6.0 powerstroke rod knocking!! Catastrophic engine failure

170,000 miles never tuned fully bulletproof 6.0 threw a rod @ idle 😅

When I heard it rev up the first thing that came to mind was valve train problem with stuck injectors, rod knock sounds different. That sucks

Sometimes on the 6.0 if you don't catch the top end issues fast enough the bottom end ain't long for this world.

I had a bearing failure on a 80k mile engine all because the stand in the middle of the oil filter was melted when I pulled the motor out a parts truck and I didn’t think much of it I was surprised it lasted a few months almost 5k miles with the molten plastic in the engine 😭

My 6.0 acted similar on cold start up. Really rough and no power. But after replacing all 8 injectors it purrs now. I replaced IPR and ICP first but it didn’t help much so I spent the money and got all 8 replaced plus new stand pipe and dummy plugs. Mine had zero blow by also and have almost 200k miles.

Mine turned out to be a bolt that fell in intake somehow, bent a valve and caused piston to valve contact

Must've caught some 2nd hand engine problems from those 6.4 rims🤣 that really sucks man.. you said it never left the driveway with the new hpop and started knocking? That's so odd.. any chance something got dropped in it while everything was off the top? Lifter fail? something cause a bent pushrod? I'm just trying to come up with something else that may be possible. 6.0s are very rare to have bottom end issues unless it's really pushing some high numbers. I'm in denial and it's not even my truck haha man hope it's at least buildable. Do you know for sure what it is by now?

Valve turned out to be hitting piston with a bolt lodged in there too😂 I put the 6.4 rims on after it blew up so I could use the nicer wheels that were normally on it on my 7.3 so it looked cooler while I was daily driving it

Sounds like a Lifter failure...... the bottem end on these engines are really strong even if assembled poorly.... i've lost a lifter before whole motor gone through and BUSHED caged lifters installed. got the metal tie on them... won't ever have a Lifter issue agian and hopefully wont ever have a Pushrod issue with Shorter Chromoly pushrods and Stronger valve springs Trucks making 700 hp 1400 ft lbs of tourqe at the rear wheels.... the only real challenge it has now is maintaining the high pressure oil system

You should put adrenaline stage 2 hpop in your motor. I just picked mine up from machine shop, I'm building mine as complete stage 2 motor

Awww come on nick….. idi’s have plenty of places for you to drop a bolt into the engine. Jp. I actually did the same thing to my first car (5.0 mustang) started knocking 20 seconds after new engine first startup. What’s your 7.3 psd like? And why did you buy a 6.0 if you already had a 7.3?

Always, always tape intake ports when working on motors; too easy to drop bolts in and jam intake valves open. That's an expensive lesson, indeed.

Honestly it sounds like a Loose Rocker Arm and possibly Bend Rod Thats pretty easy to Fix thsts top End You dont need a New Motor

Also did you purge the air out of the HPOP before attempting to start? Cycling for 30 sec, wait 5 minutes and repeat. Should do that at least 3 times before trying to fire the engine after any HPOP replacement.

I purged it like 4x, primed fuel system by cycling key 5x and cranked like 5x before it start

Constant white smoke could mean that it will start to try to feed it's own oil, because, diesel engines are built different. They don't blow a rod, but they do rev up on their own and eventually seize.

Thats the infamous lifter thud! But still makin base oil pressure so chances are its the rocker assembly or dropped a valve put a dollar up to the exaust and look for suck back. May get lucky with a new pushrod and couple rockers ''like my old 6.4 twice'' or worst case gotta replace the head.

I figured how bad can it be.Back then I didnt know jack shit about diesels let alone 6.0s. Finally after months of chasing my tail pulled head valve Last guy lost a inj tip and replaced it but looked like someone took a cutting torch to that valve Every mech said new motor. So I did a budget fix to sell it. Piston was lil scuffed but i just used lil sand paper. Popped in new valve lapped it a lil and with a lil copper spray I reused hesdgasket and tty's. Big beating the shit outta her with hot tunes ever since. lol

It was a valve hitting the piston, replaced the one piston and had a machine shop do a full valve job on my head and called it a day

Bolt was pushing a intake valve into the piston head, took engine out of truck and had to get a new piston and had machine shop do a valve job
