6 Great Lithuania-Related Mentions In American Media

After asking the community and scouring KZbin, I found a handful of good mentions of Lithuania in US media - well, 6 in particular (5 and a bonus). There are many more out there, but I think in many of these cases, the mention of the country of Lithuania is used as a way to say “somewhere totally random, obscure, and far away.” I chose to exclude these and just focus on features that have a little more meaning - and a little more Lithuania - contained within!

I've been using the Lithuania scent on myself for quite a while now. They ship pretty fast and they are not expensive as far as perfumes go. I would recommend buying it because it is really just a unique scent and a unique feeling of having the scent of a country

Lithuania was also mentioned in the critically acclaimed and best selling 2001 novel "The Corrections" by Johnathan Franzen, describing Vilnius as having "chronic coal and electricity shortages, freezing drizzle, drive-by shootings and heavy dietary reliance on horsemeat." I spent quite a bit of time in the country between 2000 and 2002 and Lithuania was nothing like how the novel described it. I guess the country was quite unkown at the time for English speakers so they could get away with saying anything

I think it was a mispronunciation of "esti" (is/are). He said "šešėlų", so I'm prone to think it was one of two mistakes. Other than that he did a very good job

I think he said "Kame yra šviesos, ten ir šešėlių esti". "Esti" - old form of "būti" (to be) which makes sense because it was his grandma who said it.

Tom Clancy's book "commander in chief" features Lithuania heavily. It is in fact about a russian invasion of Lithuania, and American attempt to defend it. So a large part of action takes place there with lots of specific locations mentioned. I'm not a fan of Jack Rian series, but I remember liking that one. And can recommend. Although need to remember that this was published in 2015, when perception of russian might was at its peak, needless to say it reads a little different today. You can also find it on audible.

If Linas Phillips is really of Lithuanian origin, then I think his name Linas is Lithuanian Linas and pronounced Linas, not Lainas? Just A guess.

@@ciimy I was thinking that and you are not wrong. Yet įžymus/žymus is more like "notable" or "significant". It is mostly used for historic figures or architecture i think. Currently famous person is more likely to be "garsenybė" (than įžymybė) id say. "Žymė" means mark by the way, but i digress. Just my thoughts.

In HIMYM spoken lithuanian is bad. I understand when Lily says sveikas but all the other lithuanian spoken in that episode is so bad i cant undertand any other words and i am a lithuanian. I honestly think that the so called lithuanian spoken in that episode besides Lilys sveikas is gibberish

Ok. So he said that as he recalls the show provided him what to say already translated into Lithuanian. He said he remembers looking at it and thinking it didn't make much sense so he ran it by his mom (who is native Lithuanian) and she agreed it didn't make much sense. Also, he said he's pretty sure he did the whole thing by phone which is why it sounds so bad.
