The white flakes, dry skin, are most likely from the hot water and from the scrubbing of the scalp with your fingernails. I also notice when I don't use a lot of conditioner (I use drugstore) I get dry skin. Most likely because my scalp is not moisturized. You may want to use a brush or a turkey baster (lol) to coat your hair.

You could try a teatree oil spray after shower. Really helped me. Just 3 or 4 drops of tea tree essential oil in a cup of water. Spray it on your scalp and rub it in. Helps with the oilyness too (Is that the spelling?) Plus as an Indian I can say shikakai is the best remedy for dandruff..!! Love your videos btw

To keep your curls tight and have less frizz, don't brush your hair after you get out of the shower. Do it before you wash. I have very very similar texture hair to you and sleep on it wet too. Then in the morning I part it. Or if it's really wonky just use your fingers to even it out when it's wet. Also, standard towels cause a lot of frizz. Use a large cotton T shirt to dry your hair, or sleep on. Trust me, it makes a huge difference!

The options you are trying is good.. you are right this is being used for centuries (i am Indian :) ).. my no poo for last 6 months is- i apply mix of coconut oil, castor oil, almond and olive oil overnight.. to wash i use shikakai, reetha (soapnut powder gives lather), neem mix- instead of tea everytime i mix it as a paste apply to hair in bath scrub and wash. paste makes it more manageable, but you have to make sure to rinse it well else paste could remain (I'm ok with it on dark hair). eventually dandruff goes. for dandruff you could try a paste of methi (fenugreek seeds) with little oil- apply this n leave for half an hour and wash/ rinse of well..

hi ashmeet. it takes some amount of permutation combination with quantity. in one wash i scrub twice. first time more of shikakai powder second time more of reetha which gives lather..

I am close to 5 months no poo, and what I have noticed is that the only time my hair is slightly greasy and kind of has dry skin (not dandruff) is when I consume gluten the previous day. How I get rid of it is kind of similar to what you do, wash with warm water and then end with cold water. I also make a hair mask with amla powder and rosewater, let it sit on for about 15 minutes, then wash it off. Along with neem, shikakai and amla, you should try fuller's earth and sandalwood powder as well, those work amazing with the kind of dry skin/ dandruff you are referring to. Instead of making your tea with water and the powders, try making it with green tea or chamomile tea or any herbal tea for that matter with the powders. What I do is I collect a week's worth of used tea bags, store it in the freezer, and when ready, I steep them with dry rosemary leaves, strain and store it in a glass bottle, use it in hair masks or as a hair rinse in place of ACV or along with ACV. Also, highly recommend using tea tree essential oil. You can also use peppermint essential oil instead of lavender, just to switch things up since each essential oil has its own benefit right. Plus they smell amazing!

Thanks for this recipe. Just bought the powders and am going to give it a go. I've been loo poo/no poo for about 18 months, mostly low poo as I haven't found a no poo method that works well. However, the low poo organic shampoo I use at the moment leave my hair very limp and flat, which has been difficult to adjust to as before my hair had so much volume. I never wear my hair down anymore because it just looks weird. Your hair looks like it has a good amount of volume so I'm hoping for the same result.

My sister has dandruff (really bad, scabs, flakes, everything). I bought her some tea tree oil and dropped about 10 drops of it on a 16 oz bottle of shampoo. It's helping her dandruff and dry scalp a lot - and I use it because the winters in upstate ny cause me to have dry flakes. It helped us - have you tried it? It might help.

I found the powers too drying for my hair (2b low porosity) but I'm having more sussess with this recipe I made up: 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup of kaolin clay 500ml water pinch of sea salt I freeze the lemon juice in teaspoon sized ice cubes, so it's quick & easy just to chuck the lemon juice icecube and the clay in the warm water, pour it in an old water bottle with a sports cap. then just wet my hair in the shower, squirt it on it & scrub my scalp, then leave it whilst I wash my body, then rinse it out well. My water where I am is really hard water, so I had a lot of waxy feeling in my hair doing water only because of it. This recipe seems to be settling my scalp down too. Hope this helps.

I've been using Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap for shampoo (diluted of course, maybe 1:5 ratio), but before applying that, I use homemade aloe gel on my hair/scalp and let it sit. The aloe has been making my hair so soft and giving it a nice sheen! :) I'm still trying to get rid of dandruff too, but I want to wait a little longer to see the results of aloe.

Thanks for this video! I just commented on you instagram the other day that your hair looks awesome right now :D So you got me looking into these things now, haha. Now I have manny questions, and since you've been looking into it, I thought you might know some answers :p : I heard that shikakai can change the colour of blonde hair, can you make other mixtures with these kinds of powders for instance amla and reetha? And would you recommend the pre-mixed powdered shampoo from brands like Khadi or Eliah? Also, I read that some people mix it into a paste with less water then you do, why would you recommend a thinner mixture?

