the reason that the caran d'ach is so expensive is because of their high lightfast rates. that makes them great for people who want to sell their art so that the color doesn't fade over a short period of time.

@@amitshelar1783 because we use these supplies. Caran D'ache Luminance has a far superior performance in pigment payout and smooth laydown. Uhmm I agree that the sticker price is high. However, you are missing the biggest point of the luminance line. It is expensive because the colors won't change years after you drew it. It has really high lightfastness rating if not the highest meaning it has museum/archival quality.

@chrisinreallife2022
@chrisinreallife2022 4 жыл бұрын
@@vanillagacha5321 You can, but if the colored images are going to be stored in light they will definitely fade if the pencils and things you use do not have a good lightfast rating. Crayola doesn't have any lightfastness rating, and even prismas I believe are pretty low on the ratings as well. I love Rae and I'm all about saving when I can, but if she is doing art for money, such as commissions and stuff that isn't going to be stored away in a closed book, she really isn't giving the people their money's worth if she's making their art with cheap supplies like crayolas and Prismas. She does love Polychromos, though too. And they are excellent and lightfast.
@wyrmoffastring
@wyrmoffastring 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisinreallife2022 Also those pencils aren't really meant to be used in the same way she uses the cheap ones. You build up layers slowly, it's a very labor-intensive process (which is why I rarely draw in pencils lmao, despite owning a set of Polychromos ones), and then you blend them with a medium. I get that you can do art however you see fit, but if you're gonna be shitting on an art supply you should at least know how to use it. And I agree, art supplies are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE in general, kinda like everything is, and you can get cheaper art supplies than the most expensive that are still professional (for example I love Daniel Smith watercolors but they're way over my budget, so I use Senellier, which are still professional ones, but like, a third of the price) and don't have to fight with shit supplies meant for toddlers. Another issue I have with Rae's videos, and similar ones like her's, is that they give the impression that artists spend money on supplies because they wanna look bougie and that supplies don't matter, when in fact they do, especially if you do commissions. You then get people requesting commissions who refuse to pay a fair price, cus they saw people say how you can make great art with dollar store paint. Yeah of course you can. It'll fade within five years though and you can't hang it on a wall cus it'll fade even faster, and the colors will change drastically because it's meant for children who's art will be on the fridge for max a month.

If I'm being totally honest, I see a really big difference between the prismacolor and the Caran D'ache. The Caran D'ache is so much more cohesive. Like the colour blends are flawless which is both a testament to both the quality of the pencils and Rae's skill. For real I kind of feel like the Caran D'ache are worth the money. You can always add a prismacolor white to the set. I'm many ways I feel that the black and white prismacolor pencils are the best out of the whole range anyway.

First off, I LOVED your review. I managed to find Caran D’ache Luminance pencils box of 76 on Amazon for $178. I snatched them up as quickly as I could. First, the white pencil was incredible, but needed to at a very sharp point. I did the same drawing with both crayola and caran d’ache for a comparison, as you did. The biggest selling point for me, and what I loved was that caran d’ache can layer for days. Anything that I didn’t like in my drawing could easily be corrected. Crayola, unless I used solvent (which I’m personally not crazy about doing) I was limited to just a few layers. The differences between the drawings. Crayola turned out surprisingly good, but the caran d’ache... most people who see it think it looks photo realistic. It’s night and day, especially if you’re into photo-realistic drawing.(as I am). Just my 2 cents. Crayola is nice, but there’s no comparison to the caran d’ache luminance. Also, something I loved, it didn’t seem to matter how many layers I had with Caran D’ache... if I had a sharp point on my pencil, it would color/write smoothly right on top of it. I had many layers built up of a skin tone (I’m still new to figuring out blending for skin tones) and I was able to create the finest bits of an eyebrow right on top of it. I changed my profile picture to my drawing of this eye I did using Caran D’ache Luminance so that people could see. I did do it following a tutorial... still, as I stated earlier, learning to blend skin tones.

Yeah I just draw and color for pleasure. I'm not an artist, it's just a hobby for me. Although, CraZArt and Crayola colored pencils don't work well for me and my favorite drawing looks a little bad after I colored it. So, I decided to go for a little bit more expensive brand Faber Castell colored pencils. But I would never buy pencils as expensive as Caran Dache because I'm not a real artist.

The colours, the feel, and I have to say after suffering the heartbreak of lightfast issues (even indoor indirect light! ugh) I'm 1000% a snob about it now. I also have to appreciate that the artist quality pencils are replaceable individually for all those browns and greens I run through. I actually vote for caran to be honest. Personally thought it looked the highest quality, had the truest shades and blended the best and looked the realist. Plus, I know that white isn't going to show up as well after putting a different shade down, so it's obviously not going to work as well. Most people leave larger areas the paper color and then put the white in first and blend through later to just make it a highlight, but it all depends on personal art style and technique you use. I've never had luck with crayola pencils haha.

