How about Erik Karlsson's $11.5mill/year over 8 years? He's a defensive liability, and wasn't the same Karlsson as the Ottawa days. And that forced the Sharks to have to let Pavelski (their captain!) go to free agency. Also maybe you could do a video of players who's careers have gotten better after cashing in (like Ovechkin, Chara, Panarin)

@dennisfontler74433 жыл бұрын
Considering the question then Semin was a great deal and Darling have to be the worst one by the Canes. The question regards only FA signings and the FA signing for Semin was 1 year 7 m and Canes got 44 points in 44 games for that year. What screwed them was EXTENDING him for five more years at 7 m, but that's NOT a free agency signing since he already played for them when the contract was signed.

To be fair if you look at Bollands playoffs points.....dude's an animal when it comes to important games being on a third or fourth line and playing PK. I can see why a team would look to sign him after those years with the Blackhawks, but at that price......ridiculous. You're taking a player who thrived under a completely different setup and throwing him in with your team with the hope they make the playoffs so he can do what he does. Its almost the exact same issue with the byfuglien loss. What did Winnipeg do with him? Absolutely nothing. Dude's a shell of his former self because of a simple change of scenery and staff.

I'm glad you did not put Skinner on here, although I would not have been surprised to see him. Based on Skinner's analytical stats, he was still getting plenty of chances like his prior 40-goal season, but just was not finishing those chances, and was hurt by an injury as well as no longer being dished to by Eichel. He needs a better playmaker getting him the puck.

Wild fan here- Zach Parise. But it wasn't a lack of effort I feel for the guy. Still somehow one of my favourites.

Roman Turek play with the Flames went downhill after he signed a huge contract early in the 2001-2002 season. He had shutouts in the Flames first two games that season . And that was pretty much it for his career which ended after the 2003-2004 as he backed up Mikka Kiprusoff.

Trouba was pretty good defensively but he didn’t put up the points that he did because he was on the power play with Laine Wheeler and Scheifele. He doesn’t even play on the power play in NY, which is why Tony DeAngelo, who took the power play spot, had an insane year

He wasn't a liability, but analytically he was still having his worst season in his entire career. I have always been a very big fan of Trouba, and I know he will bounce back.

I feel like a lot of this comes down to two things. First players are evaluated based on their statistics, perhaps without fully taking into account where they play. It is more difficult to make points on a worse team, meaning that the players that play on stronger teams are overvalued. Secondly teams sign players for long periods - this is very risk prone, especially with players who are approaching the end of their careers. I am interested to hear from someone with insight into the NHL and the business of american sports in general with an explanation as to why teams are so willing to sign players over such long periods of time, as it seems that it significantly hampers the teams freedom of action for a long time to come.

Bobrovsky's situation is a little ironic, considering what happened to former teammate Ilya Bryzgalov. Bobrovsky was pretty solid as a Flyer during the season, but he was disappointing come playoff time, which was the reason why the Flyers brought Bryzgalov in on that ridiculous contract. Saying Bryzgalov underperformed as a Flyer is an understatement, and now Bobrovsky is also going through the same thing as a Panther. If Bobrovsky gets bought out by next year, then the parallels to Bryzgalov will be eerily similar, as the Flyers bought him out just two years into the contract.

Geoff Courtnalll did that regularly every time he had to resign with the blues in the last year of his contract his play improved greatly every time it happened so much the blues announcers pointed it out each year he was trying to resign

Clarkson was hot in 2012 because he was on the Devils and they were high performing that year, making it to the cup finals. I’m not sure if this trend has to do with slacking off once they get the contract as much as it’s likely just what happens sometimes when moving teams. This is the same reason we often seen players traded and then have breakout seasons, they just play better or worse with different teammates.

I disagree with including Faulk in here. He’s played very well on the left side with Pietrangelo once Bouwmeester had his heart issues. Also, the Blues power play has been so good this year with Parayko, Pietrangelo, and Dunn getting the lion’s share of the opportunities that Faulk’s lost out on his favorite tool for racking up points. Unlike the rest of the guys on your list, Faulk’s numbers are a reflection of the fact that he’s on a stacked team that has a lot of internal competition for ice time. What ice time he does get he plays well.

Good thing Faulk got his shit together l. As a fellow Minnesotan it's great to see.

If you haven’t done it already how about some players who were set for big contracts, but had a disappointing year or got injured and got less money

I grew up in MI during the Red Wings high point. Federov was our lazy superstar. After Yzerman retired more top guys started loafing after a big signing, but Federov was a famous loaf.
