looking like a B&B just isn't stylish! There are certain clothes I won't wear anymore since I entered my 50s--not because they look bad on me, but because I've been there, done that. I think sometimes letting go of a few of our old go-to's is great way to freshen up our wardrobes and to look refreshed ourselves.

I am turning 55 soon and live in a city full of young people. Yesterday I was wearing a long shirt with huge florals, and a fitted top. I was feeling so old bc of this. So I start looking for advice online and lukily pop with your great advice!

I really don't think it helps woman to approach fashion like its not okay to be the age you are, its not a cfime. I want to look good, not younger. I am 62 years old and I can accept and honour that.

I know, right? I waited my whole life to wear beautiful and sophisticated "old lady" clothes and I'm going to! I once saw a Vogue layout on clothes for women 70 and over; they didn't look like young women's clothes, but they looked sophisticated. That's my target.

Sophisticated vs frumpy. Two different things entirely. Notice she was wearing the same items of clothing in ways that looked frumpy and then more sophisticated.

If you watch the video she states this is about not “looking older than you are”….which is helpful.

No one who watches any "How to..." videos should get mad at the host for her/ his suggestions. The point of watching videos like this is to stay on top of things, reconsider how we style/ wear our clothing and make adjustments or changes that make sense for us. If you disagree with the host of the video, who has all good intentions, then watch something else.

Hi Deirdre, I agree with all you are saying but I also know that you styled that lovely gold coloured pleated skirt from Mango in a video about 2 winters ago and made it look fabulous. I think you wore it with your heeled tan coloured long boots. So it is possible to wear longer skirts and stay youthful as long as you style the skirts properly and you're extremely good at doing that. Keep it up! I enjoy your videos very much.

Your "Style Expression" determines what size Jewelry, Prints, etc. look best on you...just as wearing the correct colors do. I NEED larger, bolder jewelry and people have even mentioned larger pieces don't look large on me. When I try to "get current" by wearing smaller, it isn't good!
@edennis85788 ай бұрын
She's mistaken, anyway. According to Who What Wear, " Low-Key Over: Delicate Stacking Necklaces Buying Into: Bold Collars" so dainty is passe and bold is in.

Just found this video & got some great ideas from it. Love that you show examples of Dos & Don’ts - visuals make great impact. Viewers who don’t like it can just move on to something else! Take some new ideas and try them out, do what works for you but w new appreciation & eye for the overall impact. So many women, even younger ones, get stuck in a rut w styles that once worked for them in a different time. You change & the world changes. I look forward to watching more of your videos!

It's very hard to forsake the black clothes around here (with 5 months of winter, at least), they are still the most flattering for the mid-section as well. In the summer it's easier to mix in whites, light blues, etc. but I still have to be very careful of that area.😏

I don't know where you live but I tend to opt for bright colours in the winter to cheer myself up

@@debbievidal9536 That can be fun occasionally, but with the weather in MN it can also look kind of ridiculous.

LOVE this video as usual Deirdre, BUT the rounded toe for a shoe or boot is essential if you have size 8 feet, as I have. The pointed version you suggest only makes my feet look longer, and any boots with welts too. Rounded toes are perfect (ballet flats) for making large feet look neater and smaller! Xx

Just come across this. I love the tone of your video- not patronising, and also, I like the clips of you wearing good/not so good clothes. Thank you. I’m 70 in September and have decided to stop wearing sweatshirts- my ‘go-to’ look! I’m told that I have great legs, but never show them! Need to think a lot more about my style. I do love stylish clothes, but I know I need to lose weight to be able to wear them. Im on that, and have lost 6kg so far, another 6/7to go!

SO many great points! The late Jean Muir stood by wearing Navy instead of black for women of a certain age - and I totally agree! I still wear some black, but whenever I can, choose Navy! It’s so much softer near the face, and at least for me, extremely flattering. 🙋♀️🇺🇸🥰‼️

I saw a colour specialist a few year ago , my colour was "autumn" which included navy so now only the odd pair of black trousers/ skirts but never wear black above the waist.

This is such good advice. I find black makes me look quite drained and washed out so I tend to keep it to bottoms, or break it up with a scarf. I much prefer navy or charcoal grey for dark neutrals.
