With IMS you have to grind finer by default. Its the way of how the IMS is designed compared to stock breville basket.

If you pull the shot in manual mode, you can extend pre infusion to 8-10 seconds which helps with the channelling with high pressure machine like the BBE.
@trevorkurzhal3 жыл бұрын
I've timed the pre-infusion quite a few times with more than one BBE, and it seems to consistently put out 54g water in about 9.3-9.5 seconds (3:1, water:coffee for 18.0g dose). Spot on observation, James. But one needs to memorize the sound the BBE makes when its water flow actually starts. It's like... the third sound the machine makes? Is that your experience at all?
@Zissou42 Жыл бұрын
@@trevorkurzhal What does this comment even mean? The flow rate empty is irrelevant to that when loaded, and if you are truly getting 54g out at 9.5s your grind is way too coarse and/or your beans are way too dry. FYI, if you consider your machine "high pressure," you can open it up and adjust the Overpressure Valve (OPV) downwards.
@trevorkurzhal Жыл бұрын
@Zissou42 I'm only referring to water flow rate out of the group, which is mainly applicable for the pre-infusion stage. I'm not referring to running a 54g shot in 9 seconds haha

better to pull the completely "preinfusion" shot on these breville machines with older thermoblock, it conveniently hits 9 bar instead of its 12-14bar capabilities. i had significantly reduced channelling and a much more even extraction once i started doing PI only shots.

Hi Hoon. I missed this live, but watched it later. I have been using an IMS basket for a while now. Can you help me understand how the basket affects channeling? It seems that channeling depends on grind and puck preparation. I am thinking that channeling occurs or doesn't regardless of basket and portafilter (IMS, Breville, spouted, bottomless, ...). I use an IMS basket because it does not clog. My Breville basket easily clogged and was hard to clean out. I hold up the basket and look through it towards a light. My Breville basked would clog and just rinsing would not unclog. I had to use compressed air or a pin to clean out the holes. There were times when half the holes were clogged, which I think affects the puck pressure, which I guess could affect channeling. I find the IMS basket is really hard to clog. But with a clean basket, I think channeling is controlled by puck. What I missing something? Thanks!
@freezingsunbreaka3 жыл бұрын
@bobh, I never have clogging with my regular baskets... Do you regularly clean and backflush? What grinder are you using?
@kyleb20442 жыл бұрын
The idea is ims puts more care in creating all the little holes, create more uniform and circular perforations. cheaper baskets may have slight issues between the holes creating more or less flow restriction from hole to hole and could create channels more easily. that's the idea anyway, I'd guess most modern baskets are built better then in the past, but ims does more QC to make sure.

The shots honestly looked pretty similar, but I like the idea of a triple basket for darker roasts.

I got the exact same basket and the IMS shower screen for my BBE a week ago. I also happen to have a Niche Grinder. It is a lot of adjustment because the basket is way larger than the Breville stock one. If I had known that the basket was larger than 18g (was advertised as 18g) and the other one as 14g (which in fact is as big as the Breville one), I would have bought the smaller one. Nonetheless, I was able to pull a few great shots on my bottomless portafilter. The shot is prettier due to the larger base. The extraction is better and the texture is syrupy. I had to make 20g+ shots instead of my usual 18g shot. For the shower screen, I cannot really say if there is a significant difference with the Breville one. Head to head, the water distribution seems more evenly, but there is still a dominant water jet due to the shower head configuration. Still, for a 60$ investment, it is nice to experiment. If the 14g ever is available again, I will surely purchase it.

@felix-antoinegarneau-picar18793 жыл бұрын
@@MXG000 I did not try them head on for the same coffee. The look on the puck is more evenly. I don't think it is significant on extraction and taste, but I did not try it. What has been on my mind for a while is .. what's more important *weight or volume?* Example 18g of some coffee per volume is 20g to another. My observations have also been volume plays a huge role in taste .. especially for those that don't tamp per se but instead use a distributor with a fixed depth tamper. Meaning, I've had about as good of luck with taste overfilling the basket and using my finger to reduce volume / level and then to distribute / fixed tamp. The problem in our household is we use up to six different beans .. it makes conventional "dialing in" nearly impossible. Volume has seemed to be pretty universal.
@freezingsunbreaka3 жыл бұрын
As you get to know your machine, you'll find eyeballing to be supreme :). Colour of your stream, speeding up near the end, consistency, channeling, etc. Don't worry about getting past the point of needing to objectively measure mass or volume if you're happy with your shots :).
@DJaquithFL3 жыл бұрын
@@freezingsunbreaka .. The notion of e.g. 21g at "X" Grind setting for 30 seconds yielding a 2:1 "perfection" simply isn't reality. Everybody has their technique to reduce channeling, for myself the latest which seems to be the most consistent is to use a dosing ring and while grinds are dropping to move the portafilter in a circular motion and never tap any side and to level using the ring and tap only the bottom a couple or few times, here's my distributor tool and finally my calibrated tamper. Never did I think I'd have to baby coffee so much. Even then repeating everything identically I can sometimes have a variance from 2:1 to 3:1 and about 1 out of 5 with a small channeling spray. This damn coffee machine is giving me OCD.
@freezingsunbreaka3 жыл бұрын
@@DJaquithFL are you using the built in grinder? Or have you upgraded it? I'm using the Baratza Sette 270. But even still, my shots are not great looking with channels. I love the CREMA Coffee Products dosing funnel and combo distributor/tamper. Helps. :). I do a similar procedure to you. But now I'm thinking about getting the Bezzera Strega or Profitec Pro 800... Did you had to adjust coffee amount to fill basket comfortably?
@osammah3 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Just a guess. Maybe the IMS 20g shot had less channeling because it had less pressure than the 21g shot? (especially given that the Express has high bar pressure). That's the only logical explanation I can think of. Otherwise maybe the puck prep was worse on the 21g shot. Great stream as always, btw!
@MultiBamb00cha2 жыл бұрын
Late response, but w/e 😀. Dose changes the way espresso pulls by itself too. Diameter of your puck doesn't change (is set by the 54mm portafilter in this case), so with more coffee, the puck will end up thicker, making it comparatively harder for water to get through. Any additional resistance presents a chance for the water to find a path of lesser resistance, aka a channel. Higher doses are just harder to evenly extract. Plus a bit more headspace in the portafilter, while making cleanup worse due to backsuction after the pump is turned off after the shot, allows for more expansion during preinfusion, allowing for potential shutting of possible channel spots by just the coffee expanding filling up that empty space as it needs to
