Hey, there is a ground screw 🪛 behind the Katana mini, have you tried pulling a wire from it and grounding it?

I purposefully bought the Katana because it was battery powered. I have bigger amps (and a DAW at my computer) for when I want to do more serious things, but these portable battery amps are perfect for little jams or practice sessions where I don’t want to drag heavy equipment around. I do recommend investing in rechargeables for anyone going this route. Amazon Basics brand ones are surprisingly good if you want to go cheap.

If I understand correctly, the reason it buzzes less when you touch the strings is that doing so grounds yourself. I'm not sure why using a power supply vs batteries would make this worse, but I do feel confident in saying that it is related to grounding. If I'm totally full of beans about this, feel free to correct

That is because there is a chance that the wall outlet is not grounded correctly, hence the noise, or the guitar electronics are not grounded or appropriately shielded. The latter hardly matters.

@@dragonAwkward My best guess would be dirty power / other things on the same breaker. I had to get an isolated line to clean my stuff up. Now the only noise I get is interference heh (as opposed to electric noise creeping in). Ground hum may always be an issue with any single coil going into an outlet though, given that that's the cycles at which we get power (60hz)

I tried it out with a solid grounding and a powersupply. In the back of the boss mini there is a grounding connection. If you hook it up to a solid ground the noise reduces drasticly. Hope it helps. Chears

My single coil Tele hums when I use my Marshall 10 watt practice amp, but when I plug it into the Katana mini, no hum at all!

I can confirm it does not fix the problem. Boss katana mini has grounding problem, which can be fixed easily by using dedicated (it's already there) screw on the back.

But I have a feeling the Boss is probably one of the Top options for 'mini amps' or low watt, budget, practice... people call it lots of things. Should I just use my computer speakers?

I use a small 9 volt adaptor. Without the Batteries Works great No noise. Love this amp!

Default (wrong) answer is grounding issue. Wrong in this case. Beginner guitarists always say hum is grounding. The problem is that you're using an unshielded power supply and whatever circuitry they are using is putting out a tonne of interference. To test, move further away from you power supply (with a lead) and check if it fades. Your strings act as a giant antenna.

Update - received adjustable power supply from Amazon - digital led display $17 - and results are great as expected - the tiny little buzz when not playing doesn't bother me at all - it's very minimal and I prefer using a noise gate anyway - still dialing it in - runs fine on just under 6v - 5.85 right now -

When you strum the guitar and want a clean sound just keep a part of your hand on the bridge very lightly to ground the guitar hum. I hated electric guitar coming from an acoustic background. Now that I’ve accepted the hum and what it takes to reduce it I find electric guitar really fun.

Yours is the first comment I came across that went to the first thing which came to my mind - single coils are always susceptible to this, certainly far more than humbuckers. Thereafter, there are multiple things which can introduce noise to varying degrees: power supply, nearby interference, amp, leads, etc, etc.

I own this amp. I have two so i have more volume and run in stereo. I use my power bank to power it amd I batteries on hand as back-up. My rig .... pedals, amp and p.a. speakers are all powered by rechargeable batteries. My pedals and Boss Katana Mini are powered by my 2 power banks. One for the pedals and one for the 2 amplifiers. My p.a and my mixer are also powered by thier own rechargeable power source. No hum or buzz.and no need to plug into anything....at least not right away. On my pedal board has a pedal that has built-in grounding to fix any grounding issues. My power bank also has gounding too and reduces noice.

this is bound to happen on a battery-powered amp. Grounding is something you can never get rid of in cases like these. Over that, are you really looking to record using a practise amp? An audio interface would be the better choice, after all you will get on at the same price

My Katana does exactly the same. For some time I wondered if I had some earth problem in the household wiring, but I have checked in different houses with the same outcome. The amount of noise does seem to vary at different times through the day. You have to imagine there is some sort of interference happening somewhere though I have no idea. On batteries its absolutely fine.

Thanks for the posting this video. I am about to purchase this amp so I found the video very helpful. 👍 One problem with BOTH of the power supplies you used (I see the one Amazon recommends) is that they are both 2-Prong plugs which do not ground properly. You need to use a 3-Prong plug and a (Correctly grounded) 3-Prong wall socket. Note that not all 3-Prong wall sockets are correctly grounded either but this is easy to determine using a simple multimeter (Google how to test the wall socked for proper ground) If you are plugging into a power strip you need one with isolated sockets. Also try removing the batteries before you connect an AC power supply. Lastly, a question: Have you tried a guitar with humbucking pickups? My Tele buzzes through any amp I plug it into if there is even a small amount of gain, but none of my guitars with humbuckers buzz when swapping them out with the Tele.

Exact same issue. The Amazon power supply is unusable imo. I have a humbucker and it still buzzed like crazy. Debating on sending the whole amp back to get a bigger one with a ground plug. Battery power sounds fine though.

