Just finished doing this on my E46 (2005 325ci). I'm no mechanic; the only other thing I have ever done to a car is change the front brakes and rotors. Your video gave me the knowledge and confidence to complete this job. Thank you.
@kevinlin71485 жыл бұрын
Your video made the process smooth for me. I turned the spline toward me so I could aligned it correctly the first time. The hint about the indent on the shaft is useful too. The irritating play of the steering is fixed. It was surprising to me that the little bit of play in the joint translates to so much movement in the steering wheel.

I'm ordering this part today, as mine is 17 years old and there's a slight vagueness/slack even after replacing both tie rods (inner and outer), but not harsh like you would expect with a worn rack. Thank you for a clear explanation and video!

Thanks for good video. I have few comments what i think about that job. When i did that guibo for my car, it was possible to put that lower shaft even it has that black plastic guide 2-3 teeths off from center. You have to basicly go drive with car and see i it is in center. If not, then move it 1 teeth to other direction. Another top tip. It is really important after loosing bolts from guibo, center steering wheel and take keys away from lock so it is centered and locked. Now steering wheel and airbag slip ring will not be damaged if it spins too much when changing guibo. bought new bolts from bmw.. Price was 2-3 eur / 2 bolts,included new threadlock. t. Noise is the ICV vibrating backwards and forwards at a million miles an hour. I always thought they were open or closed but read a strip down review on one and its in motion. It's why cleaning them only lasts a little while, you need to oil the bearing inside too or just buy a new one. It'll throw the 'icv stuck open' code even though it seems to clack backwards and forwards easily. TLDR, it basically vibrates.

Great video. I am going to do this as well and just wanted to know if anyone has done this and after installation your steering wheel ends up misaligned? I read this somewhere and was curious to ask before doing this job
@50sKid6 жыл бұрын
If it's misaligned that means you completely turned your steering rack 360 degrees... which, i dunno why you would do that. That's why there is the black alignment notch on it. You can't screw it up unless you turn it 360 around.

Hey 50's kid. you've helped me a lot since I've been working on a neighbors e46, thank you. My question is can you also feel the play by rocking the front wheels side to side as well? Can you mistake this problem for bad tie rods? Thanks again.
@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't rock as easily as tierods. You'd have to be moving it so hard that you're moving the steering rack in and out and then feeling the play in the giubo. Jack up the car, get under it and look at the giubo when moving the tire with your hand--visually rule it out. Same with the tie rods.

Great videos, as a fellow E46 owner, your videos are a great source of info and super easy to follow so thank you :) At the 1min mark, you turn the steering wheel with the ignition off, is this 'play' in the wheel not related to the steering lock? Thanks again - ps. would love to a see a video of a PAS fluid flush/change - that's next on my list of preventative maintenance jobs :)

Love your vids, thanks a mill!!! Steering column question...I've got a click in my steering column close to the steering wheel. I've swapped the guibo, and the slip ring, neither of which turned out to be the issue. Still a light clicking, (appears even when slip ring is taken off) particulary when i turn the wheel slightly to the right. Forums only mention slipring and guibo. Any tips aside from swapping the entire column? Thanks again.
@50sKid8 жыл бұрын
What do you mean slip ring? I've never heard of a part with that name. Is the clicking inside the car or outside in the engine bay closer to the steering rack? Does it click only when you are moving forward/back?

+50sKid that's where I find parts for my car. BEWARE. I've purchased a fan belt off eBay. Check for quality. The fan belt I bought said BMW on the belt it's self, but it felt plastic like and very light. I had it on my car for one month till it shredded to pieces that it took out my transmission hose that ran from the radiator to tran. Those parts I will buy at Autozone. They text to have better quality parts. eBay has been there for me. It was just that one part. My next project is my Suspensions,, coilovers that I will buy on eBay. J2

The brake master cylinder from autozone that I installed in a recent video is getting replaced by an oem unit because it keeps leaking. So, your mileage always varies with the aftermarket. That's why I want people to share their experiences with aftermarket brands. Thanks!

Hey man I got myself a steering guibo, and I'm just wondering after I do this am I going to need an alignment ?
@50sKid8 жыл бұрын
+SpartanA31xx Nah--the worst that would happen is your steering wheel would be "crooked" when traveling straight forward if you rotate the wheel or the rack once you have the steering shaft out of the giubo.
@SpartanA31xx8 жыл бұрын
+50sKid okay thanks, so I should just keep the steering shaft metal and still as possible and make sure not to rotate it
@50sKid8 жыл бұрын
SpartanA31xx You will have to put your key in the ignition and unlock the steering wheel to do the job, and you will have to rotate everything in order to orient the bolts facing downward so you can get them out. Important thing is, once you take the giubo off, just put the new one back on without rotating the steering wheel. You would have to rotate it 180 or 360 degrees to really screw it up, as the giubo is keyed. This is all in the video.
@SpartanA31xx8 жыл бұрын

02:35 "Has anybody figured our what that horrible sound is when you have the ignition on? With the car not on by the way. I really wish I knew what that was, so I can take a baseball bat to it." - Ask JFOJ on E46Fanatics, he will probably approve of your baseball bat idea, as your have a 2002 E46 electric fuel pump (under the rear seat) should have failed by now at beyond 166K... These can soft fail and can be another cause of your running lean on both banks codes too. Did you get a DSC error from your steering angle sensor complaining about an implausible angle after moving the plastic guide so much? I did mine on a four poster ramp with all wheels on the ground and still ended up 30-40 deg out! I think it has to line up precisely with an alignment notch on the rack itself and mine moved whilst cleaning and then greasing the splines.

On the driver's side. Your steering wheel is bolted onto a shaft, right? When you turn it, you are turning this shaft clockwise and counterclockwise. You can see this shaft if you look underneath the dash where your pedals are. So follow that shaft where it goes through the firewall, then go look under the car and you will see the steering rack and you'll see where the shaft connects to the steering rack and boom, you have found the part.

Your final shot still seems to have lot of play. Heck, next time you have that Odyssey in for something, check its steering. I have sneaking suspicion that your will find that steering to be tighter than your Bimmer. Immediately after watching your video, I drove our 99 Odyssey and noticed "non-rubbery" steering.
