So though I overall agree with you that 1200 calorie diet isn't the way to go for weight loss, BUT I think there's a bit of a misconception with the diet plan. The diet plan is not there to just lose weight, the reason for the 1200 calorie diet is because they need to shrink the liver in order to gain access to stomach. The liver is very large, fatty, immobile, and sits on top of the stomach. And the general sentiment that the fastest way to shrink such a large liver to the proper size is through a very rigorous diet. The other alternative is to go completely Keto, allow the patient to eat as much food as they want as long as it has no carb or sugars, but the surrounding notion is this takes longer to shrink the liver. And on this, there's really not much research done. It's kind of hard to find a large enough population of 600+ lb people and test how much their liver shrinks on various diets, so most bariatric surgeons lean towards being as conservative as possible hence the 1200 diet. Going under anes is highly dangerous for someone at this weight, and the worst possible outcome would be going through the process, anes, making the incisions, dissecting through the tissue only to find you can't access the stomach due to the size of the liver. Also, just for the record, I tell all my bariatric patients to start Keto the second they decide to start looking at having bariatric surgery. This way by the time they're in their 2 week pre-op they've already lost a significant amount of weight especially in the liver. Its of course up to the bariatric surgeon to decide his protocol, but a lot of patient end up having a significantly easier pre-op diet because they started Keto a few months to a year ago, and have already shrunk their liver.

@@Joe-nh8eq you just have bariatric patients.. well oké. Do you tell them about the Fundus and gherlin? That with a sleeve they amputate almost 80/95% of a healthy organ? And that the part that contributes to human growth hormone is almost completely cutt out? Hence why patients ( I say victims) are left with a older face and body when done with this progress. Wounds heal slower.. hair and teeth fall out with allot of “ patients” and the part of the hunger hormone can grow a bit back in other parts of the stomach so in time some Patients do experience hunger again and that’s the reason they almost all (90%) gain all the weight back and then some? And that you need food to fuel your body and burn fat. And when you get this done you stop the energy burning and can’t process or burn the fuel and people are on a sure coarse to get fat again🙄 I was in this traject and didn’t go trew with it in The Netherlands where I’m from. A patient or better said victim died a few days post surgery do to the stomach lining was infected peritonitis. The doctors don’t really put focus on that part I hade to ask what the risks Were and then they went over it briefly.. but yeah she died 😔 A better way is to fix the problem why you got fat in the first place diet and exercise and focus on therapy to find out what’s the root of the problem. A bypass or sleeve is not a safe fix for a problem that’s not in the stomach but in the mind, body and soul. If people would use food to fuel their body and learn about what spikes your insuline they can skip certain foods and get healthier options. I’ve notice I don’t do good on carbs and and better off doing low carb or keto. And get of the couch and DO something. Fat people are often laizy not all but allot are. It starts somewhere and that’s not the operation table imho

Coach Greg is actually way off the mark on this one. The 1200 calorie a-day, high protein no carb diet is not only so they will rapidly lose the weight that they need to, but also because it is 100% imperative that they significantly demonstrate the ability to eat much LESS VOLUME of food due to the nature of the surgery, which will be MASSIVELY reducing their stomach capacity. If they are unable to demonstrate the ability to eat SIGNIFICANTLY less capacity prior to surgery, then the bypass surgery will fail- either in the very short term (which could be fatal), or in the slightly longer term in which they will simply stretch their stomach back out to huge sizes over time. Greg's cookbook could be of good use to them down the road- after they have fully recovered from the surgery and established some some slightly more adaptive eating habits- and help them maintain their reduced size.

They regaining all the initial lost weight.

I think his point was that they don't need surgery, they just need to eat less calorie dense foods. These surgeries are dangerous and anecdotally don't work. Of course the former was an alcoholic, but rather than treating the underlying issue they just shrink your stomach and act like it's a panacea

Actually gastric bypass surgery outweighs all the risks of staying obese. A few hours after the surgery most diabetic patients experience a drop in blood sugar, that can take months just by dieting. Some people cannot move and are bedbound, so they need the surgery and a 1200 cal diet to achieve a significant amount of weight loss.

