Okay you're clearly out of the loop on this joke. Rango was shot entirely in live-action first, and the animation was then done with that live-action footage used as direct reference. You can literally find the live-action footage online by looking it up if you don't believe me. So, Rango genuinely would have outtakes.

As a 7 year old Guatemalan boy, I honestly had no clue I'd been watching the Rango'd version of the Tim and Eric Million Dollar Movie for YEARS. I would usually skip past the parts with the animated chameleon, but sometimes I'd skip past the tim and eric stuff and just watch that swanky little lizard and his outtakes. They just blended so seamlessly most of the time that I had no clue they were separate projects.

I made a short movie for film class in college. It was somewhat controversial so the studios came in and Rango'd my film as well. It can't be marketing at this point, this was 2 years ago. The impunity with which they do this is unacceptable. It seems there's no rhyme or reason to when or whom the studios Rango. It happened to my little brother's TikTok the other day. It's the first real global pandemic in decades.
