I know two men that competed in "the biggest loser" show here in Australia. Behind the scenes, it was a nightmare. Contestants constantly complaining about limb pain, difficulties to breathe, starved and even dehydrated and a few even collapsed behind the scenes throughout the season. These were people weighing 300-350 lbs and heavier, people that consumed 7000+ calories a day and who were inactive. Suddenly they were pushed hard and were given a 1500 calorie diet. The two men I know both suffered from low testosterone (of course, this would have started during their lifestyle prior to the show), their mental health declined especially after they started to rebound after filming of the shows. They had no appetite for months after the show. Due to their rapid weight loss they had so much saggy skin. The show would not provide corrective surgery for them. The extremes of the show had more negative impact than a positive. I'm glad the show no longer exists.

Super informative! Thank you for your input. Only thing I would say is that it all depends on the person. I’ve trained people who have a higher capacity compared to someone who weighs the same. At the end of the day, he accomplished his goals, feels great, and is maintaining. It’s not one shoe fits all. Some people are able to push themselves more right from the start and don’t necessarily need to start slow; the opposite is also true. At the end of the day, I applaud everyone who strives to live a healthy lifestyle.

When I was boxing in my 20s I was offered a fight a weight class lower than where I was used to fighting at and I could not pass it up, it was by far the best paying fight I had ever been offered. I generally stayed about 5-10 pounds overweight so I had to lose 23 pounds in a little over a month for the cut, about 10-12 of which would be water weight in the last 24-36 hours. I force starved the crap out of myself. I ate almost exclusively steamed brocolli and raw tomatoes after I finished lunch. I was able to make the weight cut but I felt very weak leading up to the fight and during the fight and that ended up being my last payed gig, I got knocked out by a guy that I had a half foot reach and 8 pounds on. It took me several years to get back up to the weight I had been at before that fight. My appetite never came back completely. I realize this is anecdotal evidence, and I never carried excessive fat in the first place, but these forced starvation diets can really mess with your stomach, especially if the diet you use to get there throws your hormonal balance off, which is what apparently happened to me. I had to consciously put effort into gaining that weight back and that had been my natural weight. I never bulked or used PEDs to gain that size initially.

3 years ago I lost 45lbs in 6 months, riding my bike and hitting a speed bag every day and doing dumbbell and body weight exercises 3x/week. Started at about 15 minutes each and built up to 30 minutes each after a few months. Progressed with heavier weights/more reps on the dumbbell/body weight workout. Funny part is, I didn’t lose a single pound the first 3 months. Obviously I was gaining muscle and losing fat while maintaining the same weight. Then I lost 15lbs a month the next 3 months in a row. All the muscle I built up did its thing. I have to admit, I did start intermittent fasting the 4th month in and still do it to this day. Other than IF, I didn’t diet or count calories. Now I lift weights 4x/week and do moderate cardio the other 3 days. My workouts are around 45 minutes either way. Now it’s about maintenance.

@ambientoccluser 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as Greg said: the most important thing is HOW DO YOU FEEL, not how do you weight after a regular workout. So if you feel stronger, rejuvenating, do better sleep, no more headaches, back pain, better sex drive and posture - who cares about weight (but we all know organism eventually optimize weight/body composition to height ratio with your performance in equilibrium). Unless you are on a promotional video and got promo car for it, like this guy.
@shelfcloud487
@shelfcloud487 2 жыл бұрын
@@onlyl5344 I didn’t really keep track, I just did it, but I’ll try. First, I just started out by riding my bike about 20 minutes a day. After a few weeks I added hitting a speed bag for about 15 minutes. After doing that for a couple months I added the dumbbell/body weight routine 3x/week which consisted of- Push ups - to failure Dips - to failure Toe raises - 100 or more Curls - 25-30 reps with 20lb dumbbells Tricep extensions - same Presses - same Rows - 40-50 reps with 20lb dumbbells Over the course of a year I got up to 30 minutes each riding the bike and hitting the speed bag. I went up to 25 then 30lbs on the dumbbells. A year in I added a 30 minute walk while doing alternating hammer curls with 3lb dumbbells to my daily bike/speed bag routine. After a year and a half I realized I didn’t have to continue the daily routine so I switched to lifting 4x/week (chest, shoulders, triceps, calfs on Monday & Thursday and back, biceps, quads and hamstrings on Tuesday & Friday) and doing the moderate cardio the other 3 days which actually has increased my muscle mass. The point is that I pushed myself pretty hard for a year and a half but then I cut back and now just maintain. Don’t get me wrong, I still work hard but just cut back on the duration of my workouts as it wasn’t really necessary once I had lost the weight. As far as sleep I just try to get 6-8 hours a night. I actually toss and turn a lot so I’m lucky to get 6 hours of sleep but let’s just say I’ll lay in bed for 8 hours. My diet mainly consisted of boiled eggs, sardines, apples, bananas, baked potatoes and snacking on mixed nuts, sunflower seeds and beef jerky. I drank mainly tea and coffee. When I started, I worked out in the late afternoon but about the time I switched to weights 4x and cardio the other 3 days I started working out first thing in the morning around 7am.

