Man, all the .260 and .243 comments are here are really sad. Yes, we know your grandpas .264 mag shoots faster than these. That’s not the point. The point in the cm vs .260 is a slightly shorter case allowing you to load the modern, long, high BC bullets that are more efficient down range. Same for the 6mm vs .243. If all you do is hunt deer inside 300-400 yards then you’re right, keep your .270. That’s not what these were designed to do. They happen to kill animals quite with good bullet selection and shot placement, all while having low recoil and being inherently accurate, but they were designed originally for long range target shooting. How many competitions has the .270 won? We all know there’s a million different cartridges that will kill deer and elk, hating on something new when you don’t actually understand what it was designed to do is pretty ridiculous.

It's horses for courses. You could go back to the 6mm ppc or its older brother the 22 ppc for the advent of shorter, fatter cases that were inherently accurate You could look at the 6.5-284 as a short fat cartridge and the Tompkins family pretty well established its abilities at Camp Perry. You could also put a fast twist barrel on a 243 and shoot ELD bullets in one and it might be close to the 6mm cm. The 6mm's are starting to take a larger percentage of wins in the long range arena, unless it gets windy. Nosler is reinventing a belt less Weatherby and hunters are embracing them. The 260 Rem has its fans just as the 338 Lapua does. Yes the Creedmores are effective to 1,000 yards and a bit beyond but using them on game beyond 600 yards gets a bit problematic as far as ethical hunting goes. Yes it can be done and there are those who have the skill and tools to do it but that doesn't mean we all should try it. So, you do your homework and make your choice. Hell you might get a 1" in 8" barrel in 6mm Remington and shoot the 100 grain plus elds right alongside all the other 6's and 6.5's or take a big step to the 416's and 378's and targets at miles not yards. Read the seminal books of Bryan Liz and plot your own course. The only thing we pretty much know for sure is that shooting sports as we know it today might look a whole lot different 10 years down the road.

@@scottmcwhinney5727 You're absolutely right. The CM's are far from what would be my first choice to shoot deer / elk at over 4-5-600 yards. I was simply saying the amount of people who hate on the CM's is funny. For hunting purposes it's far from anything special, but it's not BAD inside typical hunting ranges. My point was simply that there's no logic behind a lot of the nonsense comments people make about it. It has pros and cons just like anything else. It's not the cartridges fault people don't use it properly

@@BadoreksDailys No argument from me, its all horses for courses and most have their places in the great spectrum of cartridges out there. We all have our favorites and when a manufacturer gets behind a cartridge they designed you can expect a bunch of hoopla. Takes awhile before the negatives or limitations appear. In the interim lots will jump behind the latest and greatest. Thanks.
@BadoreksDailys

@@scottmcwhinney5727 You are absolutely correct. There are horses for each course. Some horses overlap, and some don't. I completely understand both sides. Is the 6.5 creed a 1500 yard elk slayer? No. Is the 6.5 creed more than capable of killing a mule deer at 300 yards? Yes. I've always believed that the number one most important thing is shot placement, followed by bullet selection. Of course, there is a wide range of bullets that will do the job. However, I would rather see an elk hit in the vitals with a 100 grain partitions out of a .243 at 200 yards than an elk hit in the guts at 500 yards with a .300 RUM. At the same time, I'd rather see an elk hit well in the vitals with a 300 RUM than hit well with a .243. You know what I'm saying. I'venever bought into this whole discussion, at the end of the day know YOUR rifle, YOUR limitations, YOUR cartridges limitations, and put well designed bullets where they need to go. At the end of the day, we all have the same goal in mind, ethically harvest an animal. Best of luck to you! Hope you had a Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays. Happy Hunting!

@markgrant3653 yes, you can. However your gun is not manufactured to the same tolerances as modern cartridges. Like I said, for most folks hunting there’s nothing special about these cartridges. However, acting like they don’t excel at what they were designed to do is silly. Pretending there’s not advantages to a modern cartridge from a loading / long range target shooting perspective is also silly.

