If you had a friend for a while, but feel something is off, chances are your friend might actually be toxic friends. Toxic friendships are actually more common than you think. Toxic friends may end up betraying you when you need them most. If you are wondering if all my friends are toxic, then this video may be for you. However, if none of these signs are there, then maybe, you have a real friend. Real friends are hard to find, so treasure them when you do have them. Real friends will look after your mental health when you need them most.
DISCLAIMER: If you can relate to any of these signs, please do not take this feedback as an attack on your character. This video was meant to be a self-improvement guide for those of you who have been feeling a little stuck."

Indeed. It's important to know how different people influence our well-being, and of course how we influence theirs - and make choices that lead toward the life we want, the state of mental and emotional health we're aiming for. Find people who are good for you, and be good to them - or if you're especially brave, try changing the pattern with people who struggle to be constructive about relationships, _but_ in the latter case... be prepared to say, at some point, "I tried, and it didn't work. They don't seem interested. Time to move on." It's not your job to fix anyone else. It's often impossible. We can try to help nudge people in a good direction, but if they're not going with it, it won't work. First and foremost, we can control who we are and how we treat people... then, with a little luck, that can inspire others to follow suit.^^

You grow up in a toxic family and you are involved in so many toxic and abusive situations, so you start searching for love in the wrong places and you let people treat you like shit because you start to adapt to it. I recognize that I do some of the mentioned sometimes, but the difference is I am willing to change but my friend seems doesn't… And she has many friends who seem like she is of the center attention so it’s a bit hard to open up. With her friend group last year, I observed that they’re a type of just-fun-group and do gossip.

I feel very sad, after watching this video I have realized that my friends do all of these things, I have had some amazing fun times with them but no matter what it feels like the next day, someone will do something mean, like bringing up past fights and laughing at someone’s insecurities when some one does this it makes anybody else want to do the same to them so it is an infinite cycle of toxic-ness. I have realized I might have been doing these things in response to my friends toxic behavior, this year one of my best friends is moving away, and I want to fix things in my friend group before then. Thank you for helping me realize this, your videos are super helpful❤❤, hopefully now me and my friends might be able to salvage our relationship 😮‍💨

I feel that, dude. Had friends from JHS and up, back during my "class clown" phase of life. I legit let them go like maybe 6 months ago after years of feeling like shit around them. When I was younger, I didn't get a lot of attention at home, so I acted out in school, got a reputation for wild and unpredictable behavior. That reputation followed me into High School, College and finally adulthood. It was around early adulthood I really started to notice how different my older "friends" treated me... almost like a sideshow or an interesting oddity than a real friend. Anytime I expressed a dynamically unique opinion, I was met with silence. They were obsessed with being relevant and politically correct and would often shame me if it meant looking good in front strangers, even. The pandemic, like with everyone else, really showed me how they regard me and even after, with the vax mandates and that, I felt honestly like they weren't even my friends. I'm not even antivaxx, but the way they treated mutuals and then me for speaking up for them was just too much. I'm not gonna lie, I'm friendless IRL now. Like you said, though, the reality is that I was alone with people who never really understood me, either. It was hell existing as that quirky friend who was just basically the comic relief for the homies to get laid. I hated that I was always the one traveling to see them, always the one having to adjust my timing and schedule, because their lives were so much more important. Peace is sweet.

Exactly what I’m going through❤after hanging out more with a friend I notice more and more how he sees the world, he went on a long story about how he tips Starbucks workers so that they will give him a good order but he said that after awhile he noticed they got used to him tipping(idk how he noticed this) and that because of this he started going in at a different time than usual so that they won’t get used to his tipping. He told me one day when he walked in one of the workers said, “your here later than usual”, and he said he responded with “I don’t work here” and he told me he had to remind them they were the workers that way. He sounds like he is full of himself tbh but I need opinions.

Exhausting more than upsetting, every time I argue with her she does that circle of not replying to what I said but instead opening another story that's easier for her so she can win the argument, I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHO WINS IT WHY IS SHE ALWAYS JUST CARES ABOUT HER WANTING TO WIN IT, I just want to reach a point with her I don't want some one to lose or win I just want to talk to her but she doesn't care about anything I said she just wants to be satisfied and win the argument :/ Why doesn't she for once reply to me so we can reach a point and end this and finally a video that included "the one that lists your mistakes" bc that's literally her she said many rude stuff to me and when I told her that I think the way she is talking to me is toxic she now in every argument says "well don't talk to me like you are an angel remember that you said I am toxic" and "wow, I am toxic now" l swear I didn't tell her that for the purpose of offense I did it bc I wanted her to be aware of her actions The friend ship was for 5 years Idk if I want it anymore bc It has been now 4 months of me not caring about her anymore, and the main problem in one to one situation is that I don't have any other friends so Idk what to do Pls I need help or an advice....

