And that’s how the snow ball rolls down hill lol. From budget build to full send. I’m the same way though if I’m replacing this I might as well replace that and that and that haha.

I don't know the mileage or compression on this engine but that is cosmetic damage on the tops of those pistons. Nothing gained if you aren't replacing for bore wear, oil consumption, or compression problems. 6.0 heads always have detectable cracks. They form shortly after they leave the factory. They have induction hardened seats and the difference in the tension between the hardened and unhardened metal causes cracks. Rare to find a crack that is actually a problem because the decks on the heads are so thick they can handle them with no problem. OEM heads are better metal than the Chinese castings everyone sells, and there is no risk of dropping a seat in an OEM head. Unless you ran sand through your engine or change your oil every 10000 miles there won't be any wear on the piston bores worth looking at. These blocks will easily go 500K miles before they have addressable wear if you just put plain old T4 shell 15-40 in them every 5000 miles. One thing I would have suggested if I saw this video sooner. Change out the camshaft. It is the one thing that will hold back the engine if you do not replace it. You can bolt everything in the world to these engines and try every tune you can find but it will always be limited and no money will overcome the limitation until you change out the camshaft. The stock camshaft is made with emissions in mind and that means Ford wanted to burn everything they could inside the cylinder and did so by reducing duration and overlap. These are turbocharged engines and they will LOVE cam overlap and higher duration lobes. The result of the aftermarket cams is they pack the air in on an intake stroke and they continue to burn the fuel as it is exiting on the exhaust stroke. This will boost your turbo performance and torque even if you keep the stock turbo and give you gains on bigger airflow equipment if you install it later. Camshaft is the first part installed on the block and if you skip doing one now you'll be taking the entire engine apart later if you want one.

I appreciate the info sir, I will have another video out shortly since I discovered some more problematic things in this engine, including the cam shaft.

Dang thats pretty crazy! But the good thing is that once you replace them they'll be good to go and you wont have to worry about it anymore

Yup, that's how I'm looking at it!

If you dont mind me asking what harborfreight engine stand did you use and did you custom fabricate anything to adapt it to the harbor freight stand?

Definitely got lucky that whatever went through their didn’t take a valve with it. That’s pretty wild. Excited for the test down man!

I'd replace the intercooler cause all that metal had to go thru it and there could still be pieces in it waiting to let loose on your shiny new pistons
@drewsgarage15583 жыл бұрын
I replaced the intercooler when it happened, which was like 2 years ago...

Did you use the bell housing bolts to hold the engine on the stand or something else?
@drewsgarage15583 жыл бұрын
Yes but I had to buy longer bolts for the stand

I'm a cheap bastard, personally id just hit them with a lil grit till any sharp edges are gone, if your goin new pistons most likely shop will say cylinders need bored and im not 100 percent usually they gotta go .020 over to clean up nice plus i think .020 pistons are cheaper and easiest to find
@drewsgarage15583 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I’d rather just do it right and be done with it. I think I’m going to tear it down to bare block and get it bored over, new pistons, cam, and all the other goodies.

I just finished my build and about to drop it in my truck. If you are doing the rebuild yourself and have any questions shoot me a message if I can help. Looks like you have the metal clip 03 style rockers. That's a plus. Don't loose any of those clips, they are hard to come by.
