Now, to clarify: usable abs are always visible at low body fat percentage, but not all abs that are visible are necessarily usable.

@@DonDregon did you watch the video? Visible abs are basically made by starving yourself so you have so little fat that your muscle shows through. These muscles are weak and unusable If you train properly, that grows and strengthens the muscles, so even if you don’t have visible abs, you have a very strong core

My favorite part of this guy is he gives the variations for different difficulties and explains how you plan your reps. Makes it very easy as a disabled person to modify the workout to my needs and ability. (Weight loss is not my goal but im down 3 inches around my waist and feel much stronger already after making huge lifestyle changes a little over 2 months ago)

Opera singer here with a fun opera thing for those who care(is relevant to video). This video is also a good example of "how to extend your vibrato higher into your range" the higher you go in opera(or any singing for that matter), the more air it takes. You use your abs to send the air through your vocal folds which makes the sound. The higher you go, the harder you need to be able to squeeze yourself. Hence: abs. Vibrato is the sound of ease when you are using more than enough air to hit the note. So if I want a good vibrato on my high notes I need two things: lung capacity and abs for days.

@@faustohernandez3434 absolutely man. It’s important to remember when starting that there’s a small adjustment period. You’ll likely feel tired, sore, maybe demotivated for the first week or so, but let me tell ya, when you start seeing the improvements (which come fast as a beginner), you don’t even need motivation anymore. I build up stress through the day/week, deal with issues in school or life or whatever, and I just wanna forget all that. Working out let’s me physically vent by beating the shit out of weights, throwing my body around, and giving me a challenge I have control over. It makes me a winner in times when I feel like a loser. I really suggest it :) If you do start, be kind to yourself, start lighter than you can do, don’t go to failure and do a little light dynamic stretching before to increase mobility and blood flow. Not all workouts will be your best, but when you do just the first rep, most of the difficulty is gone. If you don’t have access to a gym, there are plenty of exercises you can do with body weight too. I could go on for hours but you got the internet with much more knowledgeable people than me 😅. I know you can find the peace and strength you’re looking for Julio, just keep your head up and keep going! Peace ✌️

My grandpa is 91 and as of a year ago, he still had usable abs thanks to years of doing pilates. His exercise routine kept him strong and fit enough to care for my grandma during the last years of her life. They were married for 67 years.

@Cricket fan My grandma's health deteriorated severely those last few years of her life. She had congestive heart failure, COPD, and severe osteoporosis. The osteoporosis led to her having a toe amputated and breaking both hips. She was in a wheelchair the last 2 years of her life. My grandpa had to help her get in and out of her wheelchair. He helped her bathe and get dressed. He took over the household chores when she started struggling to do them. The only thing he didn't do and still doesn't do is cook. My mom and her siblings have taken care of the cooking for the last 10 years or so.

As a 53 year old that can still do a one hand handstand. This guy is correct, flexibly and core strength are what kept me comfortable. I have no joint, knee, hip, or back issues.

Gotta say, the L compression may not look it but it's fire. Nothing feels better than managing a few seconds of an L sit after a couple of weeks when you couldn't tolerate 2 seconds of it before

@@abigailmeredith659 Protein powder ain't bad, lmao. What is bad is if you don't take any other nutrients other than protein powder. You can't supplement all your meals with just protein powder, which is why they say to have recommendations on how many shakes you should make. There are some other more minor health complications might be there as well, but nothing serious. I just think it is dumb to lump protein powder, a useful and helpful supplement towards getting your protein in for the day, into the same category as steroids, or to act like it is some bullshit, because it really isn't.

This makes a lot of sense. I’ve been a dancer for 20 years and work out pretty consistently but could never figure out why I still have a belly/no visible abs but can actively engage them. This makes me feel a lot better! Edit: I wasn’t worried about making abs, just like learning new things! I do fast and I love my body the way it is, visible abs or not! It’s just hard as a dancer when you hear that you’re just fat, not that you still have a strong core

It's very common for women to not have visible abs even if they're strong. Men have a lower essential body fat percentage, meaning they can have less fat and still be healthy than women can. Most women with visible abs are actually underweight.

