I had a wealthy boss once who said money isn’t everything when I was trying to get a modest pay rise for a minimum wage employee who was struggling financially, I told him that only a financially secure person would ever say that, money is seriously important if you’re just scraping by and have medical bills.

Fruity, many people don't have walkable neighborhoods. Even neighborhoods that used to be walkable are becoming unwalkable due to pitbulls and rottweillers. Most people don't have time to go for a walk, if they're like me, they own their own business and are taking care of their parents and also helping an adult child with their business as a part time team member when needed. It's a lot. I'd be to terrified to walk in our neighborhood with the dogs that are in the neighborhood now. I'm so worried that one of them will get out someday and attack children on their walk home from school or an elderly neighbor going to pull the garbage can back to the house.

Things I’ve found that are overrated by age 51: marriage, working 60 weeks to get ahead(when you leave or retire, they forget you lol), long hair, having an expensive car/clothes/house. I could go on but being single the past 15 years and having traveled solo around the world and done my own thing, I’m definitely with the person I’m supposed to be with…me!

I agree about marriage. I’m still with the love of my life (just about to turn 51!) but have been disillusioned probably since having our baby (now 14 yr old boy). It’s like suddenly you understand what all the feminists were talking about! How come I’m responsible for practically everything? Why am I constantly doing laundry and dishwashing? I’m so tired.

The best decision I’ve ever made is to be child free. I never felt the urge to have children so I didn’t, despite the societal pressure. Hubby and I are in our early 40s now so the questions have mostly stopped. We only have one life. Live it the way you want as much as possible.

I've been very happily married and dedicated to my animals and animal welfare. Like you once I reached a certain age questions became less and accusations of being selfish. I love animals and support many but surely my way is my decision and all we need is respect. Just as I value and respect others who decided to have kids. Live and let live to everyone 😊❤

Freedom to sit around doing nothing and not feel guilt, freedom to drive my crap car but have no car payment, freedom to call in just because I want to cuddle with my kids. Freedom to wear no makeup and feel beautiful. Freedom to be a single mother and not live with guilt. Everyday I strive to be free which has given me more fulfillment, not easy but worth it. Why do we need goals in retirement? I had a demanding career in nursing. I missed many many family events, holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving due to my shift work schedule. Work involved emotional and physical demands which took a toll including my marriage. Now that | am finally able to go to bed when I like, cook what I want and wake up when I want why do I need to make even more demands on my time? I wake up and unless I have an appointment or lunch/dinner plans my day is my own to live. I like that.

I haven't achieved any of these goals but I have had a fabulous life. My husband and I decided early on to forego wealth for family. That pretty much nixed all the other life goals you mention. We exchanged a big wedding for getting through college. We gave up a fancy house for a sturdy one that could handle a lot of foster children. We worked jobs that allowed us lots of time with our kids. We never cared for city life, so never lived there, but lived close enough to visit regularly. I'm now a widow with a large extended family. I'm not rich but I'm not poor either. At 80, I feel blessed that I had such a great life and look forward to more adventures in the future.

One theme that emerges from this video is: do what actually fulfills you, not what somebody else tells you will be fulfilling. Nobody - not your family, not your teachers, not some stranger on social media, not society at large - knows the answer for you; you have to find it for yourself. And I would add that it’s extremely liberating to not care about the opinions of other people who are baffled by or critical of your choices.

This is very well put. Being of free and independent mind has always been a joy and a delight in life, but even more so with every day as I age. I am profoundly appreciative of this. Sometimes, parts of this have been sore challenged by (some) others in my life, so I have had to defend my right to be of independent mind, and learn to deal with that not being popular. I have found that those I truly love and who truly love me have stuck by me on this, as I have stuck by them. It is one mark of being a responsible adult . . . and of being human.
@kaasmeester5903

I don’t think it’s wrong to care about the opinions of others… within reason. As long as you don’t let yourself get pressured into trying to be someone you’re not. And you’re right about having to find out for yourself. As a wise man once said: you can be anything you want, you just have to know what that is.