When I started going to the gym 3 months ago I didn't care about a number but about a feeling just like you said, never watched a video just going off of instinct. The first three months I didn't lose much of weight but I definitely have gotten bigger in terms of muscle that it's noticeable. The middle of month 3 I weighted myself again and I'm 2 kilos down while still looking big. Its really about setting realistic expectations. I don't restrict myself in terms of foods but in terms of quantity and quality.
@TMG_Olivert

For a long time i've felt like i'm not making progress in the gym, i wasn't gaining wieght like i wanted to and didn't really see any progress in terms of muscles - but when i look back and see where i started, in terms of muscles and weight i've actually made a ton of progress. I wasn't weighing myself at the start of my journey and therefore i didn't see a whole lot of progress, but i've actually gained roughly 30 pounds in 4 months and went from super skinny and weak to around 15-20% bodyfat and happy, healthy, strong and way better looking physique-wise. All of this is not to brag, it's to try and show that you can be making progress without realizing it. If you're trying to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time for example, the scale wont show that you're losing a lot of weight, because the amount of muscle you're gaining, evens out the fat that you're losing. So if you're doing something every day, to become a better version of yourself, and becoming healthier, that's all that matters. If youre doing better than you were yesterday, then f*** what the scale says, because if you keep on going like that, evetually you will see clear results and maybe even achieve your dream physique. NOW BUY THE DAMN COOKBOOK!!!

Coach Gregg is absolutely correct about ramping up. I made the huge mistake of doing a major workout after I had been relatively sedentary for 6 months. I ended up making my entire body so sore and in pain that I ended up catching a virus and being sick for much longer than normal. My body hurt and did t heal for almost a month. The next time I worked out I did a quarter of the load and was able to build up slowly.

Hey Greg! Stay at home mom of two here, I home-school my oldest and he is on the autism spectrum, my youngest is a year old. Between taking care of them and always cooking, cleaning, and barely finding time to shower and groom myself, I'm still trying to make myself a priority and trying to improve my fitness and eating habits. My husband works full-time and is exhausted when he gets home, so I have little to no help. I always seem put my family first before my own goals, and have been breastfeeding for the past year and a half with a very clingy baby who was not a good sleeper for the first year of her life. I sunk into a deep depression starting around the time I started showing in my most recent pregnancy. With my first child, I got up to 168 lbs before giving birth. I worked out and dieted over several years to a healthy, maintainable 135 lbs. I was happy and had decent self-confidence. With my second, I was 172 lbs the day before I gave birth. I'm 150 now, but I've been wanting so badly to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, or maybe even my ultimate goal of 125 lbs. More than the number on the scale, I just want to feel happy with the way I look. I want to be able to wear anything and totally rock it. I've got decent muscle mass on my frame and I'm pretty strong for the average girl my age (I've always loved working out, and lifting heavy!), so I feel like I have decent potential if I can keep myself fully immersed in the right mindset. I've been working out for an hour each night after my husband gets home for the past few months and I'm already feeling better. My schedule doesn't always work perfectly, and there are some nights I'm unable to make it to the gym, but I'm trying to stick to upper body strength training twice per week, lower body strength training twice per week, and cardio two to three times per week. I'm also counting my calories and making sure to eat enough protein, though I've fudged it up more than a few times. I'm still trying to do the best I can, regardless of the mistakes I've made here and there. I just want to say that I love your videos and you really motivate me. Being so isolated at home without much interaction with the outside world, it's so easy to just throw in the towel and say that my days of looking good are over. And I know looks aren't everything, but it's people like you that inspire me and help keep me from giving up on my fitness goals. Thanks for what you do.

