I remember when I was young my mom bought me like 6 crayola watercolour sets and I have vague memories of prying the colours out and shoving them up my nose 😂 then the next day at school I would sneeze and everyone would *F R E A K* out because I would have blue shit running out of my nose 😂😂😂 that’s when my mother realised I was going to be an artist 💁🏻‍♀️

No hate this is just constructive criticism. The more expensive water color would’ve been more pigmented if you didn’t dilute it that much. I my opinion, you diluted it A LOT, way too much.

She might be used to using watercolour from a pan/cake style palette (like the cheap ones she used) and not the kind you dilute from a tube. She admitted she put herself through art school using the cheapest supplies she could get from dollar tree, she likely didn’t have professional supplies handed to her. Even schools that give you stuff to use in class generally have student grade which is usually the cheap accessible stuff, not pro grade paints and expensive paper. I agree it’d be fair to do a retry of this though, because it was an error and she’ll have more experience now with it. Maybe she could compare brands like Arteza, Mozart, etc, the cheaper brands that have decent results. 🤷‍♀️

Coming from someone that uses Windsor and Newton, you can get a palette online for cheaper and they actually last for a long time. You won’t want to add too much water to them if you want a better pigment. I’ve never had problems with this brand but you have to learn how to use them right. To be fair you’ve never used them but this is just my advice. I use mine by first spraying the palette with water then dipping a watercolor brush in water. Next I dip my paint brush into the paint gently and then if I want a lighter pigment I quickly dip it in water. Your supposed to keep adding layers if you want it to turn out nicely (I rarely do and it’s still fine though) I just dip without it. Also remember to keep two glasses of water, one for cleaning, one for dipping. And never, ever use paper that isn’t made for watercolor or it could shrivel up or not mix as nicely.

Not really a fair comparison at the beginning. You added water to everything to soak it, took the Crazy Art and Crayola straight, then the Winsor & Newton you SUPER diluted after loading up the brush. Winsor and Newton was actually one of the best watercolor pigments in a tube form. You just need to know on how to use the medium well. This should be a win win situation for both since crayola is also a wonderful medium for beginners. Fun fact: yes, you need to soak your watercolors before using. BUT! instead of drowning the pigments, just spritz. And also, you need to put your water color pigment in a tube form on your palette un drown. I mean, TAKE THAT WATER AWAY FROM YOUR PIGMENT. You need to dilute it with the brush 😅

you added wayyy to much water that is why it’s so sheer. you just need water to activate it. The more water the more sheer it will be. I don’t think your water technique works because all it’s doing is making it more translucent

advice for people starting out: don't settle for a cheap set; it simply isn't worth it. people say you can still make good art regardless of the supply, but that doesn't mean it's easy. You'll end up fighting with the supply and not being able to get as good results. If you can't buy expensive paints, I would 100% recommend the Koi watercolor sets. They can layer easily and they're relatively cheap for a good variety of colors. They also come with water brushes which I've used for a lot of things and have gotten great results! They're a little chalky, but that's avoidable if you dont use the white that it comes with. Either way it's not really noticeable.

For watercolour I would recommend the windsor and newton cotman line. They're student grade and REALLY good. The ones Rae had were the professional ones, which are about 3 times the price of cotman, but obviously more suited to.. well professionals. dude the prang sets from around the 80s-early 90s before they were bought out are so nice. They've changed a lot. If I were to reccomend a student grade set now, it'd be the kuretake pallet or WN cotman watercolor.

To be completely just and fair you should compare average price per gram. Because if this shallow tray contains as much paints as one or two tubes, we are looking at about 10 times more expensive paints, not 60, which is quite different.

CatherineZ Agreed. Cheap watercolours don’t contain pigments either, they contain dyes and fillers. Dyes are brighter than pigments but fade within weeks. There’s simply no comparison to which is best, it’s a no brainer but having said that art can be created with anything at any price. It all depends if you want longevity (lightfastness) and you don’t want to fight with your materials. The tubes will also last a lot longer.

The problem with the crayola side isnt the paint. Its clearly a water problem (too much water.) You can let chalky paints sit for a few minutes to get more pigment. Crayola watercolors are pretty great for $5 (and no minerals like cadmium). I have seen many artists make beautiful painting with them. Its not about the art supply, its the artist.

Now, like 30 years later, you can buy some Crayola stuff here, but it is not super common, because most stores normally sell local brands like Faber Castell, Staedtler and Stabilo. Some supplies aren't worth the money but most of the expensive supplies are actually REALLY better than cheap supplies. This test made me cringe sorry ... i'm a huge fan of watercolors and the W&N are really pigmented. They are not overpriced, they are made with really high quality pigments. I think the most expensive, the ones I believe are the "best" or the "best" are the Daniel smith's watercolors and the Dr Ph Martin's watercolors. The crayola are really light weight, full of water and not much pigment, they are also chalkier. The W&N are really thick concentrated watercolors, they are a lot more long lasting, I have some of my W&N paint and have been using the same for years ^^

Sakuems i agree, when it comes to the art world it's not the same as clothing or other stuff. When you get gucci shirt for 500 dollars that has quality of 50 dollar shirt MAX that's an "Overpriced item". But art supplies just don't work like that there is not really such thing as Luxury supply's. There is so much that goes into it like Pigments that are super expensive, quality paint should be more resistant to light, it should mix better and much more, and if you need that quality for your work nobody is going to just give it to you for 2 bucks or smth so paying 15 dollars for small tube isn't as crazy as some people think it is..(I'm sorry i needed to rent)

I actually prefer Sennelier to W&N, but totally agree... like these are artist grade watercolors, they're not even in the same class. Crayolas are literally meant for children. $60 for watercolor isn't even that much... not to mention, you could get something like Blick or W&N's student grade that would still be better.

How about testing fine-liners? I've seen a lot of expensive-expensive comparisons but nor cheap-expensive

Yeah, ew! This didn't happen here either because this was more fun and jokes than an actual comparison.

A concern about that is 1) either the cheap fine liners arent waterproof, or 2) the cheapness shows with time. Sure they could be amazing, maybe the same quality as the expensive ones, but they won't last anywhere near as long. So in a comparison video where they'll be used once to show which is better/ more worth it, it won't show the actual full potential comparison.

I imagine the reason Crayola's watercolor just isn't working right is because Crayola is washable. They had to make the formula come off when it's wet even after it's dried, which makes the layering you can do with permanent watercolors just functionally impossible. I'm not sure how you could do 'washable' watercolor and not have it melt when it touches water after its dried.

Well, the artists can take the tube paints and make them solid by pouring them into half pans and letting them dry and then treating them as solid watercolors. That works really well. Also, you can get the winsor and newton cotman solid water colors on amazon for a really good price, like less than twenty dollars if your careful.
