@@jeepthang72 Thanks! Yes, as far as I know the battery is the same cell count and the BMS is the same. So there should be no issue putting another 10s battery in parallel with it. I highly recommend using another Meepo battery instead of LiPo batteries, because it’s much harder to damage the Meepo batteries. My LiPos have held up great after a couple hundred miles now, but I figured I should mention that stock Meepo batteries will be easier for most people 🤙

Also you might want to do a quick disconnect like a 3mm plug halfway up the cable so you can get off quickly and in case you fall it wont rip the cord

Awesome idea! You should design some sort of mount that pins the cable to just above the rear trucks. Maybe even just take a piece of metal and screw it down using the truck bolts (leave a gap for the wires to go through). This way there will be no chance of the cable being run over or tangled by the wheels. Much safer.

Hi I commented on here 2 weeks ago. I got everything I needed today. The hardest part about this is soldering the cable to make it a xt-60 cable as I used a thick wire and the solder wasn't liking it. If youve never used lipo batteries like me they are pretty straight forward after a video or 2. Ive now connected everything to my yeeplay board and works a dream. This is the best way to go. This guy is a legend and would love to see more content bro.

Thanks man! I’ve got a few more tips I’ve learned since posting the video and just haven’t had time to make anything new yet. So I’ll give ya the scoop here: 1) Get a LiPo checker with alarm. They’re only like 7 bucks and you leave it plugged into the balance port of one of the LiPos (and set the alarm right~3.4v) it will let you know your LiPos are low. This is important since the LiPos shouldn’t be ran as low as the stock pack. 2) Don’t leave the LiPos plugged in after you’re done riding. Any battery that isn’t permanently being left in parallel, should only be put in parallel when being used. It’s a little safety thing. And 3) Keep good track of the cables. Make sure nothing is dragging the ground (quickest way for unsuspecting damage to occur is poor cable management imo). Make sure the xt60, on the battery side of the extension, is outside of your backpack or whatever so if you have to bail it will come unplugged easily. Had to test this yesterday actually 🤙 Stay safe

I got lucky and the company I work for makes all kinds of 3D printed and machined things for me 😉 But sure I’ll answer the question: You need to take a multi meter and verify the voltage of the batteries that you put in series, before plugging them in parallel with any other battery. If you have four 5s batteries, you can put 2 of them in series to make a 10s, then do the same thing with the other 2; so you would then have two 10s packs. You can then verify the voltage is close enough (no more than 1v apart total) and plug them in parallel. Then you can plug into your board as long as the voltages are close there too. *it is important to take them out of series and out of parallel to charge them separate in a balance charger. Hope this info helps! 🤙

Dope mod. I’ve seen a lot of people with Backfire boards doing dual battery mods and running them in parallel, you can effectively double a Zealot, G3, etc.‘s range with that. Also, I don’t wanna sound like your mom or nothin, but PLEASE wear a helmet dude. Mine saved my life a couple years ago. I was carving on my ol’ boosted v2 and I hit a freak crack, slid out the drive wheels, and went off the board backwards. I hit my head so hard on the pavement that my helmet cracked. I had a bad concussion, but I was okay in the end. Had I not had my helmet on, that would’ve been my skull. I’d likely be dead or paralyzed. I know helmets aren’t “cool,” I had the same insecurity at first, but after my first bad wreck I stopped giving a shit what others thought, ya know?

Jumping into this convo a year late, but I have always worn Pro-tec half shell helmets WITHOUT the EPS foam inside. (I tend to wreck in the same helmet more than once and EPS foam is single use) despite the absence of EPS foam technically making the helmet less protective, I have smacked the hell out of my head in a number of those Pro-tec helmets and continue to swear by them. Can be had for 30 bucks, and much more convenient and less stigmatized than something bigger. @@ArizonaJewell

Just did this mod on my v3s with two HRB 18.5v 5000mah lipos.. have everything hooked up and charged but the lipos are not contributing any power when plugged in. Not sure here. Plenty of power from the batteries going through the cable i made... the v3s battery is 36v and my two batteries equal 37v.. wonder if this has something to do with it

I think you should have a separate plug for your lipo battery. For example: Once your main battery is drain. Unplug the loop key to disable your main battery and plug your backpack battery. Then we don't have to worry about the voltage stuff. I will use the backpack or removable top mount battery for emergency stuff.

