On a personal level, I'm now thankful that we had Nelson around at that time. His "Club Kid" videos are a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of my friends and I in that very special era. But most Importantly, Nelson created a culturally significant archive of his life and surroundings and the lives and surroundings of other people during the 80's. The "Club Kids" just happened to be part of the surroundings in Nelson's world at that time. I'm 100% sure that Nelson would be "THE" superstar Vlogger if he were around today. It's amazing to see so much appreciation for his work, 25+ years on.

I was too young to be club kid by a few years but what's fascinating about this footage is it feels EXACTLY like house parties I attended in the mid 90s as a full blown raver and party promoter, where the movers and shakers (and no small amount of hangers on) of the party scene would have their little get togethers. The drugs were the same, the age group, personality blend, and young-adult insecurities and bravado were all the same. It puts the Alig scene into extremely relatable context for me, their particular scene broke through into the national zeitgeist, in no small thanks to Michael's pathology, but apparently it was fundamentally the same as my experience. I suppose this isn't new knowledge, hell, there are probably kids out there right now riding the crest of whatever scene they're into much like You, I, and Nelson did in our day, and it probably looks like this.

I watched an amazing interview with Michael, filmed after his release from prison. I had always thought he was some crazy narcissistic asshole who wanted to kill people. But in the interview, he explains what happened, takes responsibility, talks about how they were all on drugs and crazy out of their minds for the most part, they were panicking at the time, they were shocked at what had taken place, and when they hid the body, they were really (as anyone might, in the situation) just trying, desperately, to "make it all go away". If you've never been strung out on heroin or cocaine, I would say you can't really judge whether it's possible to be so "our of their minds" that one would actually murder someone, cut up their body, etc. They talked about how they actually told people they had killed Angel, along the way. He says he's quite sure he wanted to get caught, actually. When I learned later he died last year, I was saddened to find he had gone back to the drugs. Sad case, all the way around. RIP to all of them

This is priceless. Most of the footage from that time is sanitised. To actually be filming in THAT apartment as well. Nelson is adorable. I know he was an incredibly kind man. Loyal to his friends. Alig was an interesting character. He played down his childhood abuse but I really believe he had a disassociation complex that ultimately led to his self destruction. That's not to excuse his crimes but it may go some way to explain how he ended in that very dark place. He had no business sense. He should have been wealthy had he exploited his success. Sadly he was exploited by practically everyone he worked for or with. Of course it can be argued that it was these issues and frailties that spawned his talents. Of course many in that circle were a lot more focused and went on to do big things. He reminds me a little of Steve Strange who should of had a long career but sadly ruined by an addiction to smack. Fascinating

Back in the 80s, before the invention of the "Selfie Stick" It's actually kind of amazing this got documented so well. Back then video cameras were big, heavy, expensive and tapes went bad easily. If you wanted good quality video, a tape only lasted 2 hours, then you need to buy a new one if you want to keep your recordings. You could get 6 hours out of a tape but video quality was low. Nelson clearly put a big effort into this at substantial expense to himself. Back then, video wasn't particularly difficult but it was enough of a pain in the rear to where very few people recorded daily activities. The video camera was typically reserved for special, or unusual events. Nelson had the vision to get a good, overall, video record of their lives at that time.

I like Nelson's videos better when he isn't with this group. There is a sinister and dark sense with these club kids. I enjoy seeing him with Rupaul, Lahoma, Liz, Dick, and the older crowd. They seem more connected and genuinely nice to one another.

For the most part, here is gathering on a day that few could appreciate, being immersed in materiality rather than spirituality. Because of that, they were, overall, broken, lost, marginally-functional and, like Michael, demented. A close friend of Michael's reflecting on his overdose, said that his attempts to save Michael failed because Michael was a severely damaged soul. He reported that after his release from prison, his life, his mentality, worsened considerably. He knew what he'd done. G-d has a way of bringing retribution in ways that "civilized" society falls short of delivering. Michael should never have been incarcerated. He should have been swiftly put to death for the incredible cruelty of the murder. So, in the end, his torment and suicide was a rectification of the judgements meted out by men.

I agree with you. It is❗ I enjoy it. They all had a past...but some of the Club Kids past was _very_ _nightmarish_ and others was just bad or a semigood past. I find it kind~of sad, because I feel that most of the Kids were dealing with depression and loneliness, which led to alcoholism drug abuse and loneliness. Even if some of the Club Kids parent(s) were rich or well off and may at times even supported their Kid, they could've dealt with loneliness and craved all of the wrong kind of attention. Others just did not give a damn and just threw shit to the wind and became rebellious .Most immature for sure.

Katharine Rentz I certainly met him a few times throughout the years of club going, but this was common knowledge that was swirling around at the time. The good, the bad and the ugly was discussed-and from people who certainly really did know him well. Many of us who "knew" him always remembered him as clean, well dressed, organized (believe it or not) and a slave to certain club customs and etiquette. When he became hooked on heroin and "real" drugs beyond a bit of pot and X that was as common as water at the time, he became dirty, looked horrible, his clothing ratty and recycled (not a fresh look-or even kept), and no longer were things attended to in the clubs. It became a free for all with all sorts of riff raff and people that would never be allowed access to the VIP sacrosanct areas of Limelight, and Club USA (the clubs I frequented most along with Pyramid Club and earlier Area) when he was lucid. He allowed anyone anywhere as long as they had $$ and/or drugs for him. It just became obvious that something was up to the ones who clubbed in those places often, the whole energy of the club off without its organizer and real superstar. Then everyone started hearing rumors about his drug use and addiction. The cats was just one nugget of info that clued everyone in as to how low he had sunk as he treated them like children when he was well and loved to talk about them like a proud Papa. I started to grow up and had to focus on studies by the time Angel was murdered, so I wasn't in the thick of things by then. But, still I'd run into people here and there and they'd inform me about just how bad things had gotten. I guess many people had read the writing on the wall so to speak before the murder, and moved on to other clubs that offered more entertainment and less of a creepy fog hanging over the festivities (not to mention undercover DEA agents looking for drugs). Now i feel really..OLD LOL!
