My aunt worked in a burn unit. Much of this reminds me of the stories she would tell. Burns are a horrible thing to recover from. When it came time to scrub the dead skin away, they would load the patients up with morphine, but to little effect. Many burn victims become addicted to pain killers through no fault of their own. I would not wish burns on my worst enemy.
@speedracer2008 Жыл бұрын
That sounds horrible. I’m sorry that her patients had to deal with that. I can’t imagine how much pain Vader felt from his burns, if the burns your aunt’s patients experienced were already pretty bad.
@arthurfleck629 Жыл бұрын
@@speedracer2008Yes, his burns were absolutely horrific, pretty much everybody experiences pain differently but being burned is quite the constant in that it’s described by nearly everyone as being a 10/10 on the pain factor, just about nothing else hurts as much as being set on fire, it’s horrific. Plus, he was lying on that volcanic embankment for multiple hours, at least 2 or 3 hours, Palpatine was no where near Mustafar when he sensed Vader was in danger and needed help, so his chest became massively scarred from lying face down. And perhaps most disturbing of all, lying like that on rock that hot actually gave him 4th degree burns, which is the absolute worst it can get, the burns penetrate so deep they burn muscle and organ tissue, destroying that tissue or at least destroying enough of it that it often means the entire organ needs to be removed. 3rd degree burns don’t hurt because they destroy the nerves and sometimes even the entire nerve fibres, but 4th degree burns would be excruciating, muscle and organ tissue is directly connected to and absolutely filled with nerve endings, hence why working out and destroying your muscle tissue lifting weight is painful. Vader was cooked alive for hours, and if Palpatine never turned up, eventually he’d just have been burnt and cooked entirely, not a single part of his body would function, so if he’d somehow survive that, and survive the brutal surgery, he’d be just like General Grievous was, 95 - 98% cyborg.

I do empathize with Vader/Anakin. He is nothing but a mislead and emotional child of slavery. The Jedi failed him where the Sith did not. This lead to him being easily corrupted. Every Jedi on the council knew of his ever-growing fears, and his easily turned on anger and hatred. Due to his slavery he was prone to these negative/darkside emotions vs the Jedi's pretty much 0 emotion. Anakin had visions of his mother calling out to him help, but the Jedi did nothing. Obi-Wan saying it is nothing more than a nightmare of a boy who is missing his mother. After the last dream Anakin could no longer take it, and went to check on his mother, to his horror, was tortured and then died from the wounds. Obi-Wan failed Anakin, and therein the seeds of doubt towards the Jedi was planted. His hate for Obi-Wan, I would say, started at this moment not the others. Despite never having been acknowledged. But we know this to be true since his next vision of Padme dying he reacted to immediately and eventually succumbed to the darkside. He never wanted to lose anyone ever again and sought out any means to prevent this from happening anymore. The Jedi also don't care about the lives of anyone. Whenever a Jedi, or a person is in trouble they end up leaving them behind to suffer death if it means their goals are accomplished. Every time they could have taught Anakin to be a better person, every time they could have turned the tides of his battle with the darkside they kept on failing him. Yoda telling him not to fear, nor to miss those he loves who has died probably tortured him mentally. He can't do that. The Jedi neglected him and decided NOT to take the necessary steps to prevent him from succumbing to his hatred, to his fear and to his anger. All the things Palpatine managed manipulate. Anakin Skywalker was tossed aside to the wayside by the Jedi immediately after being found and given promises of a better life, despite how challenging it will be. He wasn't given the proper care or love to grow into a more stable adult. The Jedi should have never let their doubts of Anakin get in the way of raising and training the boy. He is the result of a neglectful Jedi council.

I can empathize with Vader in respects to how he felt depressed, and at times angry, with his body's limitations. I am a retired Marine and a disabled Veteran. I broke my back on active duty and was forced to retire after 20 years. I would have done 30 if I could have. While I am not paralyzed, I can walk and obviously by typing I can use my hands, my mobility is greatly limited. One of my favorite past times is woodworking. But, I can only do it occasionally. Cutting the grass on my small lawn is a three day affair. One day to cut it and two more barely able to move from the pain throughout my body. I am on enough high strength opioids to put the average person to sleep for a full day. And I take them 3 times a day. I understand his depression at not being able to do the things he once could, or at least the difficulties that these activities now present. I also understand his anger. The frustration at not being able to do the things I love most leads me to be angry at the very things I love most quite often. My situation has even eroded a marriage of 34 years to the point of simply living with someone who used to be my best friend. So, in summation, I think that I and others like myself who have been brought low by the ravages of war, understand Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker very well.

