Agree 110% with this. I've been saying for years that if the Jedi had allowed Anakin to openly speak of his love for Padme he'd have gone to Obi-Wan or Yoda instead of Palpatine for help.

He did go to Yoda, and in the novelization at least he spent weeks in the library at the Jedi Temple looking for anything that could help him save Padme. So Palpatine really wasn't his first resort. However, I do agree that the Jedi should have allowed attachments and relationships. Humans naturally need to have connections and attachments to other humans, and they're usually quite beneficial. Indeed, in wartime, people are far more more likely to fight to protect their families and loved ones then in defense of some government or political system.

Don’t you know how some people put on a front some Jedi would like that Obi-Wan secretly had attachments in Star Wars legends in the novel the clone wars wild space Obi-Wan realized that Yoda was wrong about attachments In the novel Obi-Wan uses his love for his former master and former Padawan to resist the temptation of the Darkside
@RichardSmith-nd9vk
@RichardSmith-nd9vk 3 ай бұрын
But if he obeyed the rules there would be no attachment and there wouldn't be a problem. That is backwards logic about his mother too. As he admitted, if Anakin didn't have an attachment to his mother, he wouldn't have needed to save her. Then he goes on to say "but then-" but no, it stops there. It's a sucky rule, and it does limit their force power potential. I don't want to day dream about being a Jedi with no attachments, I want a wife and family. I'm not saying it should be a rule either. But, you have to admit when they are right it caused problems in these instances.
@wishbone346
@wishbone346 3 ай бұрын
@@RichardSmith-nd9vk It was the secrecy that caused the problems, not the attachment. Attachment is a normal emotion for sapient beings. Attachment is what allowed Luke to get through to Vader and redeem him, and what gave him the drive to save the galaxy. Palpatine would've succeeded with or without Anakin. He was one step ahead of the Jedi at every point. Heck, if it hadn't been for finding Anakin on Tatooine the Sith likely wouldn't have been revealed until after the events of Phantom Menace, and the Jedi would've been even more in the dark. There's also a lot of battles in the Clone Wars that would've gone much worse without Anakin being there too.

"Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden. Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi's life. So you might say, that we are encouraged to love.” This great line from Anakin, used to help him get into Padme's panties, contains some rather prophetic wisdom. Compare this to Yoda's statement as he communes with Qui Gon's ghost at the end of the ROTS novelization: "Love is the answer to the darkness." It's a revelation to Yoda -- a piece of wisdom he has never known in 800 years, but finally, in the aftermath of the Jedi Order's destruction, he LEARNS. Yoda and the Jedi Order were wrong about love attachment, pure and simple. However, they may have been well-served in their forbidding of all other attachments...
@englishlady9797
@englishlady9797 3 жыл бұрын
Love attachment does not simply mean romantic or sexual love though. There is also familial love, basically the nature of Anakin's love for Ahsoka Tano, whom he regarded as a little sister, or Obi Wan and Anakin's attachment to Qui-Gonn whom they both sort of regarded as a father.

If Anakin could have turned to Yoda that day he almost wished he could tell him but instead dodged around it with the generalize question..if he could have told Yoda he was engaged and afraid of losing Padme, he could have gotten some REAL good advice and considering his importance, double the reason why Yoda would have gone to the archives himself to find remember that a thing called force healing exists..find a Jedi who has learned it or tell Anakin, give him access so he learns it himself(not easy but hey, peace of mind that there IS a way). The Jedi Order forbid these relations though, which meant that the moment Anakin said a word, he would be kicked out, effectively losing his job/room/livelihood...yeah he could go to the rich wife that is Queen of an entire planet but still, as a man he probably felt that's not an answer, plus he also WANTED to be a Jedi, he loved being able to go around the galaxy helping people or saving them.........there was no one he could turn to to ask for help, that's the problem here. And of course, no Force Healing would be necessary because the vision was of Padme feeling heartache because of Anakin turning 'evil', which obviously he did not know.

This sin't a flaw in the Jedi, at least not in what the Jedi SHOULD be ideally. During the Clone Wars, ABSOLUTELY is it a huge flaw. They had become arrogant, detached and unaware of the real dangers around them. They chose to ignore things like emotions rather than teach to control them. They saw themselves as the most righteous, pure and correct being, so much so that they stopped to consider the deeper meanings behind the Jedi Code. It isn't about ignoring emotions, it's to control them. To not let yourself become a slave to them. But this isn't what the Jedi are supposed to be, but what they had become. Yoda himself realized all the mistakes after the Jedi Order's defeat and his exile into Dagobah.

