I love what he said: "its so simple thats why we call it simple" . simple words that makes the whole video so simple.

Thanks for the shoutout. Most my work are for paying customers, and although I have been told I "over engineer" my cabinets - I also take pride that I have never had to go back for warranty repairs either.The cabinets look great.The only thing I would add on this video is that you might consider (just consider...some people are religious about this topic though) is to use all MDF for the cabinet doors when they are painted. I love wood, really kind of hate MDF. However, for non-structural applications...especially ones that you want to remain flat and square...MDF is hard to beat all around. You don't have issues with blow out when milling profiles for 5 piece construction. Glue up is easy, since the movement is uniform across the material...it will all move together. With the right primer, it paints up like a dream.I don't care for the routed MDF doors on CNC machines (or done by hand...if you really like to punish yourself), but you can use the same tooling for routing a 5 piece door out of 3/4" MDF strips for your frame and whatever you prefer for the panel (flat, reverse, raised...1/4", 1/2", 3/4"...).The time saved, money saved and hassles saved make it my go to material for this particular application.

Great video. I see what you mean about the knobs. In fact, when this video first started, my eyes were drawn the knobs and I had that feeling something was not quite right. They are too close to the lower edge. Also, it appears the right pair are not quite the same height. But the whole thing looks great, especially the joinery on the rail/styles.

Hi Matt, thanks for the video. Nice cabinet with a pleasant finish and low cost. I think that you could have simplified the door construction in line with the rest of the cabinet construction but, as is often the case, it might be that you had no choice but to match other items in your house.
@Mattsbasementworkshop9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Harmed without a doubt the door construction could have been EVEN MORE simplified. It could easily have been a single panel attached to the hinges LOL.
@jeffharmed16169 жыл бұрын
+Matt Vanderlist I think you would agree that a single panel of solid wood would warp before long and look odd. A panel of plywood you say? Possibly. If you were really careful about filling and painting the edges. Modern paints are so plastic-like that you just might be able to get away with it for a few years. But I would not be happy with that either. No, I would make a simple butt-jointed frame as per the face frame Matt made earlier using pocket holes. slap on a 1/4 inch plywood sheet on the back to hide the pocket holes and then bead the edges, and front insides of the frame to make it look like a floating panel. The looks without the extra work.

+Jeff Harmed To avoid the possibility of the single panel door warping (solid wood or ply) one could apply battens across the back to help add rigidity and reinforcement. It's not an uncommon practice. But for certain the frame of the door could be constructed in the same manner as the face frames using pocket holes joinery or even dowels. Rather than applying a plywood piece to the back, I might route a rabbet on the interior of the frame, drop it in and then apply a simple but decorative molding to hide it. And then to hide the pocket holes, it's easy to apply plugs. The beauty of woodworking is that there's always options LOL!

+Matt Vanderlist, since you are painting it, why not fill the holes with joint compound? Would that work? Thanks for doing such a superb job with all of your videos!
@BTimmer8 жыл бұрын
+ode2george There are actually 'official' plugs that will fit the pocket holes and cover them nicely.