That’s a solid move. I think most people would be happier with that option. I don’t mind the parallel thing since it gives a slight performance boost (lower voltage sag when going uphills) and verifying voltage is something I do dozens of times a day at work anyway lol. So Say if I added these lipo batteries while my original battery is completely dead will this hurt the batteries. Cuz the voltage from the main battery and the lipo batteries will be different

I am glad someone asked actually! This is what would happen: the voltages would equalize very quickly between the two packs. If the external pack was fully charged, and the stock pack was dead, the two packs would both hit about ~3.7v per cell, instantly. So the external pack would be charging the stock pack essentially. But charging it to ~37 volts instantly would be: 1) a large load on the external battery and would not be very good for it. And: 2) a MASSIVE charge rate to the stock battery. Which would almost certainly hurt it. This is why I put the part about checking both batteries with a multimeter, in the video. Hope the explanation was good and shoot me any other battery q’s, I’m here all day folks 🙏

ethan dalley - Correct, you would not want to ride until one set of batteries got low, then plug another set in parallel. You want to plug them all in when they are fully charged (since that is the easiest voltage to obtain; just charge all the packs). As for the connections for four 5000mah 5s packs: you will need two “series cables” to bring each pair of batteries together into a 10s configuration (that’s what the ‘s’ in 10s is:series). Then one parallel cable to bring your two 10s 5000mah packs into a 10s2p 10,000mah pack. One more note to mention is: you don’t want to run the LiPos down as far as the stock battery. I recommend unplugging the LiPos before your board says ~20%. This is because LiPos have a higher nominal voltage and will degrade quickly when ran as low as the stock pack. Hope this is what you were after 🤙

Yup, you can do that. This video is about putting batteries in parallel (like electric cars do) but pulling them apart to charge them (because I am using a less expensive battery). If you have two Meepo batteries you can definitely just unplug one and pop on the other 🤙

I made the parallel adapter that goes between the battery and esc and an extension wire that goes from my parallel adapter up to the external battery (for me I used a 60” cable that makes it into my backpack). I just needed a pack of xt60 connectors (get the pairs) and 6’ of soft silicone 14awg wire. Should be able to find that at your local internet 🤙 Stay safe 🙏

It will be hard to get 10s voltage with those. If you had one 4s 5000s and two 3s 5000s you could do a custom series harness. You got some research ahead of you if you decide to go that route. Just be safe 🤙

@@ironman98 - Yup. Good concern. Most riders are under 200lbs. And at that most range projections are for people under 150. I would agree that you want the Er version. For 99% of people that get this board, that is really what they want. Doing the battery mod I did is not recommended really, since virtually everybody would be happier with the Er version and less maintenance 🤙

I hate to be the Debby downer. But I haven’t seen anyone bring up the different chemistry of the batteries and the added volatility which is inevitably involved. Where does the ESC send the energy with regen braking? If it sends it to the lipo then that’s a recipe for cell imbalance and fire which happens to be in your back pocket.... also, most people won’t even run different aged and cycled 18650s together so how could a Lipo plus cheap 18650s not be a fire hazard?

Hey Stephen, plenty of people have asked about this but I have no problem explaining again. The issues you are worried about would only occur if the batteries are left in parallel permanently (charged and discharged repeatedly). Since the LiPo cells I am using have basically the exact same nominal voltage as the 18650s, the batteries behave the same under load. Same goes for regenerative braking. As the ‘charge from braking’ is applied to the “pack” the cells that are in parallel stay the same voltage. Even if the pack with the lower resistance takes more of the current during the braking, the energy is quickly distributed between the two packs and their voltages equalize. There is never a load ‘so great’ that it sags one pack down more than the other. Neither the LiPo pack or the 18650 pack fall outside of their appropriate voltage range ever (the ESC has a low voltage cutoff that is applicable for the LiPo as well). Several hundred miles and counting with me periodically putting a LiPo in parallel and there has been basically zero degradation to either pack (outside of what would be expected). Disclaimer: this video is not recommending you to do anything. If you’d like to ask any questions, feel free. I always recommend doing more research and if something is proven clearly wrong, please let me know 🤙

Hey brotha... I want to start out by saying I love the video because I like to see people thinking outside of the box a bit and have only seen a few people do this type of mod a couple times! I have 2 questions though... Why don't you just do it so you can just swap them as they need?.... I carry one or two extra batteries in my back pack and just swap them as they get down to around 20% and that can get you around the 60 mile range as meepo v3 extended range batteries are up to 22 mile range and can get 15 miles easy per battery giving you a range of 45-66 mile range!! Another idea is making an option to just plug in 2 or 3 battery packs at once as we have done with boards before doubling the range!