All these new cartridges in 6.5 do not measure up to the original American 6.5....the .256 Newton. That cartridge has been around since the 1920’s. I have an original Charles Newton rifle chambered for this cartridge along with a number of custom rifles I have build myself. The brass was once produced by Jamison International a few years ago and I bought 2000 just in case. The .256 Newton performs just as Charles Newton designed it! It is good for all American game animals as well as long range targets out to 1200 to 1300 meters. Charles Newton knew what he was doing long before many others were even born. If I had to give up all my rifles but one I would keep my .256 Newton!

You should have done the 7mm PRC. There is the point of diminishing returns with 6,5mm Magnum. Bigger Case, more barrel burning etc. for just about 200fps more. Very specific cartridge. A 7mm PRC would also be mor suitable for LR Hunting. Nobody wants a barrel of 26"+ these days. Max. should be 24" for LR Hunting. Greetings from a german weapon engineer.

6.5 CM is just a short-action 6.5x55mm. I know there are some minor differences and you can load heavier bullets in the long-action cartridge, but for most people's shooting they're ballistically identical, like 7mm-08 and 7x57mm. 7mm-08 and 6.5 CM will stick around for the same reasons that the older, long-action cartridges will. Because they do what they do, but in a shorter, lighter, handier rifle. Most modern rifles are built first for the shorter action, and having a .308 Win parent case means far greater availability and compatibility with more rifles than 6.5x55 or 7x57. These cartridges do the same thing, but they're available in the common shorter actions of today. That's no gimmick. 6.5 PRC might not last, it's a shorter 6.5-284, a less popular cartridge to begin with (though greatly respected for it's capabilities). But 6.5 PRC like 6.5 CM has some real advantages and it has better external ballistics than anything with less recoil, and is only significantly surpassed by cartridges with much more recoil. 6.5 PRC is a light magnum cartridge, if I recall correctly it has the recoil energy of a heavy .30-06. In other words, it's the perfect long-range cartridge for many people. That's about the limit of recoil for many people before it becomes unpleasant. Good power for hunting or very long range shooting. 6mm CM might not last, but if you want to shoot a 6mm cartridge out of a box magazine at long range with factory it's the obvious choice. It fits the heavier 6mm bullets within magazine OAL limits better than the .243 Win, and unlike all it's other rivals factory ammo is available. It's not that 6mm CM performs any better than 6mm Dasher. Velocity is a little higher in the CM, but the Dasher is slightly more efficient and gets you probably the best recoil for external ballistics deal there is. But Dasher and the other 6mm .308 Win parent case cartridges seen in competition are all handloader cartridges, except the CM and .243 Win (though you'll probably have to handload heavy bullets for .243 Win and may need an usual twist rate). 6 CM is an effective and very competitive turnkey solution. But if we're talking 6mm ARs, these low-power .308 Win parent case 6mm cartridges almost overlap with the most powerful AR-15 6mm cartridges, like the 6mmAR variants (which are essentially 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm, including also the 6mm FatRat and 6mm Grinch). So if it's an AR, it may make sense to sacrifice 200fps and get the snaller-frame AR-15 rather than a bigger, heavier, more expensive, and likely less reliable gun designed for .308 Win.

Paelorian you seem to be pretty familiar with the differences between these rounds. Something I am wondering (and on which I haven’t found any real comparative info) is the differences between 6.5 PRC and 6.5-284, especially ballistically. I know the PRC was made so it could fit in a short action, but that’s about it. Would you be able to give me a very brief explanation of the differences? I am mainly interested in one or the other for long range hunting and shooting. Thank you!

It seems to me that a lot of the long range bench rest interest brought about the 6.5-284, and the others “came tumbling after” like Jane. I have loaded a lot of Hornsby bullets into cases over the past 50+ years, but I do believe that this is a factory sponsored ad campaign. Other than a few cursory case dimensions, there is no real information to be gleaned from this presentation. As these large capacity cartridges are developed, it would be a good thing to extend the barrel length to 26” or even 28” to allow setting the barrels back as the throat is eroded, while allowing more of the powder time to burn inside the bore.

