Martijn, you have helped me through the most difficult period in my life. My husband of 32 years died October 16 after a thankfully brief battle with cancer. I found myself plugged into my laptop, mindlessly flipping through material that confirmed the misery of life. Then I remembered my sister had said how much she enjoyed your videos. So every morning, as I tried to force myself to eat something, I watched one video. It felt like a meditation, like going to mass. Watching you, I became more comfortable in my aloneness, to find enough purpose and resolve to see me to the next morning. As I went through my day, I could see you take on a task with determination while taking time to appreciate everything around you. And so I plodded on. At the end of 50 videos, I’m in a much better place. Thank you so much.

I'm so sorry for your loss Janet, but it's good to know Martijn and his wonderfully calm attitude and steady resilience is giving you strength. He is helping a lot of people cope through difficult times I feel. He certainly restores a balance in me and I'm getting so much pleasure from watching him create his new home. My heart dropped when he talked of the 'last' video, he has a place in my life now, though I'll never ever meet him. The end will come, of course it will, but I can keep coming back and re-view Martijns project whenever I want to, and he may develop his place a bit more, make a video, share it, and so it may go on. And if not, I will always be grateful for the time he HAS shared. Thank you Martijn. I hope you've had a wonderful holiday with your family. Happy new year. And to all of Martijns followers.

Haven’t gotten to that part yet, but it won’t end for a few years if he’s going to film the renovation of the smaller cabin as well as the yard, greenhouse, garden etc. The bigger house will take a year still, at least 1 year for the smaller one and the yard stuff etc, so I would see this going to the end of 2024 or summer of 2025, at the very minimum. If he hasn’t changed his original plans that is.

What a strange feeling it was to hear you talk about the last video. I know it will be some time yet before that happens but it felt a little sad to think of it. The internet creates these peculiar connections between people, total strangers scattered all over the world. I will miss this particular kind of serenity that your videos offer. However, no need to fret about that now. I will just enjoy it while it lasts. Thanks for sharing your answers and your journey.

Selfishly I am so glad you are putting so much handmade and personal effort into each piece of the project because it means we get to spend more time enjoying your videos. But at the same time the work that you have done on the gutters alone makes the cabin so unique and special that its worth it. Can't wait to see your creative ideas for the inside and then for the second cabin! Bravo to you and I look worward to another year of incredible cinimatography and the best sound mixing of any youtube channel. See you next week thanks for filming!

I really appreciate your nuanced and extremely fluid editing. Your project is a gift to your viewers. It takes me back 25 years ago when I migrated from a metropolitan life to rural mountain life, to my old family cabin in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California. I completed an unfinished family project, bringing new life to it not only by making it a comfortable space, but by starting my own family there. I am no longer there, but the journey I undertook, the memories I created, along with the skills I developed, are indelible marks in my soul. Thank you, Martijn, and Happy New Year to you!

My daughter works in Nevada City and lives in Grass Valley ...approximately where was/is your cabin? I also understand why my daughter left the craziness of LA and feels her soul has had a respite in the Sierra Nevadas. There have been so many fires in recent years ...and now rain, rain, rain ...& snow. Still, she loves skiing, hiking and found a whole new career in the Hotel business. As a graphic artist and dancer who also was in many dance/music videos, I was afraid she would bore with the slower pace. But she grew up in Montessori and Waldorf schooling which I think steadied her for the most important things/values in life. I think that is why I am drawn to Martijn's videos as well. Commitment, stick-to-it-ness, steady progress and the pause in earnest work to look up and see the beauty all-around and breathe in deeply. I need that respite in my life, and get it through prayer, meditation, and hiking in the woods. But as I get older, and my chronic Lyme flares up, my joints and ligaments and bones protest. Yet, I press on. Martijn's videos really help me find that center-point of peace. I hope he finds a creative way to still connect to this little community of his ...maybe even publish a book perhaps.

