I LOVE the skill based approach to Flexibility. It’s all about what you can do with your body rather than ‘oh wow this hamstring can stretch a great deal’
If each skill is a point, how many points did you get?
1.) Deep Squat 00:51
2.) Toe Touch 02:23
3.) Shoulder Dislocations 03:34
4.) Back Bend 04:47
5.) Front Splits 05:24
6.) Middle Splits 06:41

I didn't realize how flexible I actually was until I went to PT for my hip and my therapist was impressed with some stuff. I attribute it to the fact I took ballet for many years as a child. Even though I've been sedentary most of my adult life, that early training never seemed to fully go away, I was shocked I could still kind of do a backbend at 28 after years of sitting on my butt.

One of my first cues was getting the best score on the sit and reach test in high school despite being notoriously not athletic or interested in anything like that. Then it came to getting into dance and yoga casually, and having like the one class I joined have the instructor remark on my hip flexibility just during a warmup stretch. Upon trying out a bunch of flexibility stuff on my untrained body, I'm starting to wonder if Im either gifted or have EDS

If you get flexible as a child you retain it very well for most of your life, or can at least reclaim the range quickly. Gaining flexibility you never had as an adult is a very uphill battle on the other hand

2 out of 6. I can squat and backbend like a mother fluffer but I can’t touch my toes without that stretch PAIN. And definitely no splits. Guess I got to watch more of your vids and start practicing 🫠🤷🏻‍♀️ Edit: I’d like to add (having now read other comments) that I used to be sooo flexible… dance was super helpful in that. Guess it’s motivating to have the phrase “use it or lose it” apply to yourself.

I'm 37 and I know your pain. I've mostly fixed my weight within the past four months (started at ~37% BMI, now probably closer to 30), but there's another half-year or so of recomp left to go (I work out at a gym, 3/week; 5/week soon). My depression from a 7-year relationship finally failing didn't last long (about 3 weeks), but the suicidal ideations are never pretty. Personally, I highly recommend a gym membership (the social element is a nice bonus, but I mostly just enjoy lifting heavy and it's done wonders for my mood), but getting flexy is also sure to help as well. Best of luck to you, friend. - a Transylvanian gymbro

Hey David, thanks for making this content. I've been struggling with chronic joint pain for the past few years, and only recently found out that stretching during flare ups helps alleviate the aches faster than just sitting sedentary until things alleviate on their own. I have no clue how the science behind that works, but your content has been so helpful as I continue to maximize my athletic capacity.

4/6. Not bad for a 29 year old who never stretches if I do say so myself! I haven’t done a backbend in a year or so when I showed off for my 5 year old niece so I was kinda surprised I still can lol I deep squat almost everyday while sewing and didn’t even realize it was a flexibility flex. I can also wrap my hands underneath my feet when I toe touch and reach “that spot” on my back with either hand. I can do the shoulder dislocation with the belt, not in half yet but close to it. My problem area is the splits. I’ve never been able to do any kind of split (I’ve been stuck about 6” off the floor forever) but it’s been a lifelong goal of mine. I’ve stretched for weeks before without making any progress and giving up. Through watching your channel, I now understand that since I was stretching to pain, I was actually pushing myself further from my goal vs closer to it. I’m so excited that I’ve found your channel. I’m gonna start doing your split stretches starting today and see if I can make my flexibility dreams come true!

I have been trying to regain that flexibility ever since I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (affects my knees) I am in remission, but I still have joint very limited knee mobility, as in my heels can't reach my bottom. Also, when doing weighted leg extensions, I feel pain at about a 45-degree angle in the knee. Would quad stretches or any other stretches be beneficial for me?

I'd have 1 point, but it's a point I'm proud of. I'm not very flexy (yet), but I've for some reason always been able to do a deep squat. And boy are you right about it being a handy skill in everyday life, I make active use of my ability to deep squat all the time. Worked on my flexibility the past two weeks, and I absolutely love how my body feels now. I can actually use it the way I want to use it, and there's a lot less stiffness and discomfort when doing everyday things like standing up after sitting.

I’ve got a green belt in karate, and flexibility is key in this sport, as a kick to the head is worth 3 points, while to the upper body only two, and that one point can make the difference between winning and losing sometimes.

My job involves a lot of putting files in cabinets and the deep squat is so useful for getting the bottom two drawers without hurting my back

Can I do the types of stretches and movements you show on your channel if I’m hyper mobile? I just figured it out due to having significant back and joint pain in my early 20s; now I’m trying to I guess develop the musculature around my joints to provide stability… Now that I think of it, how can you do all of this stuff without experiencing soreness or aching? Cus I can do most of these movements without any pain but at the end of every day I’m sore all over, even if I haven’t done much of anything that day.