It’s just down to body fat percentage and genetics. Some people don’t have very visible abs even when low enough BF. My abs are easily my strongest part of my physique in terms of what is deemed aesthetically desirable. Mine are visible even when I’m quite high body fat percentage, up to fifteen or more. When I’m really in shape it’s more like an 8 pack. In fact I have to be really out of shape for them to disappear and I’ve only ever been like that for a short period of time. My weakest part of my physique is my upper arms, biceps and triceps. I’ve never really trained abs on their own much. Here and there but you will be activating your core when doing all other exercises, if you’re a dancer you definitely will. Nutrition goes a long way though and the old saying that abs are made in the kitchen does have some truth to it.

A good thing to remember is that doing harder exercises will also make it possible for you to see your abs at a higher bodyfat, which looks good and it's healthier than being at a very low bf%. I Love L-sits, dude

I am always explaining this to my dancers. Thank you for being out there and reiterating these facts. Each group I work with we need to go through this and of course the harm of females trying to maintain a visible six pack all year. I have seen countless girls lose strength and not be able to dance trying to lose the body fat to keep an aesthetic six pack. The more we educate the better it will be.

Tbh they're probably just on a bad diet or not eating enough. Women dont have to be that low of body fat to have abs and its definitely possible to maintain them. If they're not eating enough theyre gonna lose strength quick though.

Resistance training is not only external weights but bodyweight exercises too, as soon as you give your body resistance through gravity or other means that is resistance training. Also basic push-ups are one variation but you can go full way to full planche push ups which is insanely harder than lifting hard for your own bodyweight. Just watch how many people you know can do them and how many can lift proportionally heavy as you. Yeah exactly

Great advice! Just remember to note that women who have recently had a baby and have diastasis recti should not do any planks. If you have a week for a diastasis recti, there are very gentle core exercises that will help you heal your abs :)

An NFL player is specifically trained to play his position. a defense linebaker must be able to withstand high impact forces for a short time, an offensive linebaker must be able to unleash high forces suddenly. Of course they are strong, but only in what they are trained for. as soon as flexibility and mobility come into play, something you need for many complex exercises, they are completely lost. that's ok because they're highly specialized in what they do, but that doesn't have much to do with general strength. I do pole dance acrobatics myself, in a football game I would lose hard against a trained player in his discipline, but I can guarantee you that this player in my sport would not even have a chance, even the simplest basic exercises would be one huge challenge as he is not trained for it. I won't even get into complex exercises that require strength in the entire body, such as a shoulder mount or the famous human flag. the point is, nfl players are very strong but very specific, their power isn't usable for anything other than the position they play, so not really a usable strength.

I mean you could try to argue that a gymnast is an overall higher preforming athlete. But the majority knows that’s just silly lol. you have to be more specific. a gymnast probably has the best biceps of any athlete by nature of the isometric contraction on their biceps basically at all times, but they'd never beat a powerlifter in squat bench deadlift, an NFL player in explosive movements, a track runner in speed, dancer in flexibility, rock climber in back or forearm/finger strength, racecar driver in neck strength, or calisthenics bro in core strength. each one has certain things, there's no overall strongest except strongmen but they have to weigh 350-450lbs to get to their strength which shifts the curve quite a bit.

It's normal for your quads to get tired but not for them to end up sore. This guy doesn't know shit about APT it seems. You're not implementing enough core strength if your quads end up sore. What can result is your quads getting more worked and subsequently getting stronger than your abs and they will be the muscle that rules your posture. So, naturally they will pull your spine forwards, because they win the tug of war against your abs trying to maintain a straight spine, resulting in a state of Lumbar Lordosis. How do i know? Because i once listened to dumbshits online who said quads hurting is normal and now voila, i cannot do any ab exercises involving the lower half of my body and have a plethora of back problems despite being able to deadlift 1.5 times my body weight. I'm currently working on fixing it but it's a process that takes months and the more time you trained your abs the wrong way, the longer it'd take to fix it. What it will do is build your abs faster, but the sacrifice of poor posture is not worth it. What I'd suggest is a simple adjustment, bend your knees very slightly, enough to not feel any major strain in your quads but not so much that the exercise becomes too easy. Bending your knees will release the strain on your quads and will force your abs to do most of the work, people do this a lot to isolate a muscle and train it, a common example being bending your wrist downward in bicep curls which completely relaxes your forearm and maximizes the output of your biceps.