When he has completed his work with all the things he wants around him, I think he will feel satisfied and a little sad for the end of an adventure. Transporting stones, carving gutters, filming, editing and more require a lot of work that can't be resume in a weekly video. We stay in our homes devouring all of without having done any effort to obtain it. Be quiet and patient. Everything requires its time. Let's figure how it will be in the end. A priceless gift Thank you Martijn.

Hey Martijn, I'm pretty sure that what you called a dog house is a "ghiacciaia": before electricity and refrigerators people on the Alps used to pack small rooms with snow in the winter, being in a dark room the snow would melt very slowly and they could have a cold space to store food throughout most of the year
@plainsimple442

In New England, USA ice would be cut, in the winter, and stacked in ice houses with sawdust packed around the ice to insulate it. I remember in the summer when peddlers came by selling big pieces of ice to put in our ice boxes. This was a big business, and even farmers did the same for their families.

@@plainsimple442 Yes! I inherited an icebox from my family. It was an insulated tin box and dad put some ice cubes at the bottom and the milk man delivered the milk in glass bottles with the cream at the top that my mom prized for her coffee. Dad said they had a much bigger ice box when he was growing up right before they got electricity & the "Iceman" delivered ice two or three times per week. That was when they still sold vegetables and meat in the neighborhoods by peddlers in their horse-drawn wagons!

Thank you for your video. I am born in Zwitserland. With a Spanish mother, a Danish/German father, born in Bremen. My father emigrated to Zwitserland. My mother went from Spain to Zwitserland as a worker in a cookie factory when she was 19/20 years old. Later when i was 3 years old my father bought a truck and all of us went for Turkey, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Jordania, Saudi- Arabia. Well...why do i say all this? Life is for everyone different, but for me, i just realize, living im Belgium for decades it seems now, i just dream of the rough nature, simplicity of living in the truck and the simplicity of living i saw of the people in this countries nack then...I crave the simplicity, nature, solitude, away from 'modern life' and the hectic, noise, a lifestyle pressure i do not feel comfortable with. I miss 'belonging' where you feel your life is worth every minute you breath. I miss a self sufficient life, with nature and chickens, a goat or 2, dogs, cat and wild animals who come by now and then. Sitting and eating a simple meal, made in a simple cosy kitchen as the place to be. Learning how to make medicinal cures from the plants, trees you find. Even bee keeping would be so interresting. Your video awakens the feeling of 'belonging'. I dream for you, to have a life worth living, in peace with yourself, with enough food to survive and staying strong. A life where you feel at the end of life, that was worth your sweat, tears and joy. Kind regards from Belgium.

I actually felt a little sad when you spoke about the last video, but i suspect the end of one project means, okay what next? Your editing, camera work and music are just spot on. We moved from the city to the countryside and renovated an old stone house about 27 yrs ago. We did most of the work ourselves whilst still working busy careers. It was one of the best experiences of my life, we brought the house back to life and did the same for ourselves...we changed how we lived. The house is done but it’s never finished there are always things to do...logs to split, roof repairs, frozen pipes, grass to cut, stock fencing to fix and stone walls to rebuild...it all happened by accident really but we found ourselves living the simple life and discovered that by having less things we actually have more if that makes sense. When you finish your house you will find you have created a way of life...that flows on...

It's so poignant to state, "The goal is today." "The goal is to live in the moment." That is what I am learning and experiencing in my life, and as I read authors like Eckhart Tolle and David Hawkins. And I believe wholeheartedly as it occurs to me now, that this I why I am a new viewer to your stories and life.

Now that I know you filmed this before you left for the winter holiday break, I’m wondering if you have already noticed (maybe you’re in the Netherlands now?) the return of the light. Thanks for sharing more of the plans for the cabins and grounds….what pleasant things to dream and then bring into fruition.