I lost 70lbs this year so far. Before I lost that I couldn't really move. Every attempt to exercise I gave up. But after losing my first 40lbs through intermittent fasting I could suddenly move on my own. I could suddenly walk downhill and back where I live. Soon I walked around the block. Soon I walked around the park. Soon I took the first short hiking trail. They got longer. And longer. Then I got the idea to walk every marked hiking trail within 30 minutes drive. Now I walk 12.5 miles and I walked them all. My vitals are awesome. I still have 55lbs to lose but the speed and consistency in which I lose weight now is insane. I got my life back. But I wouldn't have been here without first losing those 40 through intermittent fasting. Moral of the story; in general coaches and doctors have no clue what it's like to do *any* exercise at all with that amount of extra weight on you.

I do have one slight critique Greg. In the case of most of these extremely obese people many of them need to lose the weight very quickly or they could die. I'm not saying I completely agree with Dr. Now's diet but I do have to say it's so low in calories for a reason. Edit: I suppose I should clarify a bit. The low restriction is because many of these people are completely bedbound. When that happens usually the low restriction is put on them to help them regain mobility and by no means is it meant to be a permanent thing. It is not sustainable to continuously eat 1200 calories or less permanently and sustainability is a large part of successfully keeping unwanted weight off and staying healthy.
@sebastiansullivan47702 жыл бұрын
but that reason doesnt matter if people dont even remotely stick to it.

@Vr4z1el2 жыл бұрын
I disagree with greg on this one. These people are special cases. They have stomachs the size of footballs, so if they ate to fill their stomachs even if its low cal high volume foods, they would still be eating more than 3k cal per meal and still gain weight. So the idea is to get them to learn to eat small amounts, even if it doesn't fill up their oversized stomachs. They need to learn to eat small amounts so when they have the surgery they don't continue eating high volume foods (low cal or not) and stretch out their stomachs again, and reverse the surgery. These cases are complicated so Greg's diet book wouldn't work for them initially. Maybe after they have learned to change their mindset. But not in the beginning, when filling a overstretched stomach is like filling an empty void.

@@tehevilengineer7939 Actual change is never easy. I’m not saying I agree with the doctors approach, but the reason these people are that overweight is because they always take the easy path. That’s why they even want the surgery. They want to be thin, but don’t want to put in the effort. They want the shortcut. If they can’t prove a willingness to change, even with the surgery, they will just end up fat again.

Greg always does this and people suck him off lol. That diet isn’t supposed to be long term. They have fatty liver and need to lose weight fast to get the surgery. I did my diets perfectly, from the very first one. I always came off the diet, but always kept a habit or two. I always gained back some weight, but not all of it, because I never once went back to all my old habits. It wasn't planned, it just worked that way. I now have the perfect diet for me, with my dream physique. I love my diet. This video and philosophy reminds me of fat acceptance. You will fail, so don't bother trying. I can tell you now, if I ate the way you tell you people to eat, I would be SOOOO much bigger. I love mainly eating my protein and vegetables. I eat 25 grams of protein, and as much vegetables as I like. The key was to get the sugar out of my system, so I was once again able to actually taste the food.

My issue with this whole nonsense is that the reason why someone got to this weight is never addressed. No one get to this weight just because you like food, this people are depressed, frustrated, lonely, disconnected and purposeless. Just changing their diets and restricting the amount of food they can eat (with the surgery) inst going to fix their life, the brain just gonna change the coping method (drinking, gambling, pick your poison) to something else until you get your lifer in order.

Greg is right in terms of his strategy and theoretically it will work. This is a good platform to market and show the benefits of his books however what is not being considered is that the people profiled on this show probably have deep rooted psychological issues or trauma which is at play and has contributed to their weight gain. This is not simply a food management issue.

I lost 24 kilograms but at what cost, I started losing hair it became so thin, I lost most of my muscle mass and I was passing out eating 800 calories after doing cardio. I quickly put the weight back on, even more than before. After a while I just followed a structured 2400 calorie diet + weight training and cardio now I feel full all the time and I'm around 22 BMI.