​@@uzzionpathak2637 Putting a bend in your knees is acrually going to help the quads (Specifically the Rectus Femoris in this case) contribute even further to hip flexion. An L-Sit position puts the Rec Fem in a maximally shortened position where it is very inefficient at producing force, but if an L-Sit is a difficult position for you to hold the body is going to recruit every muscle it can find to help out. L-Sits will never preferentially hit the abs, no matter what you do as the abs are first and foremost act on the spine and pelvis. I'm not a calisthenics expert, but generally an L-Sit is performed with the pelvis neutral or slightly anteriorly tilted. If the abs switch on, then another muscle has to activate to cancel out the posterior tilt generated by the abs. As opposed to if the hip flexors are recruited first whose actions sum to pure hip flexion and anterior tilt. (TFL internal rotation cancelled out by sartorious external rotation, TFL+Sartorius abduction cancelled out by Illiopsoas adduction)

Thank you so much! As a person with mental illnesses that make exercising difficult for me, I appreciate you and your content for making it seem less daunting and more accessible. I’ve been trying to do 20 squats and five deep squats plus a minute long plank every day for the past month or so. So far I’ve managed to do it maybe once or twice per week, but it’s something! Part of my struggle is that I HATE feeling sweaty. It’s a sensory issue for me, but it’s not as simple as taking a shower after because showers take a lot of mental energy for me. I’m working on it, though.

Not sure if you know who Herschel Walker is, he was one of the best college Running backs of his time. Also had insane strength. Before he started going to the gym, he got really strong by doing push ups and bodyweight exercises during commercials when he'd watch tv. Something like that might be a good way to get started. You shouldn't get too sweaty doing a few bodyweight excercises every 20 minutes or so

Go for a walk, try to do a light jog every now and then. Watch how quickly your body wants to stop running, that lets you know a lot. A lot of people want to look better, but it's far more important to be in shape and active, than to look how you wish.

I know this isn't needed, but I recommend anyone to try an indoor rock climbing gym. It's the only form of workout that I have ever found enjoyable and even addicting to do. It's like a mind puzzle that you solve with strength, balance, and technique. All of which you naturally gain just by trying. If you're like me at all, it'll change your life.

I have an idea/request, can you do a "total core" video? Good exercises for the whole deal: lateral motion, rotation, front/back/sides/what all qualifies as your core, etc. If you have a strong core and the coordination to apply it, that straightforwardly benefits every other aspect of controlling your body. I bet a comprehensive, scalable core workout is the perfect place to start for general fitness, especially for people starting out, who maybe aren't inclined to spend the time or effort on all sorts of exercises. Like, selling people on exercise with the idea being, "ok, just do one area of the body to start with." In a few weeks they'll probably be more inclined and better able to exercise the rest of the body.

Worth mentioning here: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SPOT-REDUCING FAT! (unless you use a knife) Burning calories will slowly reduce ALL fat proportionally around your body. Training abs will make them bigger and stronger so they show through despite higher body fat %s. That’s why strongmen get super visible abs after a short cut even though they’re still huge.

Don’t forget to also mention that once the body creates a fat cell, it never gets rid of it. The body uses fat cells as energy storage. So when you lose weight in fat, it will be easier to gain it back because of the already-present fat cells. Hope this helps 😊

@@samuelking4723 I took a class on metabolism, this is true and makes sense from a survival standpoint, as fat is extra nutrient storage capacity. It is possible to lose those cells, but the body really doesn't want to, so your average exercise routine and diet will reduce the size of those cells, but is unlikely to actually reduce their number.

Your videos have been very helpful for me lately. I messed myself up while skiing in February and have been out of physical therapy for about 3 weeks and I have been trying to strengthen my body more especially my injured shoulder and these videos have been helping for sure. Well, depending on what objective you train for, it can be much easier to do so using weights or other specific equipment ^^ But overall, it is indeed possible (even easy) to maintain really good condition with no or minimal equipment.

My best abs were usable and came from indoor climbing... I got them in a month and it was the only time in my whole life this happened 😅 I still had some tummy fat...but the core was another story... also my clumsiness minimize a lot👍 Sadly I moved out and there's not a climbing place near me anymore I'll try this!

There's actually one more thing to know about. Your abs visibility also depends on tendons "wrapped" around your abs, how tight and at which parts it is. That is why u can see so many different kinds of "packs" people have

Don't forget about rotational. Flexion(compression) and anti rotational/flexion are great and will definitely get you there, but if you're looking for more variety rotational is great too such as Russian twists which is one of my favorite ab exercises. Just more ideas for functional abdominal building!

Doing compound excercises like OHP, Squat, Deadlift, RDL without belt is also good. I think u should only use best when ur maxing out