The most important part of working out is where it becomes a habit . I’ve been working out for a little bit more than 4 months 6 times a week . At first I was really concerned with how slow I was losing weight . 12 pounds in 4 months . All blood tests are good except from a tiny bit fatty liver because of fat . Otherwise I would have already given up . The thing is tho that a few years ago I lost 60 pounds in 3 months after extreme fasting and bad sleep deprivation . I think this must have destroyed my metabolism . But I still have faith that it’s gonna work . I’m a smoker I kind of hate aerobic but I can tell I’m doing good both doing weights and aerobic everyday . If you believe it’s gonna work. It’s gonna work . Because of this habit tho I’ve cut off sweets I’ve cut off junk food and beverages whichs a huge achievement for me . For now I only have 1 cheat day a week just to keep my nutrition plan sustainable . Of course my main concern is getting the amount of protein my body needs everyday through supplements too . It’s a tough journey with no destination

I remember when I tried jogging up a hill and bc I lift and had muscles I figured I'd have no problem doing it. Low and behold I learned my cardio was shit. So when I went to the gym I decided to hit the cardio machines and do interval training. I remembered for health and fitness class for college that this was a great way to begin training yourself. So on the cardio machines I'd do 2 min of slow pace then followed by 2 min of a fast pace totalling to 10 min each time at the gym. Then after a week upped to 2x at the gym. Then 2 weeks passed I noticed something, I wasn't huffing and puffing after each fast pace 2 min marks, and it got to the point where I could actually jog/run for 10 min straight with no issues. I was so proud of myself because I recalled struggling, especially in middle school and high school, running a mile non stop under 6 min was not possible. From this experience I learned you really need to start slow and pace yourself to a little bit more intensity because eventually you'll reach that goal you wanted without making consequential sacrifices.

I went 225-160 at 5'10. Started out with steady weight training but too much repetitive motion not enough variation caused me a couple injuries. So I stopped weight training in February cause of the pain and now I'm skinny fat at 160, No abs. Could keep losing weight through dieting cardio which I have no struggles with but I've lost the will to keep cutting. Seems like I'm getting too skinny, not shredded. My injuries aren't getting any better so I'm gonna have to figure out something here. Just saying, take your time and don't do what I did. Drastic deficits, repetitive training, too much cardio. Good luck bro. You got this.

I definitely went through a phase where I was tackling my weight loss through dieting and I felt tired, groggy, and irritable. I was just miserable and didn't feel good. The worst part was that I wasn't even doing anything for my fitness. I lost maybe 20 pounds over three months and just gave up and gained it all back. Three months ago I discovered rock climbing and I actually haven't lost more than 5 pounds because I've been main gaining. My body fat percentage is down, and my biceps, chest, and back are getting pretty big, I can tell that by just looking in the mirror, but what's crazy is climbing has got me hiking and riding my bike more than ever and I just feel great. I imagine when I finally hit my goals I'll have lost 20-30 pounds, but as opposed to last time, I'm in absolutely zero rush to get there. I'm climbing 3-4 times a week and biking almost daily just to get around. I drop the bike on days where my legs are too sore and just walk, occasionally drive if the weather is bad. The last thing I want to say is, thank you for your emphasis on FUN when losing weight. THAT is what I was missing. Everyone said to get in the gym and lift and if that works for them awesome, but it's just not nearly creative enough for me, I love the problem solving aspect of climbing and that's why it works for me. Thanks for showing what a good coach looks like.

Then senior year I stopping playing ball and I was getting an eating disorder over the fear of gaining weight so I got a gym membership and started rock climbing. The main sport has changed over the years between climbing and basketball or cycling, but the sport has always kept me in the gym/ a second sport 2-4 times per week to get better at the thing I love to do. Easier to do maintenance when you have a performance goal and I think and the social aspect of sports also helps keep you accountable for your health.

It's so easy to add some vegetables to every meal and now I'm eating so many fruits and vegetables that I'm unable to eat lots of unhealthy foods. Bought a pack of cookies and in the past I would eat the whole pack (like 10 cookies) but now with all the additional fruits and vegetables I ate 2 cookies because I was full. I'm eating more volume overall to a point where people wonder how I'm losing weight while eating those huge meals. Having prepped food and ingredients helped me to make healthier meals while being less motivated. So when I'm motivated I prepare foods and ingredients for the the days I want to be lazy or less motivated.

i've done this too when i started 2 years ago thanks to advice from a trainer people recommended to me. It was only a few months ago i stopped looking at the scale and looked back at my body, i still look better then i did when i started but i've not lost the fat i wanted. Slowly but surely builing up my calories and lifting again and i feel like i do have enrgie now, i just didn't eat enough, i hope that when i'm able to start dropping the calories little by little in a few weeks i'll finally start seeing the progress again.

I'm currently losing about one pound a week, It doesn't even feel like a diet it's so easy. This guy will put back on all the weight, it's impossible for him not to after this diet.

Not impossible at all just far more unlikely than following a sustainable diet. Different things work for different people we are individuals that have individual needs and preferences. I personally fast just drinking water every Monday and although this isn’t what Greg preaches it’s worked amazingly for me.