Hornady, you need to make an equivalent of a Sierra Match King, Berger VLD, or a Lock Base for a 160-165 grain .264" bullet for loading in a .264 Win Mag. My estimate is that a 160 grain, low drag, .264" projectile would have a BC of ~0.850 if fired at a velocity of 2,900 fps. The projectile would still be supersonic at 2,000 yards and has similar drop to a 750 grain .50 BMG A-Max. This would be huge and you guys would pretty much own the market for the heavier, long-range 6.5 bullets.

NRAdude already 155's out there for your bigger .264 guns, 26 nosler, 6.5x284, and 6.5-300 weatherby. The problem with these in the 264 win mag, which I own a sako, twists rates are almost always 1-9 for the lighter bullets. Unless it's a custom 264 win by then it's a 1-9 which sucks for all the vld's. So hornady doenst really need to, it's already done....
@stephenesauk

It is amazing to me how no one wants to compare the 264 Win Mag to any of the "new" cartridges, maybe because it is so much better the only things faster are the Weatherby 6.5-300 and the 26 Nosler but they burn a lot more powder. The barrel burn is not nearly as bad as people say especially if you take into account the better barrel components we have now days.
@hornady
@hornady 6 жыл бұрын
It could be compared, but factory barreled 264 Win Mag's are chambered in 1 in 9" twist barrels, making it hard to stabilize the high BC long bullets that the new cartridges can stabilize accurately.

The reason (6.5 Creedmoor) it's been "on fire" is people on every TV gun show/outdoors/sportsman channel wont stop promoting it and trying to sell it. You see here they did not even mention the .260 Rem, or the 6.5 Swedish Mauser which is all the rest of them's BABY DADDY :)
@dsan94
@dsan94 Жыл бұрын
6.5 cartridge development predates the Swedish mauser. They also weren't the only nation of that era to adopt 6.5 cartridges for the military. While I love 6-7mm military cartridges, they don't come anywhere near the performance of 6.5 creedmoor. It is an excellent cartridge, shorter, lighter action, incredible performance (if you deny this I doubt you have shot past 600 yds much if at all and certainly not in the 1200-1400yd range), standard bolt face, etc. The cartridge is convenient, available, efficient, and with excellent performance to boot. Plenty of great cartridges out there but 6.5 creedmoor should surpass 308 as the go-to standard, full-power rifle cartridge in America if it hasn't already.

Are the 6.5 PRC factory rifles using Hornady factory ammo generally more accurate than say factory 7mm rem mag rifles shooting Hornady factory ammo (162g ELDX)? The 6.5PRC has equal or better trajectory out to 1000 yds than the 7mm rem mag but with less energy. I am wanting to hunt long range deer and elk beyond 500yds but my factory 7mm mag struggles to stay under MOA (1.25-1.5) at 100. Therefore accuracy becomes the limiting factor beyond 500 with the 7mm mag, considering upgrading to the 6.5PRC or possibly the 7 PRC.

The saami spec 243 has a 1:10 twist barrel. That means it's better with bullets from 75-90gr. The 6CM has a 1:8 twist, so it shoots a much longer more aerodynamic bullet. 103eldx -108eld bullets. They're far less effected by wind and lose speed at a much slower rate. I'd say the 243 shoots varmint rounds better though. The 264 Win Mag is a pretty good cartridge, but saami spec gives it a 1:9 twist barrel. It holds a lot more powder than the PRC, but can't shoot the heavier more aerodynamic bullets as well. A modern 264 Win Mag would have a 1:8 twist barrel, and a longer throat. Then you could load it with 147gr bullets and have a longer range hunting cartridge. I like cars made in the 30's to 70's, but the fact is, they produced less power and got a lot worse mpg. It's kind of the same with guns. If your deer are less then 150 yards away, then the tried and true 30-30 will be great. If you're hunting pronghorn in Wyoming, then you need all the help you can get to reach out there and battle the wind. Now days they have chronographs and computers and cnc machines to improve cartridges,