Hopefully, you're still checking for Q's here. Anyway, I'm barely getting a handle on batteries, but I think the discharge rate also needs to be the same/similar? Meepo's std and ER battery discharge at 30A, so I'm guessing that the esc can only handle 30A. Did you do anything special to make sure the lipo's discharged at 30A or am I way off about all this?

Hey Ben, good question and the short answer is: it’s important to make sure the batteries are rated to discharge at a minimum 30amps (for a Meepo v3), but their discharge ratings don’t have to be the same when used the way I am here. More info: To check the battery’s discharge ability I use a special meter to check their internal resistance and do some calculation based on that (the 5000mah LiPo I used was easily rated to >30 amps). It is also important that the packs have the same voltage range; the BMS cuts power at 3.5v per cell and the max charge voltage for both the standard pack and my LiPo is 4.2v per cell. I don’t charge the packs while in parallel, but you do need to make sure neither battery would fall outside of it’s usable voltage range ever. Once I am sure the packs can handle the current needed and will always stay inside of their safe voltage operation range I can put them in parallel and boogie. Hope this one helped 🤙

How does regenerative brakes work on this with this sort of mod? I live on a huge mountain in Colorado, and coming down it, is quite dangerous so I utilize the brakes extensively with regen. With a Lipo needing balancing when it recharges how does this affect it?

All lithium batteries will need balancing at the end of every charge cycle. The stock battery doesn’t actually get balanced with regen either. It gets balanced using it’s built in BMS at the end of the charge cycle. As for for safely using LiPos in this mod: they must be removed and balance charged (on a smart charger) separately, with every single use. There has been zero harm to my LiPos or stock battery after nearly a year of use now.

I am not sure if this will be the right deal for you. A Meepo v3 -VS- a very steep hill is quite the match, even with an upgraded battery. I can tell you what I used, but I can’t tell you what to do. I used two 5s 5000mah batteries ran in series. I charge them separately with an ISDT K1 charger, and made a 6 foot long extension cable to keep the battery in by backpack. The smarter (but more expensive) choice would have been for me to use a 2nd stock Meepo v3 battery to run in parallel. Hope this info helps 🤙

@@ChaddRainsFPV I have the V3 ER, I actually got 2 batteries for it but they aren't enough to make it up the 4 15% to 25% grade. The motors manage over 12 ish mph (it displays in KM/H) but it ends up getting close to running dead at the very last uphill turn. I also had issues with the Regen kicking out because my ride into town is 9.8 miles downhill and if I leave it at 100% the motors kick off and I was free rolling scared the piss out of me. Since then I've learned to ride a few minutes before I bomb the mountain and 9.8 miles downhill tops it off from 95% to about 100 said and done. I need a tad more battery than what the stock ERs combined can provide hence why I ask about your 21 AH layout. I really could use that kind of mileage lmao

Good eye lol. I personally had two 4s LiPos and a 2s LiPo. All from the same manufacturer that the company I work for had custom ordered. So I was positive they were the same cells. 4000mah, same c rating same iR. I had to make a really funky cable too lol. Later on I use two 5s packs wired in series for 10s 🤙

What's that Black hotglue looking stuff at 3.10?? I do the same thing when using any kind of mesh or wrapping my wires in fiber tape but I use regular hotglue which works but I would like something stronger for like gluing thing's inside the battery or esc enclosure..

Of all the content my agent watches, he asks about the hot glue 🙃 lol It is paintless dent repair black hot glue. The stuff is great! No discoloration over time, holds stronger and there are almost zero strings that form when you let off the trigger. It’s real high temp too so it doesn’t melt as easy when near a warm component 🤙

Never change the voltage. Adding packs in parallel increases the capacity / range. The system is not built for a higher voltage and the BMS or the ESC will likely limit you from a higher voltage anyway 🤙 It’s too big a mod to try to increase voltage on these boards 👍

Technically, you can put two batteries of the same voltage (same cell type etc) in parallel, even if they have different capacities. As long as the load you are pulling doesn’t exceed the capabilities of either one of the packs and, as long as the battery’s BMS doesn’t get in the way. In your case, I would just play it safe and swap the packs mid way through the ride instead of trying to put them in parallel. It’s the safer way, and since I don’t know anything about the board/batteries teemoboard makes, I have to recommend the safe thing 🤙