I am a 73 year old woman. I married at 17 ( still married to the same man). Have above average number of children. A bed of roses? Hardly, but it has been probably 90% good. We are square pegs in a world that is mostly round holes. I believe one road to contentment is choosing what you and yours want NOT what “the majority” thinks you should be doing. Trying to fit into someone else’s ideas of what we should be doing is a terrible waste. Life is short. Be kind. Help when you can. Just don’t turn yourself into a pretzel to fit in. I sincerely enjoy your messages. I wish you well.

Good video! Regarding the dream house from a 69 year old single guy, I built mine three years ago. Designed it myself to age in place, 1800 square feet single story ranch. No tub! The shower is 5 feet by 5 feet. Half the house is living space with one bedroom, other half is one car garage and wood working shop. The house I bought in 2017, my forever home, use to belong to a bachelor. Nugget ice maker, outbuildings galore (all with wood wrapped windows), pizza oven and fireplace in the pavilion, an adult treehouse that is better than the Tree Master... with a three bedroom rambler. Things I would not have dreamed of including but SO VERY thankful. It feels like he build the property with ME in mind, yet I never met the man.

Pam here….personally I think the so called ‘life coaches’ have done so much damage to people’s psyches…pushing them to pursue passions, start businesses, leave boring jobs, ect…. This has sent so many down roads of risky, high stress choices, put them in debt and made them Chuck relationships rather than work on the issues in them. So many have wound up broke, struggling and alone.

Years ago, when I was a single mom, I was working for an attorney who was quite impressed with my work. He wanted me to study under him so I could, in two years, take the bar exam and become a member of the firm. It was tempting! It took me just one day to decide, and I came back to him and said, “It would require a lot of time away from my child”. He completely understood and I’m forever grateful.

I agree with your last point about being fit and eating grilled fish. At 61 I bought my first and only house and looked forward to being outside and gardening, doing yard work, building things. However, I have found that I cannot reach and maintain that goal if I don't put eating well and exercising at the top of the list. I don't feel well and I am prone to injury. I began to realize that if I didn't hit my home gym every day and eat grilled fish, whole grains, and fresh veggies I would not be able to take care of the house and do the yard work and gardening, and would be back in an apartment. I love being able to go out and water the plants, tend the vegetable beds and small orchard, weed the flower garden I planted, prune the bushes, and mow the lawn. So my goal is exercise and eat better in order to do that for a lot longer.

💯 I have similar goals with my health and fitness - to be fair though I could be doing more. Injuries gave me a glimpse of what it would be like to lose my independence and I don’t want that, so I’m staying active so that I can do things around my house to keep it maintained. I plan to move into something easier to care for in the next year or two, budgets allowing and planets aligning. Wherever I end up I will go with a smile, the aim is to not end up in any higher level of care than an independent living unit.

The older we get, the more we have to work at staying healthy. Stay active every day, unless you are sick. Keep on eating healthy because it will pay off. I am 68, but find that I have to exercise at home every day: whether cardio, or lifting weights. I also fast power walk every night 3 miles, doing lots of uphills. If I didn’t do this, I would have health problems. However, staying on top of my exercise routine, keeps me in shape, keeps my blood pressure and cholesterol low enough that I don’t need medication - yet.😁It also keeps my mind sharp- for my age- as well as giving me lots of energy to do yard work, wash windows and all the housework. Keep up your exercise and healthy eating! It will pay off. Congratulations on your new house!👍🏻

Strongly disagree with this video's final point! HEALTH is wealth. Most Aging Adults (and all ages for that matter) live a sedentary SAD (Standard American Diet) life -- which woefully compromises their quality of life. Nutrient dense meals, some walking/ moving & some calisthenics/ weight bearing exercise helps strengthen & cushion bones from catastrophic life-ruining falls