And in no way was that attributed to politicians or so called advocates for this agenda or that. It wholly fell on men (and women) like you. Even more amazing if otherwise you’d find my life disagreeable to your sentiments. Regardless, you protected me and gave me the chance to exist in relative peace and safety. For all the suffering you are enduring, I hope that that small truth helps you endure and rise above your pains. Thank you for your service. I’m 28, but when I was 11 I had a bad fall, broke my tailbone and “shocked my spine,” and within a year I was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition. Within three years I was housebound. For about two years I was mostly bed-bound. Once I started improving, I was often in so much pain I would physically shake. I couldn’t sit, I’d pace until I was exhausted because I couldn’t sit or rest in that much pain. I’d have migraines that could last over a week, in my room with blacked out windows, listening to audiobooks on the lowest level possible, eating meals in the dark. At least getting thirty injections in my face, head and neck, every four months keeps those from being my normal experience now. Last year I started fighting back again. I got a treadmill and was so embarrassed. I couldn’t walk five minutes at 1mph without needing a break. My back would seize up and it was hard to breathe because the chest wall muscles would clamp down; it was physically difficult to be able to breathe like that. I wouldn’t drive, because I’d have maybe thirty seconds of warning before an attack like that could happen, and I couldn’t keep my eyes open, much less drive in that kind of pain. I’m slowly starting to be able to add time; I can do 25 minutes a day if it’s in five mini-walks, and I’m at 2.2mph now. It’s going to take forever and be embarrassing and frustrating, but eventually I’ll find a way to claw my way out of the pit that is currently my physical life. I will never be younger and I’ll never have more of a chance than now. Of course now I’m also dealing with Lupus, which is a complication. My body can randomly decide to attack various organs and systems. If I do even the slightest thing to stress or injure myself, it’s weeks before the runaway inflammation calms down enough for me to attempt to continue. I think... because it’s not “normal,” chronic pain is seen as weird and “other” by a lot of people. It’s assumed you actually aren’t in as much pain, but you just don’t cope as well as normal people. Or that you’re a drug seeker. Or that you want attention and sympathy. I don’t wish ill on anyone, and I’d certainly never want them to live with chronic pain. But I do wish there was a way they could walk in the shoes of someone who has to fight, every day, just to retain some mobility and independence. Who has to be looked at like they’re addicts when all they want is to just be able to keep their pain at a level that they can hold down a job or be able to cross a room or to sleep at night, instead of waking any time they move, pain hitting them before they open their eyes. I wish... empathy was more of a thing. Because as sad as Anakin’s story is, there are people in horrific pain every day without proper treatment, no hope of a cure, knowing they’ll live in this much pain for however long it takes for life to kill them. And these are real people, who didn’t betray an order or kill Younglings or try to take over the universe. One does not have to look to a galaxy far, far, away to find stories of horrific suffering. If people with chronic pain had our own country we’d be the single most populated one in the WORLD. We’re not a few random maladapted people. I hope you have some people in your life that understand your chronic pain and situation. Chronic pain sucks, and it sucks more if you have to go through it alone. If you don’t have anyone, maybe ponder looking at some resources to get in touch with other people who get it, that you don’t feel like you have to ignore your reality or explain it. We’re a nation of people; we’ve got to look out for each other. And again, thank you for serving.

I think Vader, after the prequels and the following novels, becomes a character you are supposed to fear but also pity. His depression, anger, sorrow, and possibly regret are all things we all feel throughout our lives and he has become the embodiment of all of those things. The only relief brought to him by his son, Luke, when Luke showed him that he did not need to live like this anymore. A part of Padme lived on within Luke and so did Obi-Wan's teachings but also so did a part of Anakin. Anakin was still alive and Vader was then finally defeated and Anakin allowed himself to finally rest. To die.