thank you for this video, i was finally able to see that one of my friends was very controlling, and would rarely let me do anything i enjoyed. it would rarely be about me and only about them. he had a lust for arguing and didnt care what his friends or i had to say, there was just a giant sense of ignorance coming from him. today we got into a heated argument where he put the safety of a game over his own friendship. he thought by deleting my game account, he would be able to save everyone else and when i brought it up to him about it, he said it was because it was mainly me and repeatedly said "if it were anyone else it would have been different." he was very critical about what i did and never ever listened to what i said. and today he just let it all down on me that he was being fake to gain something out of it, an ulterior motive. he never cared, he always said that he would stop caring about everything so he was more "free" and it only made more problems for us and him. i had enough and left the friend group. im still gonna be in contact with my other friends, just not him. hes only there when he needs something. thats why im shutting him out.

1:10 “If your friend can’t stop talking about themselves and their own problems, while not considering your own, then they’re likely not a real friend” Those words hit me a ton for a bunch of reasons.. Well, since kindergarten, i had this friend who I consider my best friend. We are SUPER close. But sometimes when I try to address my problems to her, she goes back to her *own* problems, totally neglecting the fact that I’m dealing with a crisis. I’ve experienced this a lot, but whenever I try to ask someone else about this, they either pressure me to break my friendship between my best friend, or they do a horrible job on giving me advice. I have autophobia, the fear of losing friends, which makes this situation even more harder. I’m afraid that if I lose my best friend, then I’ll get my own karma *somehow.* I don’t really know why though. My best friend has been with me for more than half of my life, and she’s been there for me. But whenever she neglects my problems, it’s really hard to consider her my friend. If you have any advice on what I should do please say :) I would really appreciate it! I hope you have an amazing day/night ❤

In retrospect, not the type of person I should have been friends with anyway... if I was so far beneath what they considered attention-worthy, why not find someone I get along with better? Yes exactly what I mean by true friendships can start online. Anyone telling you that it’s not true just doesn’t know or chooses to ignore this fact. First friendship that actually lasting for over 4 years let alone 3 at a constant basis of communication and conversation trust. Sometimes we make friends in our daily lives (physically) only for convenience. I learned it the hard way. I have been so much happier without the old ex friend that I had no idea what I was doing and really do you really know someone if you have/had no idea what that person was/is doing and what you were/are doing?

She didn't Apologize just excuses of not having time...Working bla bla bla, But I discover that she's chatting with her fiancee all the time. Plus, she now talks to me just if she has problems. I loves them, because I loved our memories and our families are really close. Ive been friends with them for 2-3 years. But everytime I told them, I was uncomfortable. They continued. So i confronted them, they gave no shit and gave the most shittest apology. I was heartbroken, told them. Im done. They started joking about it, but I had this warm fuzzy feeling that I was free, even with a bit of guilt. I dont regret my decision one bit. I started blocking them on everything. Ive made better friends now, I hope you let go of your toxic friendship. If not, I hope they change.

What sucks is that everyone I’ve been close with, has had at least one of these traits listed of them. And I re-watched this to see if I’m like this, and surprisingly I’ve somehow avoided these traits. I always make sure I’m there for my friends as much as their there for me. And I never talk about small problems, it’s not as important as some of the stuff they go through. When I ask questions, I patiently wait to comment and I pay attention best as possible. Some people came to mind during this video because they don’t do these things. Sometimes it feels like they want someone else to come and save them from me. Sometimes they even get mad at me when I’ve done nothing. They talk about me behind my back constantly too. I’m unsure how to fix this yet, but I’ll talk to them.

My so called "best friend" who've I've known since 6th grade (just turned 26 now) has become someone very toxic! I care about him as a friend but after a few failed relationships with some girls, he just gave up on life it seems to me! He gave up working back in 2019, before the pandemic, and refuses to get a job anymore! He's always trying to bum money off friends and family and he gets unemployment pay but he spends his money on weed because he rather be high than to face his problems! I have depression and anxiety too because I come from an abusive household but yet I still do my best to work and actually trying to improve myself! If my friend isn't trying to improve himself then I can't be around someone so negative and who hates everyone and everything!

I used to be a toxic friend when i was a lot younger, like middle school young. I didnt realize it until they pulled me aside and told me in private how it made them feel. I immediately worked on fixing it cause i didnt know what i did was hurting them. To add: idk how much it affects it, but i have a problem where i dont feel sympathy naturally and had to train myself to feel sympathy and empathy. I also have an emotional processing disorder. I still decided i wanted to learn to do better as a friend, so i think there's no excuses. If you're a decent person who wants to do right by their friends you should always work on yourself.

