"DUEL" is a fantastic movie! Spielberg's directorial debut is a thriller full of suspense, reminiscent of Hitchcock. Carey Loftin, one of Hollywood's greatest Stunt drivers was behind the wheel of this ominous Peterbilt truck. The only lasting "Needlenose" from the movie made an appearance at a truck show in 2021! ( Can you tell I love this movie? 🤭😎) Starring: Dennis Weaver, '71 Plymouth Valiant, (3) Peterbilts and of course Carey Loftin (BULLITT, VANISHING POINT & more!)

This is where they got that slogan for a vegetable juice drink. Dennis Weaver was thinking wow I could have had a V-8. 🤣🤣

This i think is still Spielbergs best movie! This was a simple but genius idea! The scenery the vehicles and the soundtrack all perfect for a cult road movie! Perfectly filmed ,weaver was great and the trucker could certainly drive! Love the fact that every detail is shown? Trucks use a low gear! So he goes through the box to top! I have always wondered what the top speed on both vehicles was? Its obviously speeded up but it works!

Just drove these roads on Soledad and sierra highway , what i didn’t realize is they’re going down hill most of the time in the movie. And the roadways are much more narrow than the movie makes it seem. Carey Loftin was probably having a heluva time with that truck .

If I remember correctly, they used a 1955 Peterbilt 361 for the Train scene, while for the rest of the film, it was a 1955 Peterbilt 281.
@rogerstlaurent8704 Жыл бұрын
You are very correct there were 3 different trucks used in the movie
@jks38495 ай бұрын
The 589 doesn't even hold a candle to the 281/351
@awildjared13964 ай бұрын
the one used for the train scene is a 1960 pete 351, the back up (never shown in the movie, but still exists) is a (i think) 1957 pete 281, and the truck shown in most of the movie is the '55 281 that we all know and love
@BlueMule744 ай бұрын
@rogerstlaurent8704 , If you count the one built up for the Incredible Hulk episode than it is actually 4 different trucks
@BlueMule744 ай бұрын
@awildjared1396 , The one mostly shown in the film was a 1957 Peterbilt 281 that gets destroyed in the final scene of the film after it goes down the cliff although it was previously said to be a 1955 by two previous drivers that had driven the truck before it was used to film Duel new documents have now surfaced that proves that it was actually a 1957 The 1960 Peterbilt 281 was it's back up truck that was never used any where once so ever in the film, But, Was built up once the 1673 Cat Engine in the original 1957 Truck began giving the film production problems and not knowing if the original 1957 Truck would make it to the end of filming the 1960 Truck was built up because they were on a tight time schedule for filming and yes this truck still exists today that has a small cam NTC-350HP Cummins Engine although it originally had a 262HP Cummins Engine until the end of 1995 when the original 262HP Cummins Engine had blown up A 1962 Peterbilt 351 that also featured a 1673 Cat Engine was built up for the extended scene's that were filmed in April of 1972 and this truck does appear in bus push, rail road and part of gas attendant scenes...It also has been said that this truck is long gone today The last truck if you count it was a 1964 Peterbilt 351 that was built up for an incredible hulk episode that had featured a 262HP Cummins Engine and the last time that truck was seen was right around 1983 in a warehouse on the back lot of Hollywood Universal Studio Truck Lots although it has seemed to have disappeared since than and I am guessing that it was sold to an individual around that time where it would of been sent back to work

by the experience i've had in old trucks powerwise.a 170 slant 6 valiant would have NO problems outrunning a 1955 tractor trailer.especially up a minor grade.there werent many BIG horse diesels that early in the game.most 250-300 horse trucks fall on their faces climbing a hill with an empty trailer.
@curbyourenthusiasm9874 Жыл бұрын
I think the truck was heavily modified or something
@maxburner3500 Жыл бұрын
David Mann stated at the dinner that the truck must have had a "souped up diesel engine". Considering the driver is possibly a serial killer, it is plausible he must have modified his truck to be able to catch up and hunt down his victims cars.

Carey Loftin who was the truck driver was regarded as one of hollywoods greatest stunt drivers and stunt coordinators, he was also the stunt coordinator in the movie Bullitt, he’s also a member of the stuntman’s Hall of fame. He had a pretty impressive resume to say the least. R.I.P Carey Loftin and the great Dennis Weaver.

Shows just how great the film was as I missed differences of the Truck. Too busy watching the chase.The little 1/43 scale diecast model Truck I bought just recently has an overall dark metallic flat bronze with some darker shades of stain and no hydraulic connection to the tanker. I noticed that in a scene from the left side of the truck point of view chasing the Plymouth Valiant in the film. I guess you can't have everything.👍🇭🇲🦘✌️