If you are really new to wiring I would suggest not using LiPos but instead putting another Meepo battery in parallel. It takes a lot of planning to do this one right, especially with LiPos. As for putting the batteries in parallel, all the cables are linked in the description. And making an extension is as easy as putting one connector at each end of a 4+ foot long wire. Read through the comments on this video too, there is a lot of good info I have talked with people about 🤙

Joe - I have not personally used a second Meepo battery and left it in parallel. For the safest practice, split them apart and charge them separately. As long as the original pack is not so old that the cells have degraded substantially, there should be no problem putting a new pack in parallel with it (again my recommendation is splitting apart to charge because I haven’t looked into how the two pack’s BMSs will act when ran together, only through the XT60; there are plenty of people that do leave two meepo batteries in parallel however. If you want to do this try to reach out on forums like Facebook.) Hope this helps brother 🤙

I would not recommend that but it is possible. The ESC has under-voltage protection and possibly over current protection, but those things were normally handled by the stock battery’s BMS. So replacing with a standard 10s LiPo would be like removing half of your battery failsafes. Hope this info helps 🤙

What is the all around cost for making your own? I was thinking of doing the same but found an "ER+" battery on Indy Speed Control LLC for 330, which replaces the original battery, and would be more sleek. Then I'll just carry around the original and swap when needed. But having the external plug idea is pretty neato.

Thanks! Both stock and external batteries going strong! That goop is ‘paintless dent repair hot glue’. It’s very high temp and normally doesn’t leave strings while applying like other hot glues. It holds better and doesn’t discolor to an ugly off-yellow after a few weeks too 🤙

The battery I made actually has a lot more than 60 miles and I never used it. These days I might throw an extra 5Ah pack on to get me past the 1 hour mark, but never any more. I literally can’t ride the board for 2 hours straight unless the road is perfect lol. If I had some softer tires I would 100% use the extra range 🤙

If you make a battery with cells purchased online get either Samsung Q30 cells or LG HG2 cells. You will also need a BMS if you plan to use the stock charger. You really gotta do a lot of research if you want to do this yourself but it can be done. With the equipment you need and the time it would take, I kinda just recommend buying the ER battery for the $300 in all honesty. But hey, I am happy to welcome another member to the battery hobby too. Either way, just be safe 🤙

Hello! It is technically possible but I wouldn’t recommend it for the average hobbyist. You need to charge the batteries separately (every time), ensure they are the exact same voltage when putting them in parallel (every time), and somehow be sure they are both in good condition. It’s easy for someone like me to do this since I have all the tools (I can literally test the iR of every cell of I needed to). For most people, swapping the batteries out when the 1st battery is drained is the way to go 🤙

Hey, there are 3 main things that can result in damaging your battery. Running it outside of its voltage range (so over charging and undercharging), getting it hot (so drawing lots of amps too fast, or charging too fast or even leaving it in the sun) and physical damage (duh). There are little things like leaving it stored at the wrong voltage, etc; that will damage it over time. The first two things, an electric skateboard’s BMS should take care of. I don’t know if yours will (I don’t know what board you have). On my Meepo v3, I plugged in parallel a battery that had 1) the same voltage range as the stock battery. 2) I plugged them together when they were both fully charged (so exactly the same voltage to stop any heat from building as the voltages equalize). 3) I charge them separately. I can’t tell you how to be safe with your battery. I can just say how I can be safe with mine. If you are not 100% of what you are doing, don’t do it. There are plenty of people running two stock batteries. Maybe look into how they are doing this too. More knowledge the better 🤙 Stay safe.

It might work but the batteries in parallel(the meepo and the lipo) need to be the same type and size otherwise you are damaging both of them

They have to be the same chemistry and cell count (so the same voltage) but they do not have to be the same capacity. Because they are in parallel, their voltages cannot be different. So long as neither battery drops below it’s voltage threshold, they will both be fine.

Heat is what hurts batteries. The internal resistance would not matter as long as it’s fairly close and there isn’t a huge amp load applied. Think about it this way: if you had a 10s2p pack, then had another pack with the same exact cells, but it was a 10s1p pack, those two packs would have a different ir. They are not ‘hurting each other’ when left in parallel for 3 hours during a ride.

