I know this isn't an option for everyone, and it isn't a small lifestyle change but... I don't have a car. And by the time you add up the cost of: the car, gas, repairs, insurance I save an enormous amount of money by doing so. I think a lot of people would benefit by going car free because it frees up so much money for other things. I've lived car free in small towns, big cities, and medium cities, and found ways to make it work in all of them.

I've lived so frugal for so long....lol...I'm pretty sure my friends think I'm weird🤣 Frugality for me started out of absolute necessity & now it's just plain fun. This year I was given 2 FREE ... huge oak trees that fell in a storm. My son & I cut and split them. Free firewood for the winter. Estimated savings $1000.00 I call it sweat equity 😊 And yes my friends thought I was super weird in the heat of July cutting trees up on my days off work. Lol. That's okay..I laugh all the way to the bank..

Thank you so to the Wares and the viewers who share ideas for saving money in the 🏠 budget! Your idea Hope of not eating out reminds me to pack a picnic lunch, or even buy some sandwich ingredients when I'm out during the day and find a bench make myself a sandwich or a wrap, eat and drink plenty to give strength and hope for the homeward journey. I ride the bus in Southern California, and doing errands involves a lot of walking. So does going to doctors appointments, getting to church, and community group. I'm 73 and a widow. Learning to save money by packing water, tea, food, and snacks helps me to get in some nutrients while on the road, and rescues the budget from eating out expenses!

Greetings from Co. Kerry in Ireland. I have a frugal tip that I'd like to share....if you have a log burner, place orange (any citrus fruit) peelings on the top of the stove. Not only does it give off a gorgeous aroma but the dried peelings act as a brilliant fire lighter. You can add it to the 'fluff' from the tumble dryer too to give an extra boost. We never have to buy firelighters ...it's only a small saving but good for the planet too (no chemicals) and our hens appreciate the good quality ash to dust bathe in! Nx

Learn to sew! Many people give away perfectly good sewing machines. I was in need of a pair of black slacks, yikes 35$ new ! No way . I went to my local thrift store , all they had were kinda of out dated wide leg styles. I purchased 3 pair for 5$ , and just took in the legs ! It took less than 15 minutes. Because I’m very short I’ve always had to alter my clothing , so I might as well do that to thrift items. Not paying full price and then doing the work .

I second this! I've got some very odd proportions so store-bought clothes never quite fit right and end up wearing out in strange places. At the moment I'm making warm winter things (UK energy prices mean Jan/Feb will be rough) but they'll actually fit me and last more than one winter. Knitting and crochet are a great help there too!

I started writing down when I impulse bought things and how I was feeling at the time really gave me insight into my spending:) also if you are getting takeaway try to get less expensive takeaway eg $15 for gluten free pizza instead of $60 for gourmet Indian takeaway. Find joy in small things - a really good cup of tea or coffee, the seeds I planted in pots inside my windowsill starting to sprout or a friendly boop and pat from a dog you meet on the street! You can be happy with less if you focus on what you have rather than what you want.

For bulk cooking, since I'm already cooking, I'll double or triple a recipe at a time, and I'll have a base meal for that night and then 1-2 meals for future weeks. That way, I get the benefit of bulk cooking without the time hassle. Do that every night for a week, and boom, the next 2 weeks are already done.

I have not listened to all 52 yet... But one major cost savings I found is to put a timer on your Water Heater. It dose not need to be running overnight. Or while you are at work. We already do most of the things on this list. Cell phones? We don't have one, just a landline. The money we saved on a cell phone has instead bought us a ham radio and most of our solar equipment. Our internet is our main expense that we could ditch, but we're gamers ~ and we prefer that to eating out, take out, movies, etc. I also cook from scratch and instead of making bulk meals or spending entire days cooking I just double recipes and freeze the extra for us along with my mom-in-love. Casseroles, soups, sides, bread, etc. all get put in the freezer as they are cooked which ends up with me only cooking 12 days or so each month unless there is a holiday. I make English muffins and biscuits once each month, along with our own sausage patties, meatless burgers, spice mixes, and pantry mixes. The time I do spend most on is canning and dehydrating, which further lessens daily cooking not to mention shopping. I will buy in bulk from a local farmer if my own garden fails on something, but my grocery shopping is mostly for things like coffee, a few spices I can't buy, and canning/baking supplies. We purchase grass fed beef and pork from a local farm, raise our own chickens, ducks, and rabbits, have a garden, etc. Being retired helps a lot as far as time, but we did most of the same things when we were both still working and had children at home. Lots of truly good tips and ideas for people to cut back here and there ~ and it all adds up!

Turning down the temperature on the thermostat will allow the growth of legionella. At least once a week, the water needs to reach 140 degrees. If you have an elective water heater, you can time it to come on once or twice a day for showers and dishwashing. When it’s time to replace the water heater, consider an electric unit and cancel the gas to the house to avoid monthly fees. In the case of my gas company, the service must be discontinued for a minimum of six months to avoid the fees.

Another tip is not to let my hubby shop for groceries bring back a lot of stuff that I dont use. For example he bought black beans noodles. Often the only difference between budget, supermarket and brand is the extra salt/sugar/fat to give them more taste, or purely aesthetic (eg. consistent size throughout a can of beans). People say they don't have enough time but in reality while you wait for a takeaway you can easily make a quick meal. Make 6 pizza bases and freezer them. You can make a big batch of bolognaise sauce and you can make it into lasagne, cottage pie, spaghetti bolognaise. Make chicken and white sauce and you can use it for chicken and rice, chicken and mushroom pie and chicken chicken supreme. You can make a lot of pie crusts and freeze them and take them out in the morning put them in the fridge before you start the day or go to work and instead of making just one meal double the recipe and freeze the other. Making changes like this has enabled me to save so much money.

YES you can still save. I picked up a package of 15 boneless Pork Chops at Walmart reduced to $5.78. That will give me many of delicious meals for a very low price. Also, bags of stirfry veggies already cut up ( I have trigger finger both hands ) and dressing plus topping reduced to $2.99.

I have cut down my spending considerably but I had heard about a “no spend January “ and it was a complete waste of time. All I ended up doing was saving my spending for the first week of February. We don’t usually go out to eat, I rarely go to Starbucks anymore but the dogs needed to go to the vet and needed food and I needed to restock my pantry and freezer. It was just dumb.

Many things can still fit the budget on a " no spend " month. Veternary bills, freezer stock pile, and a good homemade cup of coffee in a thermos, can all be a part of a "no spend" month. Even a trip to Starbucks and one of their smaller drinks might fit the bill if you're on foot and traveling by bus, and need to use their public restroom! It is doable! It can cut down your spending a lot!

The no spending is typically on the frivolous things. If you are already frugal it may not be as much of a benefit for you. For us eating out is about the only thing we spend discretionary money on. We do get a personal allowance each month. To say having a no spend month is stupid is an insensitive statement.

Consider freezing your credit with the credit reporting company. We did that and it prevents anyone from opening up a credit card or loan in our name. You can unlock it easily online for your own needs and relock it after the inquiry is done, minutes later.

For the bulk cook I do extra when I cook a normal meal and freeze some of it for later. I take those to lunch for work.