@@elliottrichardson8213 My main consideration is that his insane weight loss has led to him losing ALOT of muscle, As a result decreasing his metabolism and when he goes back to eating normally he'll gain the weight back fast as a consequence. We see the same thing on that TV show "The biggest looser". I prefer to think of it as less about losing weight and more about maintaining muscle mass. Heck, if you do it right you can even gain some muscle whilst in a calorie deficit.

it’s crazy too because every single one of their before and after “transformations” just goes back to looking like the before 2 months later. It’s so obvious that this weight loss journey is just for publicity and didn’t ingrain any actual healthy eating habits or propelled any of them to take fitness seriously

50 lbs in 6 months is something I managed myself (actually in 5 months, mid-July to mid-Dec) 103kg to 80kg (227pounds to 176pounds) (For those curious, at 183cm/6ft tall) The difference being that I gradually went about increasing my cardio, training frequency, swapping out one ingredient at a time for healthier options for my meals over time etc. Gradually set up and adjusted me strenght training to my liking since Dec, surprisingly kept losing weight and went down to 75kg last month. Today I'm happily at ~74kgs, enjoying my "diet" (nutrition "plan", with occasional "smart cheat days") and enjoying the process, finally seeing a 6pack (maybe an 8-pack, actually!) Ever since Jan/Feb my plan was to maingain, which I now seem to have in check, increasing muscle mass/definition, strength, and looking leaner. All about small changes and tweaks, one at a time. Holding ourself accountable on cheat days, but also allowing them, in moderation. That's my story so far at least, looking forward to my first summer having abs to show off now! :D

This is my dream. Being a minor I'm not necessarily able to make a plan that can be executed perfectly, even if my parents had the money. From the wash I see it I can only really achieve anything even close in the next 2-3 years of my life and honestly I think I took this path wrong. Initially I lost 3kg in a week, shirts that I stopped wearing years ago because I could not wear them with my stomach and man tits showing. I went to a friend's house and noticed I could actually wear it, it was insane, even without a gym. But there was a catch, I ate twice a day (this was normal, but what I ate twice in a day was pretty fat food and then I always snacked along the day hence why I was 91-94KG, by the time I started the weight loss I was 91), and the food I ate twice a day wasnt something I enjoyed either, oddly enough It was fun and good then a week later, basically now I ate once a day because my appetite died then in the middle of night I binge eat a little, now I'm back to 91kg. Honestly you're pretty inspiring and if you could drop some more advice I'll really appreciate it, specifically on how you found a good diet because I find it quite interesting how you lost more weight while not going through such an extreme weight loss routine. Thank you.

@@putent9623 Well, first things first I started comparing calories in food, and added it up compared to what I would "need" in a day (For example: 2500 calories) Then I started measuring meals and a rough estimate of calories in them, in the beginning I could get away with somewhat unhealthy food choices. As things progressed I figured out alternative foods/ingredients with less calories and more filling. Some examples would be burgers, now having plain chicken filets (with a spice blend) instead of crispy chicken patties, as one example. Instead of full fat cheeses and mayo, I now have cottage cheese for a lot of things, also sauces and oils, be mindful of those! Instead of fried foods I'm all-baked for those, as for "diet", many say that's temporary, for me this a life-long sustainable nutrition plan in the making. A major contributor to my progress has been consistency and portion control, gradually learning proper portion sizes for when I go out for pizza etc. And yes, "cheat days" happen (For me ~once a month) but it's all about knowing control and keeping consistent to your overall nutrition plan/ideas. Some of my favourite things in my "plan": Scheduled meals, to me it's 4 times a day, a slice of bread w/ egg breakfast, 2-3 slices with low-calorie spread of choice for lunch, dinner I have a single "fair-sized" portioned plate of what I want that day, and then pre-workout/daily snack, actually my favourite: 150g Greek Yoghurt with 1 scoop (36g) of protein powder of choice (chocolate for me) 1 portion oats (40g) and a banana! To curb hunger I live off of diet soda, I'm terrible at drinking plain water unless exercising, and I don't drink coffee either :p And because I allow myself and can, I have a cup (1/3rd) of a zero calorie energy drink of choice (To me it's Monster Zero or Ultra series of choice :p) As for scheduled meals and portion sizes: Being strict with this helps me control hunger signals, and more easily ignoring boredom-hunger. Also keeping snacks to a minimum/not in my house also has helped me a ton, that's some of my personal tricks at least. That's as much as I can think of right now, good luck!

Same height, same weight, not doing much tho, just, trying not to overeat is sufficient for me, I run from time to time, love to walk, that's it. What I would probably advise to do is... Cut the quantities of food, like, I have been eating less than before and I lost weight (which is good), and it's easier to maintain that way because you are cutting of quantity, not on the food itself. And to stop using your car (if you have one) or getting lifts by your parents/friends, just walk there or go by bike... I'm maintaining this weight (I was 84kg during the peak of the pandemic in 2021)