Apart from interference with the EM radiation of the electric cords, different power supplies apply different circuitry to sieve AC out, which can seep into the amp. You can be sure that the branded Roland supply is of a much higher quality electronic circuitry than a generic one costing less than one third of its price...

If you have an amp plug into a power socket and you have fluorescent lighting in that room or in the building the function of the fluorescent lighting tubes will produce a buzz through the entire electrical circuit they can come through your amp

Thanks for the demo. I really don't like noise. I did similar testing with a Pignose mini amp. But the results you've found basically apply to any amp: BATTERY - quietest. HIGH QUALITY adaptor - quiet. CHEAP ADAPTOR - noisy! I'm no expert on this stuff but noise when not touching the strings is completely normal too on any amp. As people have commented, you become the ground when you touch the strings. Regarding power supplies, no surprise at all that a "wall wart" style adaptor is going to be noisier than a larger brick style supply. Generally with power supplies, the bigger and heavier, the better! Isolated power is obviously crucial. I can't remember the exact difference in circuitry but the cheap and small / light 9V 2 AMP wall adaptors are notorious for noise. They are lacking some important parts to keep noise down. When buying 9V "wall wart" style adaptors, you want the BIG, chunky, heavy ones. Battery is always the quietest, as there is no external power noise coming into the pedal. Grid power is typically quite noisy and people use dedicated power conditioners between the grid and their music gear to eliminate suck noise.

Thanks for the demo. I am considering purchasing this amp to get around the buzz problem with my current amps. I never had a problem with buzz until I recently moved. As mentioned in another comment the problem is the wiring in the house. My old house had original wiring except for the addition of 2 circuits. Dishwasher and A.C... My new house has LED lighting, dimmer switches, and many added circuits which have contributed to the overall problem. Emi and Rfi. I have no problem with the tv or stereo. I have countless hours trouble shooting and think the only solution is to totally rewire the house or move. Neither is a realistic option. I am thinking to mic the amp like you did and use battery power. The buzz you experienced in your vid using battery power could be Rfi. The Roland adapter you used had a ferrite choke on the cord. The generic adapter probably has minimal built quality and filtering.

I spent around 200 hours messing around with all the eq in the studio. It was like Skyrim came out for me but on the guitar. I was addicted to finding a great metal tone and get rid of that buzz until a month later I bought a 7 string. After a few hours on the new 7 chugging chugs I dropped my phone and it tweaked a setting and all of a sudden muted the buzz. I also got some feed back from the phone as well. So there I am happy as can be so buzz at all when I take me hands off. It comes and goes but I perfected the no buzz tone. After many more hours of trying to get the right metal tone. Because that mistake made it sound like you got water in one ear. I don't believe it's a ground issue. That amp is very sensitive to other devices around you. I would not allow anyone to turn the TV on while I was playing. Nor would I have my led showroom lights on because of the IR receiver. I would only have a led lamp on in the room and my phone. I swapped the regular light bulb for led Incase it may had interference. I spent months figuring out as to why this kept happening. I went as far as buying more expensive gold braided cables. It's just a sensitive amp. My main is a 2010 Gibson LP studio alnico p90s with 11 gauge cobalt strings I found to be the best so far.

Shouldn't you Take Out the batteries when you Plug it In? Like any pedal. You don't leave the battery in and plug in an adapter. Or does it not work at all if the batteries are out of it?

that's why i never understood the point of a battery powered amp, the reason it makes a slight buzzing noise is because of the battery compartment where the battery goes. when you plug in a power supply, it interferes with it. i had a Boss Katana Mini, and i got annoyed with it after awhile. it sounds pretty good for a small amp, but you can get other amps that are small like this that don't require a battery. now i watched a few others review this and i don't hear that buzzing, but i had it and it does buzz.

I have the correct roland adaptor and only get buzz with my tone up (squier tele contemporary rh - which is known to have grounding issues because of the black hardware)

Don't be silly: when you're not touching the strings what you hear is the strings vibrate, and when you touch the strings you don't hear them because you're holding them still so they can't vibrate. It has nothing to do with AC hum. You will always hear a little AC hum when you use a single single coil pickup or a humbucker that can be split into a single coil, and that's actually pretty cool. Listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimmy Hendrix during quiet passages: you'll hear the humming from their single coils, and it sounds good because it gives you a sense of proximity, like you're just sitting right there a couple of feet from them while they play.

It doesnt buzz when ur hand is on strings because there is always small vibrations in the air that makes the strings vibrate a bit and pickup gets that and makes it a buzz

I've bought it and its the perfect practice amp when battery supplied, tho i haven't tried it using power adaptor but i can say it would work just fine, some amount of noise wouldn't bother that much. Also it has great distortion!

You have capacitance and you just touched your grounded strings making a filter of sorts. I bought the Katana mini because it fits in a suitcase and with Roland's universal adaptor I can use it in the US or Africa or where ever else I end up. Other than my Telecaster this little amp is my favorite piece of practice gear.