Since childhood all I wanted to do is ride horses, teach riding and train horses. My parents said that horses should be my avocation and choose something else that I could fall back on if the horses didn't pan out. So I went into the corporate world as an executive secretary and pursued climbing the corporate ladder. I hated it. The people at the top weren't necessarily brillant or had common sense. There was always someone trying to climb over top of you or pull you down. I finally quit and went into horses fulltime. No, didn't become a millionaire, but my sense of accomplishment was fulfilled. After 28 years of marriage, I quit that too. I was not fulfilled there either. There were good times and bad, but unfulfilling., I prefer to be on my own. I haven't got my dream home yet, but it will come. A single level craftsman style is my choice. Never liked the cities. I'm a country girl. My dream is to have a home, where I can just garden, play with my dogs and do things on my own schedule. I retired from horses after 50 years and now a dog groomer. I have tons of friends and clients, but at the end of the day, I'm alone with my dogs. I'm the happiest right there. I can work as hard and often as I want. If I want to spend a day reading a book, no one interrupts me. Well, except for the dogs... lol... potty breaks and play time.

I inherited a little bit of money from a relative. I live frugally. That allows me to give to charities I feel strongly about (like charity: water), and help people I know who genuinely need the assistance (like paying a deductible for a friend battling cancer). People who spend money on yachts and multimillion dollar apartments leave me scratching my head. If you have more than enough to live comfortably, why not do something useful for those who could benefit from your generosity?

No fuss, no muss and we all had a great time. My husband and I both love to travel, so we wanted to spend the money that would have been spent on a big wedding to go on a trip. You're so lucky! It's all about picking the right partner, and you have to have healthy psychology to do that. My wedding, if you can call it that, it was a civil service, cost nothing, I didn't have a dress and I always regretted that. I'm divorced now, but don't think I'd ever marry again. No dress, no husband, sad. I know where I went wrong now but it's too late to fix it.

The most powerful statement I have ever heard is 'know thyself'. Taken me 60 years to really understand that, and am now embracing. I know I don't like excessive noise, love alone time, am almost always willing to help, hate dying my hair, love good food, reading, family, friends,..........the list is endless. Slightly chagrined to say that my 7 year old self knew most of this...........just got very disracted by what I thought I 'ought' to be.

Design how you want to live, yes oh yes. We are retired & have a handicapped daughter that lives with us. We ordered a walk in tub to be installed as it is her joy and her bathroom. A family member said “The resell of your house will go down with that!” Pardon me… it’s not a House it’s our HOME. Have never regretted the smile on her face with the independence this one simple act has given her. Plan your lives yes for sure but always Live your life. Cheers to many tomorrows 🍻🇨🇦

My marriage has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and it only cost us $50 for JP and we’ve been married 44 years. The other best decision I’ve ever made was becoming a Christian 38 years ago which is why I’m still married today. I think love is most important and being kind to people is something I strive to do because people need that and it’s free. I worked in a nursing home when I was 20 years old and that’s when i realized that in the end you end up with a broken body, one draw of personal belongings and no visitors.

Many people out there want and need steady visitors. I’ve both worked and volunteered in an assisted living center and a convalescent home for a long time. It was hard to leave, one woman who had grown fond of me started crying. A lot of the people there do appreciate steady visitors who care and aren’t students with name tags just coming there for a class assignment.

Thought provoking video today. One thing I kept in mind when I was working in the corporate world, if something happened to me, they would replace me within a month and move on without a glitch. However, for my family, it would leave a hole forever. So I chose to focus my time and energy where I would be most missed. Work was a means to an end, pay the bills so I could enjoy my life. Money buys happiness and security. Without money, your options in life are limited. No proper health care, no decent housing, no freedom to go, where you want to go, no good food, the list goes on. As a wise person once said: you need to be rich to save money and lead a low- cost life. Having money and managing it well is a fascinating learning process. It takes years, self discipline and you have to make choises. But financial freedom is great. If you don't believe it, ask someone who's struggeling with debt. That person is a modern slave.