I have this so-called "friend" that does not care about most things about any aspect of both mine and a couple others' lives. I try my best to let my friend group know when I'm truly feeling down, and the only responses I get are just like "oH, wE'rE nOt In A gRoUp", or just straight up ignores the main point and talk about tiny aspects to make it seem like a massive problem, starting arguments that were unnecessary. We've never been friends, but I literally cannot get away from this "friend" because this person is friends with my closest friend, and have been friends with them for over a decade now, and the only reason I still want this person in the friend group is so that I can keep my close friend happy and content. I honestly don't know what to do because if I break the over decade long friendship, I'm worried that I might lose my closest friend that I have had my entire life. Another thing is that this toxic friend's influence is rubbing off of another close friend I have, now starting arguments with me for whatever small detail they deem fit. I honestly don't want to stop being friends with that close friend though because we're both there for each other, just this person is unintentionally (or intentionally idk) ruining the friendship that we built over the years in the blink of an eye. There's only really one other friend that I have who actually agrees with my points and doesn't seem overridden with nostalgia or the fact that this person is like a friend or best friend to others, but the other friend still has to go by with this person's things as to not cause another week long controversy that we've already once had. I honestly don't know what to even do, in a way I should just let it be. However, in another sense, I'm thinking of trying to do something about it. Worst part is, this person is also making my life feel like crap on certain days, like I'm just a stranger for everyone to ignore. I hope something changes with this misery of a routine, having to deal with all this.

All of these happen with My youngest friend. She's really rude. Not only that she put all the blame on me for leaving the friend group. More importantly everyone always gets mad at ME even if I'm not the one who did something wrong. She just gets on my nerves. She's done pretty much all of these examples too me and she just seems like she hates me. Honestly I want to cut off so many friendships rn but don't know how bc either way they'll just complain and be in denial

I've learned from my experiences that if anyone makes you feel badly about your self, they are simply not a friend. İf you don't know how to shut her out place boundaries on this person. Bc you need to take care of yourself first. You haven't done anything to feel badly about, and you are in and out of hospital . How dare this person put more trauma in your life. İt is draining and you need healing. Big hug to you ❤️🌻

@aesthetic_sunflower I'm someone like you too. I worry more about hurting the other person whose hurting my feeling more than myself. But it's not okay for your mental health. You'll constantly feel worse until your self-esteem is depleted to the lowest level. My advice if you want it, is that you should do this for the sake of both your physical and mental health. Nothing is more important than THAT! When you want to confront her, don't think about all the things you want to say. Just let everything out from the bottom of your heart! If you have to close your eyes while speaking, (I've heard it works,) do so. Don't let he/she interrupt you because it will definitely disturb your flow. And if you have to put an end to the "friendship", by all means do so. You'll feel better after

Only problem for me personally is that one of my friends is a psychopath/sociopat (no one really knows, we just know she has few feelings and can't understand others feelings) so some of these doesn't work to check if she is a good friend 😅 but I think she is genuine and just doesn't know how feelings work.

I don’t even need to watch the video to say yes. I had a group of friends from high school who I thought I was really close with. We got along so well and I felt like I could call them family. Then the last day of January they removed all communications with me and I was freaking out because I was so confused to what happened. So I asked another one of the friends in the friend group because something similar happened to her, and when that happened to her I was there for her. To show that I would always be there to support her. And then she wasn’t there for me, after she told me that she would always be there for me, she immediately unfriend and blocked me on all types of social media, even in the video game platforms we played on together. When that happened I felt like my heart actually broke. I was so mentally destroyed and cried for hours until the smell of my tears literally made me sleep. And after 3 and a half months, I still have no closure to why they did this to me. I’ve decided, now that I finished my first year of college that I will go to each of their houses and have a “last talk” if they want to reconcile I would be just friends with them. I could never trust them to be best friends again, but if they want nothing to do with me. Then I will completely let go of them and *just* focus on myself. Edit: sorry I kinda just ranted!

Don't do it. I know what you're going through I've had the same thing happen with both friends and my literal blood siblings (my little brother stole over $1,500 worth of personal items and then just blocked and smeared me to the rest of the family). It literally drove me insane. I spent the past year mentally recovering through bouts of confusion, sadness, rage, etc. The biggest and most torturous part of it was that I couldn't mentally empathize with the level of emotional coldness, I thought I was mistaken, there had to be a reason something I did wrong, etc. I tried to share it with so many people. My irl "friends" who were already horrible emotional support did what they did best: made everything about their wanna be sitcom lives, I started ignoring them and keeping to myself. The family not involved either only sympathized to get things out of me or they straight up would express about the same level of apathy as my friends, leaving me on seen, going quiet or even shaming me for "holding onto the situation". It got to the point where I literally started ruining my own life, nearly went homeless, etc. I decided after my grandmother died recently and that I saw no change to just let it go... Some people aer fucked up but if you go and try and get that "last talk" in? I promise you, you're not gonna get that answer, and you're gonna damage yourself more, by then having to try and fight the urge to prove you're not "crazy". Leg them go. You can make more friends. They'll be good friends or bad, but they'll be new friends. Don't go back to people who don't want you... that won't change their mind, either.

