I agree! And I also want to emphasize the versatility of the design. While a lot of my other favorites had a Japanese theme (due to the matcha green tea tablets) this may make it difficult to expand and sell other teas from other countries. With this design it would be really easy and cool to have different people drawn in that same style in different colors for the other teas!

They all give off different brand identities to me Natalie's feels high-end that i would find in a department store Matt's feels like an long-established tea farm/maker Georgia's feels like a company that sells various items and this is their tea line Alice's feels like a health & wellness brand with a notable influencer/sponsor Deborah's feels like it would be in a collectors set (like bright cellars but tea) Pedro's feels like a specialty chain like a david's tea Personally I would go for Matt's for Pedro's if I were to see it in person~

Love 1, 2, and 5, but if I was to choose a favorite, it has to be 1. Personally I think the first one achieved the relaxing concept all three of the designs are aiming for without having to rely on it being coveyed through a landscape/scenery. The choice of color to match with the flavor of the tea (in which case was matcha) could be expanded further too with the inclusion of various flavors - we can use blue and a different illustration in the same style for butterfly pea tea for example. This way we could have an array of different colors and illustrations for various flavors while keeping the packaging and brand theme the same throughout (its easier to identify a brand with a character illustration than a scenic landscape).

Natalies design was so unique and different, something I wouldn't have even thought about, which definitely grabbed my attention!! Think all of the entries nailed the brief in their own way, and it's great to see how each designer interprets it too! Thanks so much for your feedback!!

I like hearing your critiques, Abi. It shows your high-level eye for design, and it's always constructive too. You definitely bring a unique quality to the design education space on KZbin, where unlike many others who talk about 'good' design but don't actually present a lot of it in their own work, you really highlight your strong abi-lity (had to do it) to interpret a brief. I would love to see a video where you shared the process of creating your own merch. As a fellow designer, I feel that designing for ourselves can be the most difficult due to the endless amount of creative possibilities that flood our minds when given free rein. Keep up the great work, it's been nice to see you grow as a content creator since discovering the channel.

I really love Deborah's design. Although I wish that she had chosen more greenish colors (since its all about Matcha and "teal"). The blue makes the soft peachy orange stand out more, due to which Id automatically assume that its rather a peach-flavoured product.

1, 2, and 5 are my favourites. 1. Great use of art deco as an inspiration, especially the lettering. 2. I love the bold use gold and the pop of red. 3. Gorgeous use of gradation with blue going to orange. Clever ideas like the water from the kettle becoming a stream and the rising sun and setting moon. This one would probably look best from all angles. Final thoughts: They all succeed in conveying calm & tranquility. They're so aesthetically pleasing that I'd keep them after the tea was finished and use them as storage containers that I'd keep on display.

Great artwork on show here! Pedro is definitely my fave with georgia as a runner up as these are the only designs in my opinion that would actually be seen on a shop shelf. While the other entries are beautiful and show great artwork, with only a tiny logo on top there is nothing telling the consumer that this is a tea brand and it is not reflective of the layout of its biggest competitors. This is a branding competition and great artwork doesn’t always necessarily mean great brand.
@productividay48412 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! The artwork is definitely beautiful and draws the eye of the consumer however it doesn’t work to base the entirety of a brand on some artwork. For example, if this brand wanted to expand into different flavours of tea, pedros could easily be edited by just changing the colours / shapes while the product would still be recognisable under the brand of teal. However, the artwork based brands would be very difficult to expand as new artwork could be created but how would consumers recognise that the different products are from the same brand with such little attention on the logo / brand assets. If you go into a store and look on the shelves the emphasis of product packaging is placed on a) the logo and b) information on what the product is. It should be clear at first glance what the product is to the consumer. For example, based on how these products are stocked on shelves, Natalies design would likely be stored backwards as the back contains the typical information that is seen on the front of most tea products. Therefore the beautiful artwork would not even be seen by customers and so the selling point of this packaging / brand has been lost and all of the work that Natalie put in would be pointless. Overall I think a lot of these were chosen because of how pretty or aesthetic they are but little attention has gone into the actual branding and hence these packaging designs would not work in a real life scenario.
@jasminehall63682 жыл бұрын
I agree! If this was an artwork competition I get why these designs would be picked but as a branding competition I don’t think these designs should have ranked as high, as the branding is basically non existent. If I quote abi’s recent Instagram post on the secret sauce behind crafting a timeless brand, she states “strategy-led design that is structures around any future business plans”. In terms of the designs chosen, I think most of them lacked the strategy-led design and were instead more artwork-led. Although pretty to look at, this kind of branding does not work in the industry as when “teal” need to bring out new products they will need to rebrand as the packaging is not replicable for their new products. This wastes a lot of money and time and therefore is not great strategy-led branding and I think as a brand designer, a lot more emphasis should have been put on overall branding when judging the best designs.

