The old timers loved this type of bullet -- and you can see why. They might not have the pizazz of more modern bullets but they very dependably get the job done!

Couldnt find any hornady bullets, but I managed to find a box of norma 6.5 carcano, loaded with their 156gr RNSP “alaska” bullet. I took two deer with it and am VERY impressed. Broke at least one front leg ball joint on both deer, and it left 1/2”-5/8” holes on both sides of the ribcage. Not bad considering that carcano carbine was spitting those heavy slugs at about 2,200 at the muzzle.

carcano is larger diameter then 6.5 creedmoor. Should not be fired in a CM. But alaska is the go-to bullet for 6.5 rifles in sweden, 6.5x55 mainly. Hornady 160 is a great bullet to.

Knew a guy that carried a Swedish cavalry carbine in 6.5x55 as his elk rifle. Hunted off a horse. Saddle gun. This was his favorite bullet for elk. He however said that they were so tough that they were ineffective on broadside shots on mule deer. Not enough deer to get them to expand. The deer behaved as if hit by FMJ. Again, this was the mild speeds out of a stubby cavalry carbine in 6.5x55.He used the lighter spire point bullets on deer.

@@samuelpope7798 I really like the looks of little carbines. I also love the way they carry; like big 6 shooters in some cases. But I've yet to find a 150 yard 6 gun. Most hunting ends somewhere short of 150 yards about anywhere. Even in the aspens and cedar breaks it is often real close. I like to be able to take a 200 yard shot if needed, but for where I have stomped around over the years, they are rare.

GOOD POINT!!! As proven in Washington State, on deer hunts . Gun mag articles brain washed my friends into buying Magnums, when the 308 cal did just fine. Magnums, 8mm mag 300 win mag, 338 mag, just blew through deer. You need a certain amount of body weight resistant , for the bullet to preform well. Your Spot on! Hope your still hunting and doing well these days!

It may be possible, but that is an awfully long bullet to be trying to shove in that short of a case. You're really limited on how much powder you can put in there. I don't think that I would try, although one may be able to get it done.

Interesting. There's a lot of folks in Europe who used various 6.5's with a 160gr roundnose and even Africa with good results. You hear of Swedish hunters praising the 6.5 on moose. In North America its the 30-06 and the 220gr roundnose. I recently picked up some hornady 220 for my 30-06. I can't see why I would need another bullet to take game out to 300 yds. Affordable and they e been working for a long time.

Round nose Core-Lokt bullets always had a good track record. Hornady Interlock is as good or likely better. Other brands worked well too. I don't get why, when distances are so short in so much hunting that round nose bullets aren't holding 50% or more of the market.

Marketing and new school train of thought. Hornaday has a really good marketing team that is pushing things like the new PRC lineup and high BC bullets as well as this push in America away from hunting and into long range shooting of animals. I hear a lot of talk amongst "hunters" about needing high BC bullets with high velocity so one has over 1500 foot pounds past 1k yards. I don't fully understand why there is such a big push away from hunting and into "sport" shooting of game animals. Never mind the fact that if you have the opportunity to take a closer range shot your going to blow up a lot of meat with really high velocity impacts. A marksman can hit their target well beyond 500 yards, a hunter should never need to. (Keyword need. I still do sometimes but I'm honest enough to admit it's not really hunting and more just spot and kill) 300 yards and closer round nose bullet are coefficient enough to not have to worry about drop and drift like one needs to for longer ranges as well as being a better option for brushy country. I too am saprised that more hunters mostly in the eastern US don't choose to use round nose bullets.

@@simplemindedfella I've hunted Colorado and the longest shot I ever took was maybe 175 yards. That seemed like an odd fluke. The rest were sub 100 yards. Iron sights and blunt bullets were more than adequate and used in some of those cases. Woods are woods, and deer are deer no matter where you find them. Long range is more fantasy than fact in my personal experience.

I've done most of my hunting in open sagebrush country in Wyoming. The closest I have been to a mule deer buck I put a stock on during archery season in that country was 7 yards. Better majority of my rifle shots are within 200 yards and I have harvest a decent bull elk at 598 yards, whitetails out to 600 and one mule deer at 800, none of which I couldn't have easily if I wasn't being lazy have cut the distance at least in half. And there is always more bragging rights in being a good hunter and cutting the distance then being able to place a shot at distance and not half to really hunt. I have no problems with people harvesting game at extended ranges as long as they have the equipment, skill, and knowledge nessary to take a good clean kill shot on the first shot and recover the animal in a timely fashion. (I understand accidents happen and we all place bad shots at times but the further out you go the more room for error the less ethical the shot is in general) I've shot elk that didn't even react to getting shot until they tipped over with a 300 and 338 Win Mags using good bullets 210gr ABLR in the 300 and 225gr TTSX in the 338 all shot within 400 yards. How can anyone with confidence especially if you don't have a spotter take that long range of a shot and know a critter could walk up over a hill or down into a draw or possibly dropped but that wasn't seen do to recoil not ever giving clear reaction to having been shot and the animals don't get recovered there is definitely a lack of ethics within a lot of the people shooting extreme long range they do not go and check and make sure because they don't want to walk the distance they just assume they must have missed because the didn't see a reaction from the critter or see it go down, that kind of c*** happens a lot and pisses me off. A buddy of mine's father-in-law one year had shot at an elk swore he missed I wasn't there when he did that but was planning on hunting the same area the next few days and ended up finding his elk of course too late it had started to spoil and predators had it chewed up but indeed it was the 1 he shot at and swore he missed.

*Round nose were the shape of choice in the early days of magazine fed cartridge rifles. 6.5x55 SE used a very similar shape 156 grains bullet... Good enough for war and more importantly Bear and Moose. Your Creedmoor is a similar power cartridge to the nearly forgotten 6.5x55 SE Swedish Mauser. 2200 to 2400 fps at 20 feet should be enough to bag your animals out to 300 meters. Beyond 300m your bullets may behave like full metal jacket and use remaining energy to penetrate fur, bone and tissue without expansion. You probably have done some practice. Now, go bag a beast and bring it home for the dinner.*

The 160 Hornady may be quite well at 2500 fps or better.