Because there aren't a very large selection of bullets in 277 cal. If you hunt out west where the wind blows 20+ mph, and you need to shoot at longer ranges, a more aerodynamic bullet will make a big difference. The 6.5mm/264 cal has a far more aerodynamic bullet selection. Many people shoot a 270 with 130gr bullets. Mostly under 400 BC. A 130gr bullet in 6.5 is well over 500BC. A 143gr bullet in 6.5 has a 625 BC. That means that the 270 bullet at 300 yards in a 20mph cross wind will blow over twice as far off target as the 6.5 bullet. Bullet selection for the 270 has improved in the last 5 years. You can now get 140-145gr bullets with about a 500BC. Wind is the biggest problem for shooting past 200 yards. If you're pronghorn is 400 yards away and no way to get closer...6.5 really increases your chances.

It’s the same as the .260 vs 6.5 cm. The main different is the 6mm cm case allows you more room for longer bullets, allowing you to shoot long, heavy, more ballistic efficient bullets. If you’re shooting federal fusions or Remington core lokts, then they’re about the same. The cm case is just slightly shorter allowing you to shoot the longer bullets while still being the same overall length.

I’m not saying that the 6.5 PRC ain’t a good round , I have a 6.5 Creedmoore and love it but the 264 Beats it in the long run due to higher velocity and more energy energy , the difference is right around 250 foot pounds of energy difference between the 264 and 6.5 Creedmore. I my opinion the 6.5 creedmore and derivative cartridges are excellent...as long as you have an rifle with a high quality barrel (cold hammer forge of 4140 derivates steel is not good enough for super fast bullets), more important than the caliber cartridge is the quality of the rifle. Styer, Mauser, husqvarna, tikka...

"more important than the caliber cartridge is the quality of the rifle?" I have a friend who took 2nd place with a Ruger American with a Burris scope in 6.5 CM at 1,900 meters on his second shot while the other nine out of ten shooters were shooting 3,000.00$ rifles and scopes. My reply to my buddy was, " those other nine shooters probably ran down to the sptg. dealer and ordered Ruger American's in 6.5 CM. Anyway, it is what you get used to and how often it is used, like on hammer feels better than all others.

Didn’t the Swedes figure this out in 1896?dont like metric go .260 Rem neck down .308 case simple. Lots of cheap brass,done. Just like the lures are to catch the fishermen all these new calibers just keep us buying stuff we don’t need. I started with a K96 Mauser when I was a kid. Gone full circle with a safe full of rifles and calibers right back to 6.5 is the going fad. What’s next? Creed more ultra mag AI?Got to have it!

Scott Buckley. Right on! Well there you go! Have you compared it yet along side a .270 Winchester model 70. We shoot and maintain the old rifles here. Some get bold and buy the fancy new calibre rifles. Usually the guys that use cocaine and have too much time, money and tattoos on their ass. To me, that creedomore rifle is same concept as .308 design. Shorter cartridge with explosive powder. Worked good for the .308 because of heavier grain and larger bore. See no real advantage to .270 except the marketing. Grandpa bought .308 way back when they first come out. Lever action, magazine hehe! What a combination! Think he wanted to upgrade his trusty 303 British. Was a thin barrel and probably shot full metal jacket during training and wore the barrel out somewhat.

The parent cartridge for the Creedmore line is the 308 Win and your cartridges are very close to existing cartridges, the 243 Win, 260 Rem. and 6.5-284 Norma. The 6.5 PRC is pretty close to a beltless 264 Rem Mag. I appreciate the Hornady development of these lines and the ballistically superior bullets now available. the 6.5mm rounds have all benefited from the inherent ballistic superiorty of the 6.5, ask Lee Harvey Oswald about that.

When is someone going to neck down 300 blk to 6.5 mm ? Don't say 6.5 grendel or 6.5mm whisper because those brass cases aren't based off 223/556 brass like the 300 blk which makes 300 blk more appealing to reloaders because 223/556 is easy to find for free and simple to convert into 300 blk brass. All that needs to be done is for someone to neck down 300 blk to 6.5mm. It could be called 6.5 blackout or 260 blackout.