Having emotions is a natural part of any living thing even animals have them, the Jedi were INSANELY wrong to deny emotions. Yes emotions can cloud judgement,but they can give you great focus to accomplishing a task. Palpatine understood this as in revenge of the sith Palpatine even says "I can feel your anger it gives you focus makes you stronger" so emotions can be very useful it's when you allow them to dominate all of your actions it becomes a problem. This was the Jedi's biggest downfall.
@englishlady9797
@englishlady9797 3 жыл бұрын
The other thing I think is that the Jedi used the "emotions cloud your judgement" thing to justify their own complacency and moral failings. If say, a Padawan got into trouble on a mission, their Master would often use the "no attachments" or "emotions cloud your judgement" as an excuse for abandoning them. Or take the case of Ahsoka Tano. Anakin was told to simply "let go of his emotions" when she as falsely accused of a terrorist attack, and accept he judgement of the council. If he'd done that, she would have been executed. He stood by his friend to the end, and proved her innocence, and I think in that situation he was in the right.
@wyzemann
@wyzemann 7 жыл бұрын
Could it be that Anakin's & Darth Vader's lives were a metaphor for the failure of both the Jedi and Sith to not adhere to the living Force and it's will? Consider Anakin was a failure as a Jedi Knight, and Vader could never become the full and ultimate embodiment of the Sith due to his entrapment by his past. Perhaps the Force was manifesting an example to all future Force sensitives about the utter waste and failure of an imbalanced interpretation/use of the Force.

I like to see it as Luke recognizing where Anakin had failed. Anakin didn't know how to handle his emotions, Palpatine was the only person he could be honest with and Palpatine is... Palpatine, evil incarnate. Palpatine wanted Luke to try and kill the two of them, that's why Palpatine believed Luke was there, to assassinate the Emperor. But that's not why Luke was there, he wanted to save his Father, and he shouldn't lose sight of that. He was there not out of an action of hatred towards the Emperor, but rather and act of compassion for his father.

The 5th point is the closest to being "right," to me. I think the rest really miss the point. By doing the "there is no emotion," the Jedi were attempting to suppress very natural feelings - at least in humans. (We don't, honestly, know much about the other alien races.) This is... maybe... fine if you're stuck in a temple from the time you're 5 'til you die, but then you go out and meet people. They should, basically, have been taught how to *handle* their emotions. Not just "learn to lose them, be glad they're with the force," but "Grieving is fine. It hurts, it's hard, but you will make it through. Accept it, but don't let it control you," essentially. Yes, there's the whole "split loyalty" issue when it comes, say, to Jedi with family (which seemed less of an issue in earlier bits of lore,) but with Jedi being able to be... well, full people, being angry, upset, happy or afraid wouldn't be such a weakness to throw them off balance. (Then again, this could well have been decades of subtle manipulation via the Sith to change that to create that very weakness.)

Exactly. I think the whole Jedi Order was a manipulation to gain loyal soldiers.

I put this in a Quora answer earlier, and I may repeat it here. The "let go of those you fear to lose, rejoice at those who become one with the Force" is only really good advice in wartime, and even then, only for someone actively involved in combat. Otherwise, it makes a person either complacent, or totally cold and unfeeling. Take it this way. A Jedi's Padawan gets into trouble on a mission, and instead of helping them, he or she just leaves them. That Padawan ends up getting captured, tortured and turned to the Dark Side out of the sheer physical pain and torment. Now, the Padawan would often be blamed for their own fall, for being "weak", but it was in fact their Master abandoning them that caused it. The other instances would be great moral or social injustices. Jedi often ignored or turned a blind eye to these, because of the "not being emotionally involved" rule. Its also really just the ultimate form of fatalism. If following Jedi advice, Anakin should not have sought any medical assistance for Padme because if she dies, she dies and that's just that, and if the baby dies, well unfortunate, but that just happens too. Rejoice! Er nope. That's 3 people there. I'd do anything I could to save them.

This calls to mind a Buddhist concept from the Theravada tradition, called Mettā, usually translated as "loving kindness" and sometimes, "Love without attachment," A kind of love that one feels for all sentient beings. According to this concept, one feels a great, and even overwhelming in a sense, compassion for a given being, yet the practitioner does not feel a sense of personal ownership. Such a person would expend every effort to safeguard the well-being of a person they felt was in peril, yet would be happy enough for this person to go on their way afterwards, perhaps never to be seen again. When the Jedi teach against attachment, I believe it is this selfish sense of personal ownership that we often extend to those that we love, to which they refer. Giving up the sense of ownership, doesn't necessarily mean giving up the love. Since this is a somewhat difficult accomplishment, a practitioner is initially taught detachment from clinging, and only afterwards is this followed by cultivating a great sense of compassion. Given the state that we find ourselves in, It's not a normal feeling, which is why it must be actively cultivated. This is why, I believe, that it makes sense that young Jedi often have great difficulty in accepting this kind of teaching. They are unaware of how powerful this sense of love without attachment can be, because they haven't had the opportunity to properly cultivate it, therefore, their normal unrestrained emotions seem incomparably powerful.

