Are you a brand new BMW E46 owner? Did you just buy an E46 for the first time or are you thinking about it? This the video you need to watch! In this video I will tell you everything you need to do to get your E46 fixed up and make sure it's reliable for many years to come.
In this video I will tell you about all the pattern failures associated with the E46 chassis and the M52TU and M54 engines.
Read about bmw approved long life oils here:
www.bmwgm5.com/e46_oil.htm
The part number for the green o-ring you need to replace on the coolant temperature sensor in the lower coolant hose is: 13621743299 (it's the same as the intake air temp sensor o-ring). You can buy it here: amzn.to/2BYgdya
Silicone 3.5mm ID vacuum hose: amzn.to/2BuI4oG
Kendall GT-1 5w30 Full Synthetic: amzn.to/2BvwCte
Mann Oil Filter: amzn.to/2BWswuZ
Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle: amzn.to/2znxJt2
You need 2 gallons to refill the ZF 5HP19 transmission
Transmission Filter & Gasket kit: amzn.to/2BtnEN3
Ravenol MTF-2 oil (affordable, you need 2 liters for ZF 5-speed manual transmission): amzn.to/2l4RuQX

To everyone regretting their purchase of an E46/M54 after watching this video... these are great cars and the maintenance outlined here isn't so bad. You've found this channel already so consider yourself lucky, 50sKid will hold your hand, kicking and screaming through the big scary Vanos repair, remind you about potential catastrophic failures and you just have to follow instruction. If that's too much work for you there's a used Honda with 250k miles and 12 cupholders calling your name.

Couldn’t had said this any better imagine not having this e46 genius (50sKid) not telling you everything and you having to figure out the problems on your own literally every maintenance job I did to my e46 was discussed in the video these cars are top tier and not for everybody especially those who are not willing to spend money on them people beat on BMWs and expect them to last but it’s all fun and games until your car ends up on a tow truck.

Hey John et al... The50'sKid is AWESOME, and is extremely informative. Every car has it's drawbacks, and quite frankly I believe that the E46 is one of the best BMW's ever built. Like everything, it's how it's been taken care of, both daily driving and basic interval maintenance. Also, how many miles you pound on a car will be a big factor. I bought my 2002 BMW 330ci New, as a second "fun car"... not a daily driver. Other than one battery and tires every 35K I didn't have to do anything to my BMW for 13 years! At the ripe age of 13, and 110K miles, I replaced the valve cover gasket that had begun to leak. While I was at it (nothing had broken) as a preventative move I replaced the water pump, thermostat, belts, and tensioners. That's it!! I love my BMW... they are relatively easy to work on (you can actually reach everything under the hood.. try doing that on most cars!) and if you can learn (watch The50'sKid!) to take care of the basics yourself they are a great car to own! My BMW is now 17, and going strong! I'm going to replace all the "rubber" under the hood (vacuum related parts) soon as a preventative move, but at 17 years old how can I complain! Enjoy and embrace your E46! Finally, My many THANKS to The 50's Kid... your vids are the best! Keep them coming!!

At 100k miles my water pump started leaking like crazy. I decided to do the following preventative maintenance at that time: -water pump, thermostat, radiator, coolant tank, all coolant hoses, temp sensor, fan clutch -main belt, a/c belt, main tensioner and pulley, water pump pulley -valve cover gasket, vanos seals, vanos anti-rattle bushings, spark plugs -ccv valve and tubes, vacuum hoses, upper and lower intake boots, disa valve seal and pin fix All super easy to do and cost about $1000 plus my time. Still running strong at 150k miles! I love this car

Great video. I bought a 2005 320i last year as a second car to replace my winter beater. It was my first Beemer so I was waiting for the sky to fall, as some would say, with all the horror stories of expensive repairs these cars require. At this point, I should mention that we operate an auto repair shop, and work on most makes. We chose to address almost every point you've indicated in this video. Easy to work on, and parts can be found at many places besides the dealer. Another thing about the E46 cars, they're probably the last models that you can fix most issues by yourself.

