I bought one of these from Harbor Freight, about the same time. Harbor Freight doesn't carry it anymore, but I really like mine! I bought it for the same reason, I wanted a heavy duty drill press, and an occasional mill.

I bought mine off Harbor Freight in the early 90s. It was a scratch and dent model so I got it for $800. They said it had a little rust but the real problem was the starter contacts in the motor were jacked up. So it wouldn't start. I fixed that. Just had to align them a bit with a pair of pliers.

I try to stick to old American made machines when possible but I’ve had a number of Chinese ones that worked very well, except for the “black bull” drill press that the table broke off and I had to weld it back together... As far as Shars tooling, I have some and love it. Really good stuff. Thanks for putting videos up again, I actually did miss you when you left KZbin.

You helped make my mind re:column it has the power, but can't hold set. That's all I really needed to know about a round column vertical mill, what a design flaw. 😮

My dad had one and it was great. He made a gear cutting indexer for it. My brother got it when dad died and it disappeared.

I bought the original, Taiwanese Jet-16 version of this mill this summer for $1500. Got an X-Y DRO & a small LCD Z DRO & a vise w/ it. The 1st thing I did was get an ER32 - R8 collet chuck because I have an ER32 on my small lathe & my work horse drill press, (1.5 hp industrial, gear drive motor runs at ~115 RPM & torque 'to infinity AND beyond). Battling the prob w/ it being a move the head, not the knee mill, I anchored the vertical gear to the post & if I screw up on height setup, I can move the head on non critical precision milling w/o a problem. Motorizing the Z w/ an old Milwaukie Hole Shooter drill motor helped, too. Got an effed up neck & upper back; hand cranking the mill head is no bueno. There IS a lot of machine tool snobbery, esp on the Internet. I would loved to have bought a Bridgeport or several of the other mills available at the time I bought this, but I just don't have the room. I don't need to make 'big chips', I'm not trying to maximize $/hr; I just need to mill things more quickly than my previous method(s) of some combination of router table/table saw/beam saw/drill press/files/torch/die grinder. The 2 belt drive is just screaming for it to be upgraded w/ a scavenged treadmill motor, not for more torque, but for the var speed of the DC motor. Treadmill motors are great, 2.0-3.5 hp & typically free. Find the right brand & the motor & power supply/controller are mounted on a steel rack; unbolt, mount it & plug it in. BUT, DC motors have no low RPM torque, that's why the 2 belt drive is perfect for them. Run the motor as fast as you can, then belt drive it down to the RPM range needed. I have 1 on my lathe, using a car alternator as the 'jack shaft', intermediate pulley & it's superb. Use the treadmill dash board & OEM power supply; it has auto-load compensation, (only big $ lathes have it), a magnetic kill switch, (have an emer? Swipe your hand at the dashboard & knock the mag off) & a circuit breaker On-Off switch, overload the motor & it trips it off. Overload the typical motor controller & it blows a fuse if you're lucky, kills the controller most of the time. Overall, I think a round column can be a fine solution if you don't need to max $/hr of income. It'll do everything you need a mill to do. Besides, the real cost is accessories & tooling; everyhting a guy builds or buys for an inexpensive round column, (starter) mill WILL work on a Bridgeport. Hell, I have been buying tooling & accessories for 5 yrs, when I ran across killer deals, as prep for buying a mill. Would have bought the mill 4 yrs ago, if not for cancer getting in the way; the effing nerve of it! LOL GeoD

This is what I wanted to mention as well. My Jet-16 is an older one made in Japan. It locks down well. The only times it has swung on me is when I forgot to tighten the head after moving it. That isn't the machine's fault. With all of its shortcomings it has been a very good, reliable piece of equipment and beats the snot out of not having a mill. I knew it wasn't a "real mill" when I bought it because I had already owned a Taiwanese clone of a Bridgeport but it filled the gap for a while. I later bought an American Wells-Index full sized mill because I needed the vertical adjustment without losing the reference point.

Lance, do you think you're going to add something like a Bridgeport to the shop? I know you're a little bit limited on expansion at the current property.

It's a great drill press, that's how most drill presses should be made. As far as a mill it's just a gimmick for newbies thinking they bought a milling machine and will be making precision parts.

I've been eyeballing these. I honestly don't see why they couldn't do a decent job on light aluminum and brass and very light mild steel work.

No angle adjustment. The base to column joint can be shimmed for tramming if necessary but there is no tilting mechanism.

They are all made in China. Atheist this model is made In an ISO factory. Don't know why everyone is talking shit. Bridgeport isn't a company anymore, southbend are now made in China, so is , precision Matthew's, jet, etc. Its just where they are made now. If you want to take a gamble on a beat up Bridgeport that was in a factory for 50 or 60yrs getting reached out for parts when someone needed a part for theirs at home. Good luck with that. I have a friend with this machine and it's actually a solid quality built mill especially for the price. People online like to run their mouths constantly but they only seem to do that in privacy behind their phones in fear of having their glass jaws shattered

I never liked the depth stop on mine. So I made a stop for it that's a lot faster to adjust. Now I actually use it. But it isn't perfect. It's just faster to use. It looks like this i.imgur.com/sC7yQ9h.jpg It's not hard to make. Anyone with one of these mills should be able to make it. You have to file the corners of the threads away to get it to work right. If you make it you'll see what I mean. Drill and tap two blocks don't try to saw it in half.