Yeah, except that this would lead to extremely unhealthy and exploitative sexual relationships. You literally just get what you want from each other, then go your separate ways. Which is why visiting prostitutes was not against the Jedi rules on attachments, but getting married was.
@englishlady9797
@englishlady9797 3 жыл бұрын
The other problem is that the Jedi came to interpret the "no emotional attachment" rule in such a way as to excuse their own complacency, moral failures, and stop people from questioning their judgement. When a Padawan was in trouble, they used the "control your emotions" rule to justify abandoning them to their fate, and of course, famously told Anakin to do with with Ahsoka when she was falsely accused of that terrorist attack.

@@englishlady9797 I can't see how a relationship where both parties get what they want is exploitative, unless your assumption is that one of the parties is incapable of making a free, rational choice that is in their own self interest. It's also probably a good idea not to confuse your own sexual morays with what is unhealthy. Different cultures, and indeed different species, as in the Starwars universe, have different sexual norms and shouldn't necessarily be confined to those acceptable to 21st century humans.

This is probably what makes making a Jedi OC so hard without them coming off as a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. By that I mean the original characters are almost always Grey Jedi who don't align with either the Jedi or the Sith and probably don't like them, because sometimes the Jedi and Sith are too extreme. Like that one old guy on Kashyyk in KoTOR. The Jedi, at least at that point in time, were supposed just follow orders and have no emotions like droids. Being sassy like Obi-Wan is probably the more original thing you can do with those rules holding you back. Other than that its just minor adjustments to how they react and think, and what they're good at. The Sith often come off as... petty. Too much stereotypical "Evil overlord trying to take over the universe" stuff. Has there ever been someone who used only the Dark Side, but did so for a greater cause that they perceived as righteous? Because off the top of my head I can only think of Sith who wanted power for the sake of power (also immortality). A "good Sith"? Starkiller being the only exception. Hell, I tried coming up with a Jedi OC and found myself unable to make him anything other than a Grey Jedi because I didn't like either side. So I instead made 'em into a Force Sensitive rich asshole, who never received any formal training and decided to become a cyborg because I'm a General Grievous fanboy both in-universe and out.
@redhandsbluefaces
@redhandsbluefaces 7 жыл бұрын
A "good" Sith is pretty much a Grey Jedi. The Dark Side of the Force corrupts the user, which is what leads them to wanting selfish goals and power for themselves, and eliminating everyone in their way. The Sith Code itself edifies this. The only way to use the Dark Side to do good is to combine it with the light, hence, a Grey Jedi. Or, you can be like Windu and channel Dark Side energy into a weapon of light, which is also an ability only Grey Jedi can use. I myself believe Grey Jedi are by far the most powerful Force users, and this is proven by GM Luke Skywalker and Kyle Katarn in Legends, as well as Revan in KOTOR. Using good emotions such as love, joy, happiness, affection, friendship, etc to make you more powerful to serve a greater cause is key to achieving true power.

Dirk Schwartz I mean what if Dooku did something to Maul's homeworld when he was young and hold a grudge against him ever since. And if Dooku was with Jinn instead of Kenobi, Maul would have killed Jinn in front of Dooku simply to hurt him --- and then leaves to fight for another day. Thus they would have a bitter rivalry in the Clone Wars series. And if Asajj stayed a Jedi, she could have met Ahsoka and the two could have created a sisterly bond. So when Asajj left to become a Sith, the two would have serious quarrels in the Clone Wars series, but the they would never try to kill each other.

Feelings and Attachments are like what happened to the New Sith (rule of two) and the Jedi. Because they had no knowledge or experience in how to deal with them, they got the better of them. Feelings and especially attachments also give people something to fight for. Think about it, what would you rather defend, your family and loved ones, or a corrupt political entity and government? No wonder some people just gave them the finger, or chose their families.

In 'Attack of the Clones' Anakin explains Padme that the Jedi rely on compassion to do everything they do.... Compassion is an emotion. The most important emotion I believe. So that is a contradiction to the pretension of the order to avoid all emotions. To feel attachment for somebody or something is unavoidable. All Jedi were attached to the Jedi Order and its doctrines. Maybe Yoda or even the Jedi code refers to attachments based on selfish emotions. Compassion is a selfless emotion and maybe that's why that emotion was at the center of the Jedi philosophy. Maybe.

This is just my own opinion/theory. I have not read all of the EU (aka "Legends"), or played all the games, but what I have seen and read, it seems that the attachment thing was misinterpreted by the Jedi. I have felt that in light of all the Jedi/force users turned Sith when the Sith were in far greater numbers that that was added to the Jedi code as not a literal ban on attachment. To me it meant for Jedi to be aware of their emotions and to keep them in check ( to keep themselves balanced) to avoid the negative consequences of giving into run away emotion. It seems to me that the rule was taken more literal after the Sith were defeated (when Bane started the rule of two and Sith kept a low profile), as to avoid a Sith reemergence, as the peace time went on. I think that is the problem with some of the rules of jedi that seem wrong or controversial is that they are taken too literally, far more than they were meant to be, instead of listening to the force to help them interpret it. Anyway, that's just one fan's thoughts; thank you for reading if you read the whole thing!