In response to Cookie mon, that is exactly what I was going to say. It was Anakin's to cling onto that fear and hatred, it was Anakin's choice to follow Palpatine. It was Anakin's choice to murder those younglings. It was Anakin's chioce to murder Windu in cold blood. It was Anakin's choice not to come to his senses on Mustafar and return to Obi-Wan Luke was put in a similar situation (though not a slave, he had a pretty miserable couple of years). It was Luke's choice to die rather than join his father (though he didn't die, that's what he had intended). It was Luke's choice to not to strike down Sidious and be possessed. It was Luke's choice not to join the Dark Side, but fight it with every last breath in him. It was Luke's choice not to go down the path of the Dark Side when his Aunt and Uncle were murdered by stormtroopers. It was Luke's choice not to give into the lure of the dark side on Auch-To (yes, I know I spelled that wrong, but I don't feel like googling it rn). It was Luke's choice not to strike down his nephew while he slept (in that scenario is was Ben who made the choice to turn to the Dark Side, not confront his master about what had happened that night). Anakin's and Luke's choices was what differentiated them, and why I don't sympathize with Vader in all his suffering. (though I love the suit design, super slick)

That one hell of a deep and complicated character. One theory I have about Vader's armor. When Anakin was first put into the armor it was probably up to date technology, but over the 30+ years he was inside the armor it was never updated. So over the years Vader aged but the armor stayed the same. So I don't think it had anything to do with power, just the simple reason of Palpatine not upgrading the suit (nomatter if it had anything to do with power or being controlled). Not being upgraded and the fact he possibly still had love for his wife, Padme and seeing his kids after all this time could be another reason that he turned away from the dark side of the force.

In reading this, even though it was composed several years ago, I agree with you! I think at times he was always tempted in one way or another. As a true warrior, he probably was hoping to find someone who was stronger, more skilled and triumphant in defeating him honorably, as most warriors prefer in battle. The irony of course was it wasn't the hate that conquered or destroyed him putting an end to his life, it was the opposite. The love he had for his own lineage, it's rather an interesting dichotomy.

I empathize with vader, he's one of my favorite characters in star wars. From sweet smart impoverished boy,to caring friend and husband..coming up only to be plagued by his past and manipulated for what he can do to the point he loses everything. Not only loses everything but is turned into a nightmarish existence. I understand that fully and honestly the collective writings and film making that have gone into telling predominantly his story is brilliant and epic. Anyone that ONLY sees him as a bad guy hasnt ben paying attention,or hasnt ever had to go through such a level of hell in life that they understand. Needless to say these videos on the topic are very well made.👏

You know, as a young kid, I really was drawn to Anakin Skywalker. Of course at that time I was too young to really understand the fears and frustrations he had, and I kinda felt his turn to the dark side was too easy. One thing that has always dissapointed me, is i feel as if darth vader is not shown in the films to be powerful enough. The way hes looked at and talked of by other characters in the series itself is never really done any justice to how powerful he truly was. I wish they would make a VADER film showing this. I think that would be really awesome
@ThallanarRabidtooth4 жыл бұрын
Well, at least in the original trilogy, the people you see kinda bullying Vader never really saw his true power, even if force choking people was intimidating enough for most of them, they never truly experienced the full power of the Force. After all, even if Darth Sidious was the mastermind behind the Death Star, it was thousands of people under employ during the reign of the Galactic Empire that ran day to day operations, and the people who were at the head of their departments became narcissistic, greedy and egotistical. They thought to themselves "This Vader guy is just a pawn of the Emperor, he is way below us, who actually do the real work."

I think it would have been possible for him in less than a minute, he also had time to blame him and all. I also don't think it's the Jedi way to cut limbs off your former student and then let him suffer, because he now can't use a light saber anymore, even if he turned to the dark side. He probably felt extremely bad and wanted to save his idea of being moral by at least not killing him directly.

It's so much more powerful to think of Vader in this way, when you imagine the young, ambitious Anakin in his prime from the clone wars, being forced to live in such a way. As you had quoted; "This is not living." Me personally; I would much sooner choose death of the most gruesome sort than to suffer the fate of Lord Vader.

It explains why Vader moves and acts the way he does. Not only does his constant pain make him more rageful, but it also explains why he moves so intimidatingly; he picks up his feet and walks with a great stride because he has to. Incidentally, while in real life Vader's helmet was based on a Samurai mask, I wonder if in-universe, the Emperor had it made in to look like a Sith hood. It flares and hangs over his eyes just like Sidious's hood does, and save for the fact that it's trimmed around his neck to allow for movement, it even looks like a hood shaped specifically for his mask. It would also make sense that Palpy would give his mask the visage of a hood, to replace his ability to wear a proper robe.