The best commentary I've come across among the scores of BMW how-to videos I have Googled. Your delivery is excellent and as well the camera work is top quality - in focus and pointed at just the right angles to frame exactly what you are describing. As a 2000 E46 330i, 140,000km sedan owner/maintainer for 8 years I have experienced many of your pattern failures. Have changed my HVAC resistor but unlike your LHD version, mine's an Australian right-hooker so had to work around the steering wheel side to get at it. Not the easiest job I've done on it and hope not to have to do it again. Keep up the great work.

Great car to drive, easy to work on if you familiarize yourself with each individual component and how they play their part in the overall engine bay. Lots of instructional resources available online to learn from. The one question that BMW will refuse to answer for all time, and I know it's from their finance dept not so much the engineering dept, is why the HELL do they keep using plastic on a lot of their critical components. Thermostat housing, water pump propeller, valve covers, pulleys, radiator necks and frame, expansion bottle, timing chain guides, etc...really!!!??? Plastic, plastic, plastic everywhere...thermal stress, heat cycling....what's that!?

After checking everything else, the ffuel pressure only rose 1 or 2 lbs on power on. Hmmm. Removed the fuel pump to find the outlet hose had slipped off of the stub on the housing. Re-attached and put a clamp on it. Original did not have a clamp. Live and learn. it is a happy car now. Thanks for your great videos, I am slowly chewing my way through all of them.

Great video as always. Other trouble points - frequently damaged vapor barriers (often by rushed techs fixing the window regulators which as mentioned often go out); when torn or not sealed properly, these will allow water intrusion into the cabin carpet. Corroded bulb receptacles that cause replacement bulbs to flicker and / or burn out rapidly. The tensioner and pulleys on the belts also seem to go out frequently with annoying squealing until they’re replaced.

I have a 2000 323CI manual as my daily driver. Kudos to taking the time to make and post your videos. I would add one thing to a power steering flush. Replace the reservoir or clean the screen at the bottom. They are cheap. A clogged screen probably means that your hoses are in bad shape. The lower hose leak is common. It's also an easy job. Thanks again.

Oil level sensor is also a common failure on them. The yellow oil warning light will cycle on and off when starting the car and eventually stay off. But it will repeat every time car is started Also, the vanos oil line from cylinder head to oil filter housing is also a common leaking component

I recommend FCP Euro for your BMW parts. They offer a lifetime warranty on everything they sell. ECS Tuning can also be a decent option. Personally I avoid Amazon for parts. Also for your PCV kit I recommend getting the cold weather kit even if you don’t live in a typically cold area as the hoses and valve have insulation on them which helps protect them from degradation and condensation.

On the engine, i also frequently see the evap purge valves go bad on the m54 (also in the early z4), this is in front of the the ccv and up a bit, the cheaper ebay ones work fine. On the back end, diff bush and rtab bushes are almost always shot (both the outer rear bushes should also need doing at this point). I would also replace the fuel filter, its such a simple job, but everyone ive done has never been changed and was full of crud. Finally the heater final stage resistor is also fairly common to go bad, again the ebay ones appear to work fine as a cheaper replacement.

50sKid Doh thought of another one i discovered shortly after, the gas cap, well the gas cap oring, mine went bad, and i suspect this is what kills the evap purge valve. Due to a fault code, i had to replaced mine, but occasionally she would still throw a fault code, if i remember diffident code to the evap code, swapped on a gas cap from a scrap mini and fault code never came back. I did read on the forums the gas cap oring is also a frequent issue, but as i said i think if its left uncheck it then takes the evap purge valve out if not fixed.

I just picked up a 210,000 mile 2003 M3 6 speed standard for 3,500 bucks and this is the exact info I was looking for the car drives and motor feels wonderful, I found an Oil leak so far might be Valve cover, and Lets just say the car is going to be sitting until I can get around to changing and doing all these things you suggested. the only other issue is that the park brake does not work well I think the Linkage needs adjusting and the other issue I am having is that when im driving the car sometimes beeps from the dash and sometimes the right turn signal indicator on the dash will flash red, sometimes left, sometimes both. I'm in North Dakota and its really cold here right now and I have read about the the beeper going off to indicated freezing temps. From my experience, every vehicle you buy used, needs this level of preventative maintenance. No matter the make or model, people abuse their cars, they don't follow the rules, so it's a wise decision to commit $1500.00 to servicing a used vehicle when you buy it. Yes you end up sinking in a bunch of money, but it'll still cost you less than purchasing a new vehicle.