Your points are well made, however there are aspects of attachment that you may be overlooking. If one ascribes to the theory that Lucas’ treatment of the death of Padme and the creation of Darth Vader was intended to show how Anakin, in his anger and hatred, drew on Padme’s life force through their Force bond to save himself from death, or Darth Sidious manipulated the Force bond between Padme and Anakin to save Anakin’s life, then we begin to see dangers in having attachments and specifically with those who have not been trained in the Force arts who are unable protect themselves from such abuse of the Force. Palpatine set up the circumstances for the bond between Padme and Anakin to be formed. This was partially because of Anakin’s obsession with Padme and partially to get revenge on her for setting back his original plan to control Naboo. Palpatine also knew of the bond between Anakin and his mother and capitalized upon it. He had the Sandpeople kidnap and torture but not kill his mother to haunt Anakin’s dreams and unbalance him. The other attachment that Anakin had was with Palpatine. Anakin confides in and defends Palpatine again and again. This is how Palpatine was able to use sort of a Sith version of the Jedi mind trick to get Anakin to accept nearly everything that Palpatine said as truth and ultimately how Anakin was deceived into becoming Palpatine’s apprentice. Without this attachment, Palpatine would have had little influence over Anakin. The rest of your observations about attachments seem valid. A better path for the Jedi to have taken with their younglings would have been to educate them on the dangers of attachment and allow them to decide for themselves whether they would have attachments or not. But, to the Jedi, to do so would have been educating the younglings in what they considered to be the dark side of the Force, so the obvious choice for the code-bound later Jedi was simply to prohibit attachment.

On Number 2, Vader had foreseen that if he tortured Han, Leia and Chewie that Luke would try rescue them. If Luke had been willing to stay and finish his training, and not tried to rescue them, then Vader would likely have foreseen a different outcome and not pursued the Millennium Falcon with such abandon. Their futures were unclear.

I loved this video. This is one of the many reasons Obi-Wan is so interesting to me. I have always felt his highest points as a Jedi have come when he was filled with emotion (duels with both Maul and Anakin). Which makes me wonder about the Maul/Kenobi scene coming up in Rebels. As many, myself included are probably hoping Maul survives this encounter and still has a part to play in things... Could this maybe be one of the few times Obi-Wan doesn't use his emotions during a significant fight? As I'm sure he is feeling something after Maul killed Satine, right in front of him. Is this maybe the turning point where he becomes the more serene Obi-Wan we see in A New Hope? Case in point I'm pretty stoked for this scene and its impact on the future of Star Wars. What do you think?

One thing I thought of was that while Qui-Gon and Obi-wan were fighting Maul, the two Jedi took a team tactic against Maul. This would lead to Obi-wan taking a less aggressive role in the fight and following Qui-Gon's lead. Once qui-gon was dead Obi-wan had to change his approach because now it was a 1 on 1 fight.

Can you do Part 2 for "What if Mace Windu Fought Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith?". It is a older one but it was great! Keep up the awesome work!

Luke was mostly right. The Jedi failed his father due to their arrogance and outdated rules.

I totally agree! Exactly! All the more reason why I ultimately admire the Gray Jedi Code 😁

The Jedi order is flawed in many ways. Just watching the clone wars series and how they did Ashoka proves it...

I agree 100%. Many jedi were hypocrits saying u cant get attached to people. And then they got attached to people, lol they might have hid the attachment, but non the less we have seen them in mourning.(If you are not attached it will not bother you if anything signifigant happens to someone). Like in season 6 episode 12 of the clone wars when yoda was doing his trial for immortality, he sees a hallucination of ahsoka dying, and he actualy gets sad. Even the main jedi on the counsel telling everyone not to get attached was attached to a few people.

I'd make a terrible Jedi. That code sounds a bit too cultish for my liking.

What if Yoda himself made bad experiences with attachments. Referring to stairways the clone wars when he talks about the dark side Yoda, maybe a relationship lead to that. This could be a reason why Yoda is against attachments.

I agree, attachments are needed for a jedi, and should not be forbidden. Without attachments a person just becomes cold and detached, with nothing to fight for, nothing to live for. Attachments help a person to fight harder, and it strengthens the light. "The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back. Love is more than a candle. Love can ignite the stars"

Because Dooku was not a Sith. He just used the darkside all the time but used it for good and wanted to shape a new order but not the way Palpatine wanted. He still had good morales. Dooku was more of a political opponent.