100% worth it to not only have the great formula but as a lot of people have said, lightfastness. SO so important it's critical to being a professional artist. Imagine selling or showing a piece and it fading in just a few years, it would be awful. Also I'd recommend trying to blend your pencils differently, like using gentle circular motions and building it up slowly. Takes time but 100% makes it look like an amazing oil painting :)

The reason the Caran D'ache Luminance are so expensive is because they are made from premium quality Californian cedar wood and have the highest lightfastness of all the coloured pencils and don't contain a lot of fillers. They are also imported from Switzerland where they are made, and are cheaper there.

I'll be honest, I was a total die hard for my Prismas but my 72 pack is rapidly shrinking and I'm not sure I can afford to replace them. Then my bestie got me the 120 pack of Arteza Expert coloured pencils and they are like a perfect middle between Prismacolors and Polychromos, beautifully buttery soft and smooth but not as much as the Prismas which I end up sharpening every 5 seconds. They keep their point longer, like THE Polys. Definitely a fantastic cheaper swap if you can't afford Prisma prices all the time. I also bought the Prismacolor Scholar coloured pencils and honestly, they are pretty good! I wouldn't put them up there with the Prismas/Polys like I would the Arteza but they are still really decent coloured pencils, especially for the price.

Nice video! Some of your complaints with the Luminance bugged me a bit though. The price is that high because of their lightfastness/archivability and the fact that it’s a Swiss product. Switzerland has very high prices in general because the average income is a lot higher, add to that shipping and export cost and the pricing makes a lot more sense. Edit: This is just a bit of an overview for why the Luminance are priced that way, not any form of endorsement. Pick the pencils you feel most comfortable with and those that suit your needs and budget.

My thoughts exactly. The fact that they are so lightfast makes it worth the money to me. If you are trying to sell a piece you drew with Crayola, its going to fade much quicker where the Caran D'Ache pencils will hold their pigment for years and years.

Well there are brands that are great that aren’t that expensive... the pencils i grew up with have larger packs that are more expensive but also have smaller packs that are still great and not too expensive (the more expensive one is mostly because of bigger amounts of colours.. like you have packs that have literal blend colours like amazing skin tones or a golden or silver colour.. you basically pay more for more exotic colours.. wich to be fair is defenitely worth it in my own opinion cuz how many times have you had as a kid where you struggled to get a good skin colour for your drawings? Most kids would be fussing and just be like fuck it YOU ARE AN ALIEN NOW.. then there was me who just rummaged trough my bag of pencils and was like this skin coloured one is my bae )

I feel like the biggest misconception people have when it comes to cheap items is; colour. And what I mean is alot of people assume cheaper materials naturally have poor colour pay off, when in actuality, most modern 'cheap' supplies are FULL of pigment. Pigment these days, is very easy to make. What makes the prices different is usually down to the mechanics of whatever you're purchasing. Expensive ones tend to be light fast, or they don't turn muddy after a few mixes. You can build more layers, each colour can mix with one another, the colours don't separate, the lead doesn't break as quick, the wood doesn't chip away, etc. Colour these days, to me anyway, doesn't define quality.
@adew4u2enjoy
@adew4u2enjoy 5 жыл бұрын
Like I have said to many people. When you use cheap supplies, at some point it will look like an old prison tattoo in time. Crayola is in the kids department for a reason. Kids don't care about light fastness or color particulate counts. Crayola has no desire to be as good as a professional brand. They cornered the kids section on purpose. Kids just want red lips on their purple version of daddy.

Caran D'Ache make beautiful pencils, not that I own any, but the thing is, those colours have recognised lightfast ratings. That is not something that a hobby artist is so worried about, so the expense is probably not justified, but a lot of professional artists do take that seriously. The Crayolas offer superb value for money and if you're not worried about colours fading should be considered. My personal favourite brand is Derwent, I love the colours in their sets. I enjoyed seeing your take on the issue.

Well, Luminance are so expensive because they have the highest lightfastness in the world (derwent lightfast might be better now, not sure). But the formula is meh, I prefer harder pencils, that's why I will always choose the Pablos as the better of the two, from this brand, for my kind of work, at least. i love adding details, that's why I hate Prismacolor, lol. Faber Castell Polychromos are the best pencils in the world, for me. And also for many artists: you can layer them for-eh-ver, you can add the finest details, their price is acceptable, you can buy them open-stock anywhere in the world (mostly), they have the best black pencil I have ever tried, and their lightfastness is great. ❤