I have an online friend who sometimes disapears for long periods of time without warning and will just show back up like nothing happned. I know that they are going through a lot, live alone and have very few friends but, the inconsistencies in contact are somewhat bringing me down, I care about them a lot and often worry about having done something wrong. When they are around they are nice and kind, they seem to be set on playing up this 'uncaring' persona despite occasionally helping with problems and listening to me. I don't know what to do, I genuinely feel happy and comfortable around them but when they're gone everything feels awful.

They might not be used to be having a lot of interactions with their friends. it could also be that they are very cautious with whom they connect. It probably wouldn't hurt to ask them to see, just don't push it too much. There could be multiple reasons why they are acting the way they are and some of those reasons they may not be comfortable with saying them, especially if they're still getting to know you as a person.

These were some things that I started to realize when I was looking from the outside the box, looking in. These are not necessarily toxic issues individually but they did culminate together that led to a toxic relationship between me and my ex-friend. These were more subtle things I noticed. 1. They WERE engaged in what was going in my life and wanted to know how things were going. They did care which led me to overlook other things. 2. A lot of the times when hanging out or catching up, a lot of the conversations are about them or what's going on in their life. 20-30% of the time did we ever really talk about me. 3. There was always a constant but back seated pressure to submit to their decisions or their will. It wasn't an overwhelming or overt pressure but it was always there, like a hum of a refrigerator. Unconsciously, I felt there was something unbalanced but I never picked up on it until after. 3. They poked fun/made into a small joke when I made a mistake. But it was a constant occurrence with the same mistake. My ex-friend would always nudge that I was not very self-aware when I didn't catch on to certain nuances from others. Eventually it led me to believe I was completely oblivious to others around me and ignorant. They displayed it as a way to help me overcome my flaws so I viewed it as something helpful instead of harmful. 4. There was always a constant pressure within me to constantly prove to them I was a good friend. This pressure was something I felt a lot and consciously felt whenever they talked about or mentioned how it was difficult for them to trust people or point to their trust issues. There was at one point where they always brought up something I did one time that led to their distrust in me. We had made up at that point but they kept bringing it up every now and then so I brought up the fact that if they kept bringing it up, our friendship would not survive. They realized this and never did it again but that event still lived inside me and was a constant reminder of my fault as a friend in the past. This was more of a negative push-pull where we both contributed that led to an eventual toxicity. 5. They didn't really make it a habit to say thank you or show appreciation when I did something for them. I realized afterwards that I often did a lot of favors for them or did things for them in which they sometimes say thank you but rarely showed much appreciation for it. I learned after we broke up that they had complained to a mutual friend how I forgot supply dog food for my dog when I asked them to watch over her when I was on a trip when I had done a lot for their own dog for them, like pick their dog up from daycare or Rover and drop her off, watched her whe they were out of town, babysat. I rarely like to lean on others for help, even when I can and should, but this was the one time I had to lean on someone for help and asked them for it. It's the fact that they complained about one thing about the one time I had asked them to do something for me, for something I did for them on several occasions. When I learned this, I realized I was being taken for granted. 6. There was always a feeling of something being unbalanced. Friends should feel equal to yourself and not positioned higher or lower than you. For me, there were a lot of times I felt I was lower than them. They were the dominant one. This wasn't constant though so I always brushed it off as me scrutinizing something too much. It felt 50/50 split though in how often this feeling occured to me but equally so with feeling like things seemed to be going smoothly too. I want to say though that this person most likely is not aware of these things that happened during our friendship and was not doing any of these things on purpose and intentionally and consciously behaving or acting this way. These things were things that happened to me specifically and things I learned after we broke up. Unfortunately, I cut them out and really suddenly but I had my reasons. To this day, they probably see things as me being the bad guy in this and they are the victim, which I'm fine with or rather cannot be bothered anymore to spend any more energy towards them. I don't regret how I left things, which is really badly, because it needed to happen for my own sake. But I really want to caution people to not break things off with other people if you can help it. It's not a healthy way of dealing with difficulties or relationships when you struggle to overcome issues. Find a way to fix things or try to communicate with each other, if you can. The reason why I didn't try to fix this was because we have had a long history with one another. Over a decade. And unfortunately, the way things were set up and kept continuing on was near impossible to fix because of how shaky the foundation was. You can stabilize a shaky foundation if you try but ours was going to be shaky forever because I knew I was always going to revert back to old habits to how's things were instead of how things should be.
