Actually yes. My friend James and I our friendship is just hanging on by a thin thread. And this started with Super Smash Bros. The very first time we played Smash Bros against each other was in High School back when I was in 10th grade I beat him then after a while he got so damn good I couldn't beat him and this followed through in to Smash 4. But it was not just Super Smash Bros it was also Tekken , Golden Eye Rogue Agent , Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 ( despite the fact that I hate first person shooters except The House of The Dead: Overkill) , Playstation Allstars Battle Royale , Brawlhalla , 2 player competitive mode in Sonic 2,3 and Mania. The thing is all those games we play together he beats me in all the time. In Smash Bros I win like 1 or 2 matches out of like 30 or 50 depending on how long we play over each other's houses. Every game we play not one of them not a single one of them I can say I am better than him in and I thought when we first went at it in Injustice Gods Among Us he was still beating my ass. That's why I just don't play him in anything anymore , we dont talk that much or hang out that much. I know I'm a grown man acting like a child letting a video game come between our friendship but the truth is he says he plays to have fun he does not care about winning or losing but that is a real easy thing to say when you are the one winning every single time. Now yes he does offer to play co-op games with him where we automatically are on teams but the thing is I just don't want to share the spotlight all the time. Yeah co-op we both win but the truth is it's because of him we won yeah he's technically still getting all the glory I'm being in his shadow.

Most of these actually strengthen friendships or are neutral if you are playing casually, it's just the idiots who try to play the games competitively that get their friendships broken. Seriously though, there is no reason NSMBU's CO-OP should turn into VERSUS. That's just the way some overly-competitive people decide to waste their time, instead of working together to beat the level and having fun.