Your hair looks lovely! I have tried washing with water only but couldn't stand the waxy feeling, would you say these powders leave your hair feeling really clean? I would appreciate any advice you can give me :)

I think you're doing a great job on your no poo journey, and your hair looks amazing! I'm so happy to hear that things are getting better for you! You're using Ayurvedic powders? THAT'S SO COOL! They say Ayurvedic medicine is 3000 years old. Cool shit if you ask me. I dyed my hair with henna twice last year, and I loved the way it made my hair feel and look when it was long, especially the color. But the henna also made my hair straight, which is why I cut it all off. Currently, I'm playing around with sun bleaching. It's working out well so far. :) Apparently amla powder increases curls rather than diminishes them (like henna or neutral henna). Something about rearranging the bonds in your hair that create the actual curls?

Has anyone ever tried the “scrich and preen” method with wavy/curly hair? Since I’ve gone “no poo” my hair has definitely gained its curl pattern tremendously 😊 I started out with shea moisture shampoo and conditioner then transferred to the “baking soda and acv rinse” but I felt as if the baking soda was extremely drying no matter what I did and so I went on to just the ACV and I found that helped for awhile but in turn my hair managed to get extremely greasy and felt a bit heavy and so I decided to use the baking soda and avc one last time to clear out the buildup a bit and then continued on with water only but it had been 1 day and my scalp was excruciatingly oily so I came across the “scrinch and preen” method (idk if I’m saying it right) but I found the wooden brush tugged on my curls and really didn’t do much for detangling more than it hurt and tangled my hair EVEN MORE (might be the kind of brush brand?) So I went on to detangling it with a wide tooth comb and bringing the oils down VERY carefully with the wooden brush for a few days but my scalp is so sensitive that now everytime I touch my scalp it is painful and I have developed some headaches and my hair was a frizzy mess Bc I brushed out my waves/curls 😭🤦🏻‍♀️ ik this is long 🙁😂if anyone has any tips please help I’ve ran out of ideas, any tips would be so helpful 😊

Great video. It's been so fun following your no poo journey. Your hair looks really, really good! Have you tried using soap nuts? I've been no poo for 6 months now and I simply love soap nuts. They wash my hair super clean. You boil 10 soap nuts in 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes. And then use the liquid as shampoo. Let it sit in your hair for some minutes and rinse out. I don't have to use anything else, no conditioner. I wash my hair about once a month and use just water in between. I can only recommend trying soap nuts. I also wash all of my clothes with them. Sooo good 😊

I know really well that dandruff in the hairline area! the thing is that I have highly sensitive scalp (if I'm not mistaking that's your problem as well). when I was using conventional shampoo, even the softest ones like the ones for babies, after wash I would have dry scalp just above the temples, it would also itch in the back, just in the middle. so now I've been testing out an Ayurvedic shampoo which has shikakai in it as well and I'm just applying it to the hair, not the roots, and it's been working pretty well, those parts are not irratated as much. Although I kick up some flakes while massaging (not in the shower, when I brush my hair out). it seems that the hairline is a pretty sensitive area so maybe it's a good idea not to scrub it really hard. but it depends, this may be caused by sensitiveness or by a buildup. I guess you should experiment a bit more :)

Eva G hi, I have very thick, long, dark curly, mature hair and I was finding that at the back centre of my head (roughly where you lay your head to sleep) my hair would get a course/dry feeling and would split much quicker than the rest of my hair. I initially started using Argan oil most mornings (no more than a 5p piece - "less is more") into the palm of my hand, rub it through your palms and stroke it through "the ends" of your hair. I found that for a long time it really helped keep my hair in beautiful condition (in fact my hair grew quicker so I was getting it cut cause I didn't want it that long.) After about 2 yrs I found it didn't seem to work as well so I am now using Macadamia Oil in the same way and yes my hair is showing a positive difference. I hope this helps in some way. :)

Hi Madeleine, I've been following along with your noo poo updates and really enjoying them. You're hair is looking gorgeous and really healthy - woo! Regarding the flaking, I'm wondering if it's possible that it's the water. It may sound a little strange but I live a little further north up in Cheltenham and our water is terrible. It's so full of chlorine that it completely strips my skin and leaves my scalp flaky. I even put coconut oil on my face before getting in the shower otherwise is a dry, flaky mess afterwards :-(. When I shower in other areas where the water doesn't seem to be so heavily treated I don't have this problem. Just a thought, might be worth testing when you stay other places.

I recommend also alep soap (original one only with olive oil and bay leaves oil) smells horrible ,but it is doing soo good especially for hair growth. u can use any essential oil you like for dandruff(add a few drops on that "tea"mix), and try massaging the scalp instead of scratching it .may work for you.for me the stress was the source of scratching/ flakes/itchiness/dandruff/ and not drinking enough liquids which caused dehydration on my skin and scalp.one curious awkward question : does your hair smell?😀like when I get greasy hair it has a specific scent, and I recognize I kinda like that"freshly washed hair with shampoo"smell.