If you’re at school and don’t have a way to verify voltage, don’t do it. Never plug batteries in parallel without knowing the voltage. The voltages have to be ‘about the same’ when plugging together (in parallel) because both batteries will equalize in voltage very quickly once connected. So if you had one battery that was at say, 35v and the other was at 42v, they would both equalize to about 38.5v very quickly. This would be like applying a huge load to the higher battery and an incredibly fast charge to the lower battery. This could (almost definitely will) damage them. The best thing to do is to plug batteries together when they are fully charged. That way, you know they are both about 42v (but, always verify with a meter first). Stay safe 🤙

Doing a swap is probably the right answer for most people. But if you want to cruise for more than an hour without stopping and want a bit more power through the entire ride, a larger battery is the only way to go. And this was the cheapest / easiest way I could make that happen 🤙

Connecting batteries in series adds their voltages together (so you would have a 20s, 72v pack). That will definitely kill any electronics in your board. I think you should do some more research before attempting any modification of your board/batteries. If you want to swap batteries out, mid ride; it’s really not that hard and much safer. What I’m doing is not recommended for most people that are just getting comfortable with batteries and e-skate modifications. Really, my recommendation is to just get a second battery for your board and take it with you on long rides. Then just swap it out.

@@landenjohnson5328 - For sure. Got lost in the wording 🤙You totally can. The ESC has the low voltage cutoff so it should still save your batteries, too. But I don’t recommend relying on the ESC voltage cutoff alone ( just from my own bias talking here, tho). I like to have some kind of alarm of meter on the pack to check. You can get a cheap 6s cell meter with low voltage alarm and only have it hooked up to one of the 5s packs. Set it for ~3.5v per cell. Just be sure you have a good LiPo charger already if you go for the LiPo packs. It’s an expense a lot of people forget.

This is one of the questions that I have to admit I am not 100% sure, only because both packs have a BMS and I am not sure how well two BMSs play together. I have seen people put two stock batteries together in parallel, so I assume it’s fine (though people will say because the ER pack has different cells don’t do it. I have found it perfectly fine to temporarily put packs with different cells in parallel as long as you don’t go outside of either packs operating voltage, operating temperature or exceed either’s max current rating. It’s also best to disconnect them and charge them separate). Reach out to some other guys putting two packs in parallel and see their experience. I can only speak on my own experience, which has seen no issues (100s of miles now and no degradation to my packs; internal or external). Hope this helps 🤙

Having a light board feels better I think. I prefer to take the board out with the stock battery on most trips. I’ve seen batteries in pelican cases bolted to the middle of the board, but it’s a tripping hazard unless you run foot straps. I guess there are some 3D printed “extended battery trays” that fit to the bottom in the stock-ish location and have room for 2 ER batteries. I think this is the best option for most people 🤙

Maybe use a wire cover or tape to make the wire flush and stick out closer towards the center of the board or maybe even through that handle to keep it on top of everything all together. I had the batteries I used in the mod already, so the most expensive part was pretty much free for me. The cables I made cost like $12 for the wire and connectors. If you were buying the batteries and a charger you’d be in it about $350. That’s 6 5000mah 5s packs (to make a 15Ah 10S) and the right charger. That should get you more range than you will want to ride in a day 🤙

Hey I wanna give you a follow up! I rode the whole 60 miles (took 3 days) and it nearly ruined eSkate for me. The board held up great and I still use it with the stock battery (and the modded one) a few times a month. But riding a board like this for 20 miles a day just sucked. My legs were useless for a week after that. I have the whole thing recorded and will edit and put out the video eventually. But the whole experience sucked so bad I haven’t had any motivation to go back through the footage lol. More people have started asking me about it lately so I’ll try to get it together soon haha 🤙

Let's all keep in mind that you are better off buying a couple extra batteries, and just changing them out when needed. After about 12 miles or so of riding the hub motors on these boards get so hot that you should let them cool down for about 3 to 5 minutes.....WHICH JUST SO HAPOENS TO BE MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME TO BUST OUT THAT SKATE TOOL, TAKE OF THE BATTERY ENCLOSURE, AND SWAP THE BATTERY PACK OUT. Don't be dumb and stick a tethered battery pack anywhere. What happens when you fall off and your board leaves from under your feet? Your battery cable breaks and you're screwed either way. JUST BUY EXTRA BATRERY PACKS AND SWITCH THEM OUT.