I double checked with an electrical engineer n we're convinced the cheap power supplies bleed some AC noise, which causes the hissing. It's not a grounding issue.

Well - 'finally pretty much got my axe back up and replaced the most awesome amp I ever had with a simple little Boss Katina Mini that is smaller than a kids lunch pail and runs on batteries no less and as the batteries run down I've noticed it gets sweeter sounding as the led light gets dimmer - hmmm - GOT and idea! Once I get a power supply I think I'll get an adjustable voltage that goes 0 - 12v and use it like Eddie used a variac. If you guys recall he kept how he got his sound a secret by saying he cranked the voltage UP to 140v and watched the tubes melt lol - BUT in reality he turned the voltage down to 60v and that is the real secret (I wished I'd have known back in the day) as my Carvin amp sounded best on half power and cranked all the way up. So will update you guys on how that works out. Anyway now I have no effects other than a slight delay that is built into this little mini (which is PERFECT as I hate reverbs esp those old springers) and no loading software into my computer and linking up the amp and learning all the parameters of EQ -ing, distortion, compression, phasers, flangers, chorusing, etc etc etc just simple bass mid and treble gain and master (along with my Hi Pass - Lo Pass wired into my guitar with push button pickups that I can use any combo of bridge mid and neck or all at once if I like) and I'm getting fabulous tones! I'm really amazed and now concentrating on just playing with SIMPLE adjustments which is exactly where I need to be as my axe was broken in my move and had been collecting dust on the wall while I was very busy with other life matters - but hoping now I can spend some real time getting my licks back.

This is classic 50/60 Hz ground hum. Only way to get rid of that is by buying a power adapter which has a grounded plug (the one that goes to the socket) and then an isolated output.

To be fair, this is a spontaneous jam amp and it's unlikely anyone would use it for recording. For the price this seems like an awesome amp and still cheap even if you have to purchase a PSU.

Cube user I like to use rechargeable batteries it dead quiet . Same problem with guitar pedals, and other devices that are plugged into a wall circuit. Even other Roland or boss power supplies. I like guitar pedals run on batteries too.

I had the same issue. I purchased an adaptor, plugged it in and I discovered some sort of noise. Absolutely annoying. I then returned the adaptor and started using batteries. I have a question. Does adding a Boss noise supressor help ?

Any plugged in amp is going to hum. It's ground loop noise from the rest of your house. The battery only mode isn't connected to ground.

I bought a 9V adapter in Amazon, you can look it as "bluecoil adapter 9 V 670 mA", and problem solved, no noise and power unlimited...

I am only using my Katana Mini for a little practice amp, so that slight sound doesn't bother me, I don't want to constantly buy new batteries, so eventually the Boss PSB-1U 9v adaptor will pay for itself, I will continue to use batteries, but only where I can't plug into the grid.

Do you know how many ohms this speaker is, 4, 8, 16? A guy put Jensen 'mod' speakers in his portable $400 keyboard and now it sounds like a $1000 keyboard. I have 2Katana mini's for 3yrs to my stereo Digitech rp3 (yes 1997 dinosaur)... but still awesome and those Jensen 'mod's are like celestion 'mini vintage 30's in my opinion. new sub

About power supply (PS)... Almost all amps with electric source always like that, especially no ground terminal, like that PS. It's normal... pLus... Your guitar is single coil which has greater noise. Try with humbucker coil. I believe it will be better. Anyway... If you record something, use good pedals and amps. Not traveling amps like katana mini, blackstar fly, etc...

single coil pickups have buzz and well guess what cables also allow some buzz expecially that junk one your using on the guitar and all amps have buzz , the adapter you first pluged in ok we all heard the buzz and walarts like these power supplys are not grounded and dont need to be also you not supposed to have the battteries in the amp when using a power supply like holy hanna . some power supplys filter out the noise better then others to there is another reason why your getting some buzz witha power supply but lets see if you can fiquire that out on your own becuase that iam not going to tell you why it happens

You must have a dirty power line somewhere. I have this problem in my house in the UK. Are you using pedals powered by the mains (not sure what you call it in the States… grid maybe)? That will do it!!! I run my Katana Mini off of rechargeable batteries and all of my pedals are powered by a battery pack and a little Joyo adapter that connects this to my 8 way power brick. No buzz whatsoever 😊. I can easily play for a couple of hours a day for a month before recharging

i have the orange mini its a funny little speaker nothing awesome but it takes 9v batteries like my acoustic and i also use it as a laptop speaker with aux id say it serves me well , but if i want a serious sound i play on my mustang 25

@@5MinuteMusic mine has to be connected with aux and also have a guitar wire plugged to work properly even without having the guitar (electronics are crazy lol) anyway you wont be disappointed it will outperform almost any bluetooth speaker in the same price

You must not play much metal cause the buzzes and hisses and white noise become a part of the music--LOL
