What a great interview. Chi Leyna’s words are inspiring. Working in 2 male dominated fields (engineering, medicine) women, especially women are expected not to have a voice. So when we do speak up, we are viewed as not a team player or a disgruntled employee. So good to hear confirmation that it’s ok to stand up for ourselves. Also Anh Kenneth, I think we stumbled on an interesting topic. Our parents who came over as refugees identified themselves as more Vietnamese and American second. Our children who are born here, identified themselves as American first and Vietnamese second (or third because our kids are half Vietnamese). Us Viet kieu Americans who are in the age group 40-50 something year olds are squeezed in the middle who can’t really identified if we are more Vietnamese or more American. For me, at least, I may speak better in English, because I don’t know all the vocabulary. Even vocabulary is difficult to learn because there are words in Bác my, Nām my, Chung my, etc. But if you ask me, I think more in Vietnamese. I think Vietnamese, I feel more Vietnamese, I express myself better in Vietnamese. I think that’s why I love this channel, because it’s for our age group 40-50 year olds that we struggle to pass down our Vietnamese culture to our kids, but don’t have a full grasp of it ourselves. We do risk the danger of losing our culture history of the refugees of our parents. We will always have the Vietnamese culture. Just go back to VN, but it is the refugee influence that we are threaten to lose.