I agree with what you've mentioned, however, when it comes to living in the US and having good medical care, I have been very fortunate. I go to the Dental School for high quality Dental Care, which cost 30-40% less than going to a private dentist. I had an excellent experience at UW when cancer reared its ugly head, albeit radiation 'the gift that keeps on giving.' has proven less than fun. I have been fortunate enough to have a wonderful Oncologist, and recieved help paying for it. That said, waiting rooms abound with horror stories of those, even the wealthy, who have had to decrease their standards of living in pretty drastic ways. Sometimes, staying alive, does not come cheap!

As a life-long solo person at 57 I thank you for focusing on the real and enjoyable life of us solos! I have always wondered about why so many of us learn so little both from family and society about setting life goals that are fulfilling for each of us. Instead most of us go with the mainstream life goals that you cover in this video and then end up very disapointed at some time in life..... I also find that one source of fulfillment in life is often overlooked: the journey itself to reach your life goals whatever they are! An example - when I was a child I read a book about a small boy who lived in a very rund-down house with his familiy and a cat - one day all the neighbours came and repaired, cleaned and painted the house and fixed the garden - all for free. I was so taken by this story and told my parents I wanted an old house when I grew up. Everybody I told this to thought I was crazy..... Fast forward more than 50 years via living in student accomodation, flats(not for me) and building and living in my modern house(better, but not right) I now finally live in my small and old farmhouse from 1860 which was in a very bad state when I bought it. During the process of repairing my house I have met so many fantastic people who contributed with everything from old-house craftmanships magic, told stories of the house and its people, gave me old windows and building materials, lamps, furniture and a shower! I truely enjoyed this journey started so many years ago with that book, all its detours, fun, but also hardships on the way! I am looking forward to live in this house on my small farm the rest of my life not only with my cat of course but also my dog, some rabbits and a small flock of Old-Norwegian sheep. Hopefully there will be some hens and a couple of pigs too to fulfill my other life goal of being a small farmer!

I tried law school (ugh), I went to secretarial school, I completed 2 correspondence courses and a continuing education course at a community college. Not to mention it greatly improves the quality of life and decreases your dependence on the health care system. I just want a simple good life. Also, I love fitness and being healthy, but as I'm ageing I've started to realize certain things. Hi Jen, At age 60 & happily single through choice for many years, I just don’t think that much about goals. I have my grown up children, my ex husband who I divorced 20+ years ago is still one of my best friends & my kids father, nature, wildlife, art, learning, books & the simple things in life make me happy. I stopped watching the black box that used to sit in the corner of my room many years ago when I figured the truth was lost in the words many people spoke. I like the truth, I like facts & researching things myself although it’s becoming harder to find the truth. I observe nature & take notes & that gives me knowledge & with that knowledge I can prep for the few years ahead. Every day is valuable, every day is cherished, every day is a struggle with MS & other difficulties but if you get up in the morning & everyday count your blessings, life is a beautiful gift & I hope & pray I live to see many more days. I think a lot of the regret people espouse about their "big wedding" is moreso because they couldn't really afford it, not because a nice wedding isn't a great experience. My wedding wasn't some super over the top extravagant affair but it was a nice wedding and it was a joy to share that with everyone we love and celebrate together. I have no regrets. My memories of that day have only blossomed over time. We didn't compromise our other financial goals in order to pay for it though. The key is to stick to what you can afford, and that goes for more than just weddings. Over spending always catches up to you and it will ruin what should be some of the best parts of your life.

I love this list of things and you're take on them. It is so true that we are all individuals and want different things. I have never owned a new car ( I have mechanics in the family who do the work) so I can drive cars I love that are used cars. I have never owned a new home and never missed that. I have owned 3 houses in my life and no longer want that for myself.I have money and a good pension and I choose to rent. I love it. I am retired and love it. My time is my own to do with what I choose. Every day is a new adventure and I don't compare myself to anyone else. I am truly happy, peaceful and content. I love spending time in the outdoors, also knitting, reading & with my family. I too love visiting big cities and no longer want to live in one. this year I am moving to a lovely small town and hour from the city. thanks for the video.