Matt and Deborah! I feel like I would 100% buy the product if I saw it on a supermarket's shelf even if I am not such a big fan of matcha tea. Nevertheless, amazing work by all designers!

The thing about this design challenge is that you can take the exact same product and depending on which package you put it in, it automatically increases or decreases the value. If I saw Natalie’s and Alice’s designs on the shelf and they were the exact same product inside and both priced at $29.99, I’m choosing Natalie’s. It feels luxurious, it screams art deco and the excess of the 1920s. Alice’s logo design was adorable but the design says $9.99..if that makes sense. Same with Matt’s though, his feels imported and fancy but not overly high-end so I could see his being priced at $19.99. It just goes to show how packaging is such a psychological subject and packaging design alone can add so much value to the product itself.

I love the second ones. I can feel all sorts of emotions and impression when i look at the design be it tranquility, tea ceremony, matcha origin, luxury, sitting at yhe foot of a mountain, tea drinks with friends or family and lastly, the zen. I don't feel these much on other designs tho but all designs are amazing! I agree with you about the birds. Although i don't want it to be removed i prefer if it's a bit bigger and less. By bigger i mean there's a perspective but not too big that it disturb the fonts. It's like the birds are heading to us as if welcoming us into their world. The position seems better to be a bit lower, not in the middle of the sun. Anyway, good job on creating such eye catching design ✨

Would combine: The graphic and green color of Natalie & the placement of information from Georgia with some of the nicer font designs like Matts, Alice or Deborahs. To add the golden brushstroke to it like Matt did could be a nice eye-catcher. If on the other side of the logo a nice quote would be placed, this would definetly be a box to keep and maybe with other designs also to collect. Although I prefer the vibe of Natalie with the complete design Matt did the best job.

The most elegant and sophisticated looking of the designs was the very first by Natalie. However, all six of the designs of the logo text "Teal" could have benefited from a bit more effort. In some instances they were too small on the package (Georgia) and in others too thin (Deborah) making them difficult to notice on a busy shelf or read at a glance. The last package design by Pedro was simply too busy to have a "fresh, elegant" tone.

The fist one feels exquisite and expensive… i think it would entice non-tea drinkers who would want to experience tea-time in a royal household. People may not realize it but the packaging adds a positive experience or even to the taste of the product. Its a form of mental conditioning

First time on this channel, this video was fun to watch! Matt and Deborah's looked the best to me, other than the T in Matt's "Teal" kinda looking like a P...I'd alter the letter on that one. (At first quick glance I thought it said Peal lol.) Otherwise, both Matt and Deborah give an authentic Japanese feel that the others don't, in addition to the quality of the designs giving an elegant feel as well. The third looked like something from Target--it's not hideous, just generic, and it doesn't scream authentic Japanese anything. And the rest either didn't have much to do with Japan or weren't very luxurious/elegant. Customers want authenticity, so the Japanese emphasis is important, at least I think so! If I had to pick, I'd pick Matt's (with the aforementioned letter edit), then Deborah's. But I think you couldn't go wrong with either. Truly beautiful designs.

They're all well done. If I gotta rank 'em it would be: Natalie > Pedro = Deborah > Alice > Matt = Georgia. Constructive opinions in order of appearance would be: 1. Natalie - Spice up the tagline typeface, make the logo more visible (colour and size wise), can even do oversized logo imo. 2. Matt - Less elements, typefaces, and colours definitely, looks messy now, and reorganise the kanji so the character wouldn't be split in half by the lid. 3. Georgia - Needs more colours and add vibrance, a bit of lost focus so enlarge some text, elements are not very cohesive, make it tighter and fill them up. 4. Alice - Looks the most corporate, all safe and nothing wrong, make logo stroke round-ended for gentleness, add an extra colour like yellow and some graphical details would pop it a lot more. 5. Deborah - Very artsy, I wouldn't change much, I understand the idea of thick-thin contrast but logo may need a bit tidy up on the leaf cos it looks unfinished, design overall is not too tea-like. 6. Pedro - Very consistent, slightly playful and in-trend, logo looks a bit under-designed, again an extra pop of colour can bring out the green.

I’m Japanese and i can tell those two are Japan inspired design but also I’m 100% for sure it’s designed by non-Japanese by looking at the design👀

Hey! I was thinking something.. Have you ever thought of redesigning Carmex? Recently, I 've been using Carmex a lot and I thought (as a consumer( that logo and packaging of the lip balm could be better... Then I' ve started practicing and I've tried to come up with some idea by myself and I thought that it would be interesting to see you trying to redesign it... I think that brand could be seen from two POVs and I would love to see your try💛
