DUUUUDE. I just want to tell you, I’ve been playing drums for over 19 years, and my left hand has ALWAYS sucked, despite trying multiple practice techniques to get it up to speed. Nothing has worked, and as such my single stroke fills have ALWAYS sucked. Well, on Sunday just been I discovered this video and gave it a crack, and could only get through each stage up to 90-130 (right hand fine, left hand the pooooooos). Monday afternoon, I had another go, and got it to 100-140. I went to band practice that night (Monday), and BRO my fills have never been cleaner! We play at around 200-210bpm, and yeah while still not perfect, after 36 hours from first watching this video and 2 attempts at how far I could go, Jjust, fricking basically IMMEDIATELY this has given me an improvement. Just got off the sticks now (Wednesday night), and I got up to 100-150 (started at 90-110 tonight). Dude, this what I’ve been looking for. Thank you! I know this long after posting you probably won’t see this, but thank you so much anyway.

I've been watching this video every day for 2 weeks and have been practicing 2 or 3 stages at a time. At the start, my left hand could barely keep up with 130bpm, and now I can cleanly play 140bpm. I'm a huge fan of having you practicing along with us, thank you for this video!

Great to hear that Anthony! Take care of those hands though, one thing I think I fail to say in the video is to get rest days after those intense workout days. Let those muscles heal then you can go faster and easier. Glad you're having a blast so far though!

Hi Wei Lung @ArtOfDrummingHQ, thank you for the awesome content ! Really appreciate it. I have some questions about how to apply this workout, especially when you hit a plateau and how to progress further. For example Stage 8 and 9 are no problem but I am not able to complete Stage 10. Should I just work on Stage 7 - 8 - 9 or try to complete Stage 10 at all cost? Thank you !

7/3/24 Current level: Stage 8. This is still hard and my arms rly feel the burn. First time doing endurance at higher tempos 7/17/24 It's 1am, just did stage 8 again. Felt decently easy, started to feel the burn but wasn't too bad. Def will try stage 9 tmr 8/10/24 12:13am. Tried stage 9, right hand was burningg, and left hand couldn't completely keep up after a minute or so, but I shakily made it through. Doesn't count as a pass. Stuck at level 9 for now. Also did stage 8 cleanly after the stage 9 attempt.

I had a student return to me after 3 years of not touching the drums. I was surprised at first, and then not so much because I realized that this is proof her drumming passion is real. So I'm glad you found your way back. Just be nice to yourself and pick like 1 thing to work on. You'll see some results after a few weeks, and then that'll in turn motivate you to add a 2nd thing, and so on and so forth. I'm creating some content about practicing and goal setting/achieving in the next few months and I hope those will help you!

Thank you! I was so much more driven to practice as a teenager. I “got good” at guitar and okay at drums, and just kinda got in a headspace where I thought I was wasting my time if I practiced the basics haha. It’s tempting to just grind on the hard stuff (only AAL I can do is the fill and beginning groove of Physical Education, minus the triplets you added). It’s so obvious this is what I need to be practicing, but seeing a great drummer do it alongside me for an hour is super encouraging! Thank you and keep doing the drum lords’ work :)

Even if you’re failing at some stage, it’s still good to go through with the rest of the exercise making a fool of yourself. The discomfort will tell your brain exactly how fast you’re trying to go, and thus the muscle twitch fibres will be given more attention.

Take your time and don't overwork your muscles! Just in case you're doing this, it is not intended to be done more than a set day, hence it says 6 mins a day in the title. Sorry if it wasn't clear in the explanation oops. Anyway I'm happy this helps :) it took me a good 6 years of Drumming before I could hit 200bpm by the way. But I didn't have much help. So hopefully you'll take a much shorter time! Thanks Dave!

Thanks for this! For practising, would you recommend using heavier sets of sticks?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I would, sometimes I turn the sticks around to use the butt end when I'm doing pad workouts, this forces me to rely more on my muscle power, much like using heavier sticks. Just be careful to also pay attention to rebound which is gonna be more difficult to achieve. You never want to be stifling it unnecessarily

are you using all wrist technique or as you go faster you're using finger technique also?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 10 ай бұрын
It's a mix. Less wrist as I go faster. But if I want power then still incorporate the wrists.
@RBDrums
@RBDrums 4 жыл бұрын
question: when you're getting faster (180, 190, 200) are you switching from simply using the rebound to pushing with your back fingers?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 4 жыл бұрын
Rebound is essential all around. But to try to answer your question, there is a shift from purely being a wrist motion to incorporating the fingers. For my technique, you can see I still use quite a lot of wrist at 190 and the fingers don't move much, but at 200, the fingers kick in to help. They're sort of working like a team here. Although I've seen people completely wrist this at 200BPM (sheer muscle power) and I've seen people completely use fingers at that speed (which results in easier speed, but loss of volume). So it's a matter of, how loudly do you need to play at those tempos, and you train the specific muscle groups to meet your needs. Hope that isn't too complicated to follow.

@@ArtOfDrummingHQ now i'm at stage 9 but this is only 2 weeks since I started over again everyday !! I think all is happening in the head, somedays I feel like I understand the right technique to be fast and it isn't even an effort and sometimes it is a real struggle to achieve even stage 8. Gotta keep motivated everyday I think that's the only way

Wait, Wei, am I just supposed to choose 1 stage to practice? I've playing along to your video from stage 1 to 8 for about a week now. Is this incorrect/inefficient?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 4 жыл бұрын
Yes if stage 8 is your max, just start there, then attempt the next. Repeat once or twice everyday until stage 9 becomes easier and easier and you beat it. And so on and so forth. Hope that helps :) starting from any lower stage is inefficient , since you already are a master of the previous stages. Sorry I wasn't clear in the video!

I'm stuck on stage 4 bc of my left hand and tbh it kinda feels like I'm getting worse in that hand. Has anyone else experienced the same? How long did it take to push thru the plateau? Thnx

My worst hand is still my worst hand, it never caught up to the same strength and speed. But both of them can get faster steadily. For me to get to 200bpm took me around 3 years. But I didn't practice everyday. And it was a pace that was challenging yet still allows me free time for other pursuits.

Hey man, counting really helps, for me I count each stroke as follows 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a. It gets the brain on the same page as the hand and helps to even things out. Don't worry about speed, speed is a byproduct of good technique and accuracy. Low and slow then build it up! Even if you have to spend a week on 1 level it's all good! 🤘

Same for my left leg. Its spastic compared to my right. But just think of your right hand as the patient teacher waiting for the student(left hand) to catch up. The student has the job of being consistent in his plan and practice. The teacher has the job of being analytical and patient. 3 months later, you should see a big improvement if you stick with this. All the best!