Intriguing video, insightful content, on-point delivery, seasoned with just the right amount of comedic zest… this is what I want to see more of on KZbin. Thanks a lot for posting. Living life being true to ourselves should be a priority at all times.

Hello silver and solo, I am ten years single, 6 years fully solo and 40. I love your content. It's beautiful to see someone else thriving for being solo but not chiding people for choosing differently.

At 68 I am finally living fulfilling life. After years of office work that paid the bills but resulted in a lot of stress, I’m retired and volunteering with intellectually disabled adults and couldn’t be happier. I have discovered a flair for watercolor painting and I’ve won awards for my garden. That’s a fulfilling life for me!

oh boy do I agree on the big expensive wedding. If a must, a small intimate wedding with close family and friends to share your day. Spend that money on a down payment for a new house.

Reaching the top rung does not mean you are the best or the brightest. It means you are the most liked employee by the boss and least likely to be the most productive employee. Or related to the boss.

All of the places I have worked have been reasonably well merit based. I have never understood this notion that everyone "at the top" is an unproductive, useless brown noser who won a popularity contest. Not my experience at all. You may just not see or understand the work they are doing.

Being a good leader is a completely different set of skills to being good at whatever the company's domain / business is. And if people are being promoted based on who likes whom, it's time to find a different company -- that's a recipe for failure. The other way to 'reach the top' is to found the company ;P

Love this. I never wanted those extremes, but i did fall into the trap of more=better. Having a limited but sufficient amount of money and comfort is so freeing…

This is so refreshing! It's easy to get caught up in the glimmer and glitz of what life can be, but as you pointed out, this lifestyle has price tags beyond financial. I didn't understand this until middle age. Now, my choices are spirited board games with family, an understanding that my career is only one facet of my life, and comfort in knowing that my life still has meaning, even if it's ordinary.

I'm a medicinal woman, happiest when out foraging or blending. I've joined a Folk School and we have built a wonderful community, with libraries full of amazing books, seed libraries and food pantries. Barter based workshops, maker's swaps, community soup/ pizza share nights where we come together to create food and eat. Its definitely my idea of a rich life.

I love this video! I couldn’t agree more. These days, exposure to what everyone else is doing is ubiquitous. It can be a challenge to get everyone out of your head and figure out what really matters to you. I just happen to be sitting here in my new recliner that was delivered this morning, that I never got til now because “recliners are ugly”. I’m so happy 😂.

I LOVE that you’re normalizing showing your natural self. You look normal, beautiful and I can concentrate on listening to you instead of looking at a bunch of makeup / clothing crap. I’m mid 40’s and I’m finally beginning to feel ok letting my grey hair grow. Getting used to wearing less and less make up and just feeling comfortable in my own body. I’m tired of trying to be and look and act for someone else. Looking forward to my continued single life with a happier mindset and you’re def helping me see all that I can do, and how to prepare for it. Being independent and feeling like I don’t need to have someone to be here for me to be happy or feel secure as I get older. I’m truly loving having my own choices my own time and not having to make compromises anymore. I just haven’t found the person worth making compromises with and giving my freedom and ability to live my life in peace and how exactly I want it to be.

I agree with all your bullet points and appreciate that you leave room for people to do what does fulfill them, even if it's a little different from your personal choices. I'm working with my kids to find that balanced perspective as they are on the cusp of getting out into that world. Thanks, Jen! Have a lovely, balanced day! 🙂

Yes, to paraphrase simply, I feel that you are saying choosing activities and goals that please YOU are the key to having a fulfilling life, rather than following the leader or chasing goals told by others as the thing to achieve - societal goals need not be your template. I agree, life can be so much fun when we think for ourselves and create from our autonomy rather than being overly influenced by other(s) - sometimes the more unique or outside the norm a goal/activity the more exciting, too. I am always inspired by the food for thought, that knowing smirk, and those vibrant eyes! All the best!
