Great tutorial! I drill some additional smaller holes about 1 foot from the ground to provide some air when the bottom holes get covered with ash.

Thanks for the video. Gave me some good ideas. I like the anchors and the way you rigged the lid with the gap. I made a similar handle just big enough to stick a broom handle or end of a rake through it to pop it off. Thinking about putting a hinge on it so I can just flip it open and shut. Well done video, nicely laid out and easy to follow. Professional. Kind of has a This Old House feel. Looked like you were doing some of the work with one hand and holding the camera with the other. I don't know how you kept it steady the whole time, but that's pretty damn impressive. I can barely record a straight video sitting down using both hands. Haha. Thanks again.

Thanks for viewing and for the kind words. Tell the truth, I rarely use the lid except to keep the rain out. Just burns better with it off unless I'm supposed to be away while doing a burn, then I'd use it for spark arresting. Hinge would be nice. Thanks for the recognition of the camera work. The shots from over the top of the barrel, I did with a GoPro attached to a headstrap. Other shots were on a tripod and my wife shot one of the scenes where I was using the grinder. I'm a believer in tripod use and steady shots for good people like yourself. Thanks for the reference to This Old House.

Have you tried to use a lever locking lid on a steel barrel after removing the old lid? Does it work?

No I haven’t tried that.

2:32 Before you cut, drill, or weld an old drum, make damn sure the old contents were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. I was just reading about a guy in Pennsylvania who got killed by a burn barrel last week. There was another incident in Iowa that killed a man who was welding on top of a barrel, using it as a workbench. Filling the drum with water before cutting into it can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.

The video states that I knew what was in the drum, knew the flash point, filled it with water first and moved the cutter often reducing heat, and making sure sparks flew downward away from any possible vapors. The reason for the disclaimer at the beginning of the video is apparent. The danger is real unless you take precautions.

I like the gap idea but instead of wireing the lid shut a simple heavy rock on top would suffice

I don’t know why everyone over thinks cutting this thing off you don’t need to fill the barrel with water if you want to put water on the top of the lid just put a metal blade on a saws all and you can cut it off in minutes without creating any heat

Probably because of all the videos you can easily find where people try and do this and cause explosions and fires.

"Video editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video shots to create a new work." ...I don't believe I implied I accomplished this feat in 11 minutes...I don't think you'd have watched a video of me plugging and unplugging extension cords: testing the fire extinguisher: setting up lights and cameras and generally moving around for an hour and a half.