If it was not for your inspirational vids I would not of done what I have done. Me and my partner just bought a cabin house near to you we think. Its near Paesana. Its more finished than your project but it still requires some work. This year we plan to enjoy it as we don't live in Italy yet. But it was just by chance I came across your 3rd or 4th vid in this series that confirmed it was a calling for us to live in the mountains. It was the way you make the dream a reality was the comforting reassurance that was the final push I needed. Thank you. Hope our paths cross in the mountains! Happy and a very prosperous new year to you!

I’ve watched a few of your videos back at the beginning of 2022 .. then life took over. Your stone cabins are magnificent btw. I just watched your segment with [edit] Kirsten Dirksen from a year ago and suddenly I realised you’re in the north-facing slope! 😮 I immediately jumped to your channel and saw your latest vid was a Q&A and sure enough, here you are talking about the north and south comparisons. We’re seriously considering land on the north facing side of a valley in Transylvania and everyone tells us not to do it … but what you say makes so much sense. Sure it doesn’t get as much sun but what if your favourite vegetable isn’t bell peppers and tomatoes, but broccoli and mushrooms?! Then it makes sense! I moved to the northern hemisphere especially to get away from the violent Aussie sun 😂 so for me it would be kind of perfect. Thank you. This has been super helpful! 😊👍🏻

Happy New Year Martijn. A pleasant surprise to see your post tonight. Great video as usual. When you build your masonry stove, making a water pipe baffle within it could easily fill your piping under your floor for heating. Our cast iron stove had a water pipe baffle which provided bathroom,2, and the kitchen with all we needed . We fed the water into our electric water heater which almost never came on. Even in summer we could light little more than a twig fire to provide hot wzter.

Martijn, wishing you a wonderful 2023 and always looking forward to your videos. I know that you get a lot of suggestions and I offer one based on our home. We build a log cabin and our fireplace in in the center. It is constructed of stone from our property. The heat from the chimney structure radiates for a long time even though it is just warm. I would keep the chimney inside as high as possible. Just a thought.

This series is incredibly inspiring and relaxing, so I'm glad I discovered it! I started with the one year recap and then followed avidly everything after that :D Keep on going! if I may, I'd like to help with some of the decisions: as an architect, I agree on having a masonry stove and floor heating, but you'll have to insulate at least UNDERNEATH the floor, or the warmth will be negated and dispersed in all directions. Even a floating floor can be enough. Also, I'd suggest at least a light plaster layer on the inside walls, to uniform the surface and give you more control on the temperature: the plaster will fill (or at least regularize) the voids and you will reduce the possible thermal bridges. That'll give you more performance with less material and fuel :D Also, the white surface will brighten up the inside with less need for light, due to the reflection. It will cover the stones, tho, and make it less beautiful :D Don't want to teach you anything, you're doing great by yourself, just a few thoughts if you ever need them!

Can’t really imagine these vlogs coming to an end - your story is not simply about renovating these buildings but soo much more; sharing your thoughts, and the ever changing landscape of course. Then as the weeks go by i envisage future vlogs, post cabin refurbishing, discussions with the various people attracted to visit and stay, the gardening projects, your wild animal visitors, neighbours. You may well find your story leads to more cabins being reclaimed on your side of the mountain. Huge amounts of material 👍

Martijn, you can heat that cabin easy with wood stove. Big stone walls are big thermal mass. I have just come back into city. I have been in mine stone house high in mountain. First 2 days walls are very cold. While you breathing ice form on walls 🙂After 2 days walls will get warm. This thermal mass will also lower temperature during summer. Outside chimney is minus, it is better to have it inside as much as possible.

Hi Martijn, I think you should do some research about insulating the cabin. As soon as you start heating the cabin, you‘ll have the dew point in your walls. Water will be freezing inside your walls and damage them. There are some very nice natural material options out there, which are the option to go to for old buildings like this. Wood fiber insulation, combined with clay leaves the walls open to „breathe“ whilst keeping the dew point in the insulation which the gives the water back inside the room. Anyway, thank you for your inspiring content! Happy 2023
