Just did a rotten passage ourselves. We can normally outrun anything but today the sea was just so confused swell from every direction. Poor old Oscar he really does not like the rough stuff and while we and the boat are happy we now use the Oscar comfort factor to passage plan. Sail safe guys. Ant, Cid and the pooch crew. xx

If it's a 2.5kW inverter, 2500W/12V = 200A, so a 300A fuse is not unreasonable. Glad you survived the passage!

Can recommend Stugeron for seasickness prevention. Two before a crossing then one about every 5-6 hours. As for seacocks I always sailed with these closed, only opening as needed and then closing again. And as for things electrical, Ryan you are good at DIY so place all key components well above waterline and possibly wrapped in something waterproof etc. In the days of RDF I lost my receiver as it was in a low locker that got water in. Happy cruising.

Great videos, I collected a new to us boat from Casterdellfels, south of Barcelona in early May and we sailed to Fornells in 39 to 40 knot winds and 3 to 4m seas. First time we had moved our new boat so a great test sail. Anchored in Fornells for 2 days had good holding but moved to Mahon for a couple of nights as gusts over 50 knots from N. Then sailed to Cagliari, Sardinia and had 40 to 50 knot winds for 10 hours coming into Sardinia. Guess it’s a windy place. Feel for you guys, I did sleep off watch but we were in PAOMIA our Amel Super Maramu. Enjoy and keep sailing Fare winds and following seas

No matter how much sailing sucks just remember in a few days I have to go back to work... installing inverters in vans as it happens. I duno if anyone already answered, or if you still need to know but... Ohms law (V/I=R) is the relationship between volts current and resistance if you have any two you can calculate the third same applies to power calculations (P/V=I) so if you have a 3500w inverter divide the wattage by the voltage to get the current. So at the output 3500W/230v = 15A. If it’s a 12v inverter then at the input 3500w/12 = 291A. But that dosnt look like a 3.5Kw inverter. If it’s not too late, with what your doing you will want a true sine inverter, computers and stuff want to see a mains style waveform and might get upset if they don’t get it. It wants installing as close as possible to the batteries, you get volt drop when you pull lots of current over long distances so you might have 12v at the batteries but if you draw a lot of power might only get 10v at the inverter, which the inverter won’t like. Make sure your fuse is below the rating of the cables so they don’t set on fire and above the rating of the inverter so it doesn't blow. Connections need to be really tight or they will burn up too. You might want some kind of battery protection too, I would normally wire an inverter to only work when the engines running so the powers comes from the alternator rather than the batteries which could quickly kill them... oh and there’s very little that’s worse for electronics than sea water, but I think you got that. I’m playing catch-up with your videos but hope I’m in time to help

it is a good idea to wear PFD's of some kind if you are off shore, also if you are moored in serious storm type conditions. especially if you are sailing with a small crew. It does not take much to slip and wind up in the drink, and then it's too late if you don't have on your PFD. something to keep in mind...........
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 4 жыл бұрын
Why PFDs? Do you think they're safer than a harness and tether that we use when we consider it appropriate? I'd rather not fall overboard than fall overboard and float thanks!
@010203040506073
@010203040506073 4 жыл бұрын
If you're offshore more farther than realistic swimming distance back to land, especially if you're sailing with a small crew, you really want some kind of PFD, whether or not you use a safety harness. If you're anchored in a serious storm, you want to wear a PFD then as well. Things can happen quickly and unexpectedly on a boat. If you're anchored in a storm, sitting downstairs sipping a cup of tea, and CRASH a loose boat rams into you - you're going to scramble upstairs as fast as you can, and you're going to be without your PFD if you don't have it on beforehand - that's reality. What if you get dizzy, sneeze, and lose your footing on deck and go over the side as the boat is sailing along offshore in pretty flat water at 4 knots ? Are you going to be able to swim fast enough to catch up to the boat ? Probably not. And what if your fellow crew member is sleeping downstairs, and does not hear any commotion or your yelling as you recede farther and farther from the vessel. I don't know if you've even been hit on the head in earnest by the boom, but I have - and it is rather "stunning" no pun intended. You can easily be knocked out by that. If that happens offshore, good chance you could wind up drowning and/or left behind in the water as your vessel sails on, if you go over the side. Once when I was young, I was sitting on the bowsprit of a pretty big sailboat in the Pacific, sailing along very nicely through around 11-12' swells which kind of steep. and resting a little bit, probably 17-18 kts. of wind, which the boat was handling perfectly well - and a sportfisherman came by out of the blue, maybe 4-5 boat 'lengths away in the open Pacific, at full speed and threw up a +/- 6 wake crosswise to the seas that were running, and that almost put me into the drink, very very close. And no one on board would have seen me fall in, and when I realized that - it scared the hell out of me. You don't have to wear one of the super-colossal PFD's all the time - but if you're offshore single-handing or with a small crew, wear some kind of PFD. It's up to you, but that's my suggestion.

Maybe get a small inverter for stuff like laptops and a bigger one for whatever your big loads are? No need to put 10W into running a 1kW inverter to power yopur laptop. You can also get 12V-19V laptop adapters to do that directly, BTW - just look for a chunky potted one rather than the "100W, honest guv, and only $10" style. You want a big heat sink open on one side with the circuitry inside that and potted into a solid lump. Top looks like this: i.imgur.com/C8qpyA7.png and they're readily available from your usual suspects. If you do that you should also buy the exact plug your laptop needs to put on the end of it :) Possibly also use something like an XT30 plug/socket in series so if you have two different laptops you can make one cable for each (just don't use the same plugs for both 12V and 19V... ahem, I have never made that mistake, honest)

MrR6pilot LOL! There’s enough factors that go into a sail plan, if we added “not on a Friday” as a factor, we’d rarely sail 😅

PS there was a big problem with the forecasting in the Med this spring. The Jet Stream was in the Med for 2 months messing up all forecasts completely.

We've found windy's ICON forecast to be generally spot on since the jet stream went up north where it belongs :)