I have the same issue with flakes (It's not dandruff). I also have oily hair, can't go a day without a wash otherwise I could use the oil to fry some food. When it's really bad I will literally put regular skin lotion on visible areas after I have styled to make sure they are not so prominent.

You look awesome! I really want to try no poo. Your hair type is really similar to mine and I do get dandruff sometimes after shower but it goes away like yours. I think hot water doesn't help. I use warm water to wash and before I get out the shower I use cold water because it helps with blood flow and hair loss. I do scrub the shampoo but gently. If I don't scrub, I get more dandruff and I think the dandruff is just old skin in the scalp so you need to massage to take it out. Also you should scrub when you are rinsing your shampoo and conditioner (or the herbs that I can't remember the name) but be careful to not overdo it. My hair is wavy like yours but the fronf part is more curly so I use twist rope braid when my hair is almost dry. It makes my curls more uniform but beachy. Maybe it helps with the look that you want.

I have curly hair and find using natural conditioner with no nasties as a shampoo. I wash it once with the conditioner that's it , Cos its conditioner I don't need to condition it either. My hair is in fantastic condition. I also use the same conditioner as a hair product. Squirt a penny size into your hand, rub hands together so it becomes a tacky past and scrunch into hair. All done! Curly hair doesn't like to much fuss. Xx

Maybe you could start with normal shampoo but postponing washing. So first starting washing it with normal shampoo every other day, en then evere other other day. And when you wash it not everyday anymore trying real no poo?

I used to be no poo before (I did honey and ACV wash once a month and water only the rest of the time) and I had the exact same problem as you with the white flakes except that I have blonde hair so it wasn't that obvious but still :/ Also correct me if I'm wrong but your hair is starting to look a little frizzy on the roots area? Maybe it's just the lighting I don't know, but I remember dealing with this when I was doing no poo. I was no poo for almost a year until I gave up and started using natural shampoo and conditioner (I use Australian Organics shampoo & conditioner for dry hair, it's the best thing that have ever happened to my hair). When I washed my hair with shampoo the first time in almost a year, my hair just wouldn't get clean, I had a ridicilous amount of waxy buidup, it took me months of using shampoo to finally feel like my hair is clean! I kinda regretted doing no poo after that thinking I ruined my hair, but now I'm grateful for it, just like you it made my hair grow so fast so much and the texture is a lot better. My hair is now so nice, soft bouncy and lightweight I love it. I think if you ever don't feel it anymore don't force yourself to keep doing it, but I definitely think that doing no poo is a good way to give your hair a break for like 3 months a year or something.

Ellie Grey I love doing no poo and highly doubt I will ever go back to shampoo and conditioner! It was just such a nightmare for me washing it so often! The positives out way any negatives. It will just take time with this method that actually works for me for the flakes to go away. And my hair has some frizziness but that's a combination of the fact that I have curly/wavy hair so have always had SOME frizziness, depending on the day. I also have a habit of playing with my hair which creates more frizziness and I also desperately need a haircut! Normally that helps with it a lot!

Ellie Grey have tried oils before yes and they only work in teeny amounts on the ends of my hair! It really doesn't bother me very much, I think this video emphasises it more than it shows up in real life! My instagram pictures are a better depiction of what my hair looks like!

What ratio did you use for the hair spray? I've made a salt spray, which works ok, and I'd love to try something new :) I've recently discovered that I can buy aloe leaves at my grocery store! Fresh, no preservatives, and package-free :) Very exciting

Honestly I think you experience dandruff because of hard water. Shower filter ( actually shower head ) which you can find from amazon for £9 pounds can help it out. I changed it and notice softer skin + hair. But softer water makes harder to clean hair.

We were raised by a generation that was heavily marketed to for hair color products. We were told that going grey wasn't pretty. Not true. Love your greys. So many gorgeous and elegant women just let nature be their colorist, now. (Interestingly, people are dying their hair grey on purpose nowadays) Embrace it! :) I'm in my 30's, started going grey as a teen & I've had co-workers think I am still in my teens! Grey hair doesn't necessarily age you, but it may distinguish you from your peers with chemically-dependant hair.

Just came across your video. Your hair does look great! You're so pretty! If anyone is interested, be sure to check out Calia haircare. It's Canadian. They have a 'shampoo' and 'conditioner' that doesn't have anything that isn't natural, Pure and clean. It's the most pure product that doesn't require any thinking or work on my end AND my hair loves it. It's also very reasonably priced. This line is a gem. I wash once a week. It doesn't lather like conventional shampoo of course but it works. It cleans and moisturizes the hair leaving it soft and shiny. I love it.

Hair cap? I hear they work well. I guess getting your hair wet before you go in prevents the chemicals from soaking into it somehow. But I haven't done any research on that myself. Something to look into.
