LPL, my wife's 2007 Softail has that switch. Your assumptions about that switch are... not quite right. Yes, the switch has 3 postions, ignition on, off in the center, and accessories on. That little tubular lock is design ONLY for the purpose of locking the switch in the off position to prevent people from turning the switch on and draining the battery on your bike. The security, the REAL security on the bike, comes from the integrated security system that disables the engine, ie, it will not start or run, without the RFID key fob being in close proximity, about 5-6 feet, from the bike. Thus, a Harley rider, like my wife, can ride somewhere with the fob in the pocket of her riding jacket. Then, she can turn the ignition switch off and walk away, and no one can start her bike. If she's worried about kids messing with the switch and draining the battery, she can use the tubular lock to prevent them from turning the ignition switch and draining the battery. But later, she walks back to her bike, wearing her jacket, and the fob is again in range. She turns the switch, and the bike can be fired up for the ride home. So, the real lock on a Harley, at least anything made in the last 10 years, is the RFID key fob. I'm curious to see if you could "pick" one of those...

+Rick Koehler Are you sure that isn't a dealer-installed option, because that's what it looks like from HDs website.
@koehlerrk17 жыл бұрын
A few months ago my wife and I went to a HD demo ride. All the 2018 bikes have the key fob system. Back in 2007 with my wifes bike it was an option to delete the security system, but you had to special order the bike that way. I'm not sure when they started the security system with the option to delete it, but the modules you see on the HD website are for the people who have the bikes without the system, so they can add one. That said, it does require dealer-level re-programming of the computer to tell the bike if it needs a "green light" from the security module to enable engine starting.

You got to make sure you change the backup code or anybody can start your bike if the switch is unlocked. It's either 12345 or 31313 by default, I think it varies. I think to use it, you turn the ignition on, press both turn signal buttons then use the left to increment the number and right to move one digit to the right

Ghetto version is to use a pen cap that is made of "soft" plastic. Push it in, hammer a few times and turn ;)
@andrewrandolph62022 жыл бұрын
Does that really work? I deffinately need more details bcz I locked my forks and lost my keys
@crispy-k2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewrandolph6202 It worked for me, had locked my scooter and somehow lost the key off my key chain. (with a lock that has the same round key) Pushed the "pen cap" into the hole, tapped a few times with pliers, not very hard, just enough to see the cap sink a few millimeters into the key hole, and thus engaging the pins. Once it doesn't go deeper, you can hold onto the top of the cap with some pliers and turn (some locks require you to push in, then you can turn). Should work. Might take you a few tries depending on the cap you use, and if your lock is a bit old and doesn't turn so easy. Hope you get it unlocked :) I've always wondered if this could be done with a cola can, cut out a square piece of the can, roll it into a "straw" (hold it together with tape so it doesn't unfold?) and insert one end into the lock, tap on the other end, and the metal from the can should be soft enough to take the shape of the pins, and be strong enough to turn also (probably shouldn't make the "straw" too long so it doesn't collapse when tapping it). Might be more reliable since you can make multiple layers of the can/straw to make it more or less rigid. I guess? The plastic cap method will probably only work once or twice since it's soft plastic and will not stay in shape for long. I did open my lock 3 times with the same cap, 1 to get my scooter obviously haha, and 2 times because friends didn't believe me. This was probably back in 2006, was from a youtube video i found, and that wasn't long after youtube got known so there weren't many videos back then. But i was one of the first ones around here so i did get to see all the cool tutorials before all the fake, staged and scam videos came along. Yawn haha. Cheers

Unless I'm mistaken, most recent Harley Davidson motorcycles have a feature that allows one to lock the fork in an extreme position with a heavy-duty, high security padlock of one's own choosing.. That's the _real_ security feature, and the ignition switch is a secondary feature.

id like to add that usually these bikes have key fobs that need to be near the bike to actually start the engine. so even though the ignition can be left unlocked you would need to know the 5 digit security code on the bikes digital security system to start the engine with out the fob. PSA to HD owners: change your code because you probably havnt changed it so its still the factory code witch means its very easily googled. ive won many beers over betting on this.

Motorcycle start\stop is generally a main ignition switch that switches power only then handlebar control for run\stop. On the right side you'll get an on\off switch and a "push for the starter" switch. It's a bit safer since you'll already have your hands on the handle bars, you can hold the clutch and brake making sure the bike won't lurch forward should you be starting it in gear. Plus it's a lot easier to get going again should you stall it at a stop light or whatnot.

I just bought a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe. Oh man is this bikes beautiful. But the previous owner lost all the keys. Until I get my registration in the mail I can't get a key made from the dealership. I think it's like $50. Which I find to be bulshit because Harley-Davidson overcharges for absolutely every single thing. But anyways being a fan of your channel for a while and actually becoming a lock picture myself I was intrigued watching videos on this subject. It's all so crazy because I called the dealership today and they want me to bring the bike in so they can write down the VIN number. Then when I get my registration in 2 days I'm supposed to bring that in so that they can verify that I owned the bike. Then after the verification of the motorcycle then they will order me the key. So I'm supposed to leave after that trip without a key to only go back to pick up my key. Now the dealership is about 30 Mi away give or take five or six miles. So I think that's a lot of unnecessary BS driving back and forth just to get a damn key made

This is not the ignition lock used on Dynas that one the key turns the switch and stays in the lock with the switch being located below the seat on the right side of the bike.

Don't think I have ever seen a motorcycle ignition lock that could not be picked. The myth that tubular locks are see difficult to pick is just that a myth. They do take a little longer of you are single pin picking.

Fortunately for me my Harley doesn't have this lock\stitch. I have the Sportster and it has what i assume is a impenetrable wafer lock lol

if the owner were to hard wire a cheap pre pay burner phone to the bike hidden well and always on and always paid up to date that phone on silent mode of course would act as a cheap and extremely reliable tracking device if the bike was ever stolen, it also works for cars, trucks ATVs jet skis heavy equipment and boats, well anything mobile with an electrical system

Makes you think about the rest of the construction of those, for most parts, CHINESE bikes
If the fork isn't locked, this ignition switch can be swapped out in less than 1 minute by someone who has done it before, or 5 minutes by a first time thief. Why bother picking a lock that can be swapped with a basic hand tool in such a short amount of time. These ignition switches cost $50. They can steal your bike and sell it for a couple thousand really fast. They won't mind losing $50.

I had bikes in the 80s with better security than that.

I'm still not convinced it's a genuine HD lock. You can go to dozens of catalogs like custom Crome, JP cycles etc just because you buy it at a salvage yard and have keys made does not prove its Genuine HD lock. Again I'm not saying a true HD is any harder to pick
