I gotta say, as someone who was obese and had to lose a lot of weight, overcoming my prior "relationship" with food was a massive step in losing weight. Psychologically, food was a source of comfort for me, it tasted good and felt good, so I could avoid the problems in my life. I know it can sound a little goofy, but a lot of people have to overcome this psychological block in order to lose weight healthily and keep it off.

Greg I love your content and think you're right on mostly everything but I think your stance on people's relationship with food is a bit of a blindspot for you. People absolutely have relationships with foods, they use them as coping mechanism, and I think you've even acknowledged this point in other videos. It's not as easy for some to have a detached approach to food and see it as sustenance, or fuel and thus manage it accordingly so they can stop hurting themselves with it. People can have toxic relationships with foods as they can with drugs, or alcohol, or whatever thing they use to escape from the world. It's the only aspect of your advice for people that I think can miss the mark because it comes off a little dismissive. But like I said I think just about everything else is solid, and I truly believe your recipes can help them especially as much as theyve helped me lose 40 lbs.

You're misunderstanding what it means to have a relationship with food. Just because it's not in a sexual capacity, it's still something everyone has to do. Obviously some people have a more balanced approach than others, but it's still something necessary to life that can kill us or make us stronger depending on our relationship with it. Sex in and of itself is something else we have a relationship with. While it may not be a thing necessary to live, it's pretty clear it's healthy to have it. However, it can still be unhealthy when used in excess.

Hi Greg. 1- Please stop pretending to ignore the definition of the word relationship as it was only about people, it makes you sound really moronic and discredit your argument, which is debatable. 2 - Wasting food is not ok no matter what, it's a choice for sure, but not ok, it's a spoiled north american very spread culture but it just makes you look like spoiled babies wearing grownups clothes 3 - Cardio vs Weightlifting: why not mentionning the fact that increased muscle mass and increased connected muscle fibers increase the resting base metabolism, out of the catabolism anabolism process. It doesn't mean than cardio burns less calories, but it's an important added factor of the global idea of why lifting weights is beneficial to burn more calories.

When you look up the definition of the word “relationship” this is what comes up: “the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.” This means that there aren’t necessarily feelings involved. Well intermittent fasting certainly does work for some, like myself. It increased my tolerance for hunger hormones and now, while not fasting, I eat less food then before. It helped me getting my hunger leveled out, so now I'm hungry exactly for my maintenance. But it's not something I would do long term.

@@yt_abc3029 I think thats just part of his yt persona, which I don't really like, but I think is fine, kinda like Elgin. I agree about him making some really pointless points though, like his definition of relationship. I think having your own definition of a term to better communicate your point is fine, but here it doesn't work, humans most definitely have a strong connection to food, and I think that relationship is a very valid and useful word to communicate that relation.

Relationship doesn't really just mean a romantic relationship. To get into semantics you can have a relationship with anything that you have a connection with, and everyone living has some connection with food whether it good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Great video though!

4:09 Intermittent Fasting has been shown to be as beneficial as caloric restriction for losing fat mass and retaining fat free mass. Furthermore, Coach Greg only speaks of time restricted feeding which does have benefits while there are other forms of intermittent fasting such as alternate day fasting which seems to be more popular in research studies. Either way, intermittent fasting may be equivalent to caloric redirection in terms of body composition but definitely not quality of life (such as headaches, feeling hungry, etc.) How do I know this? I once tried arguing that intermittent fasting was not as beneficial as caloric restriction for improving body composition and quickly learned that was not the case. If anyone wants articles, feel free to @me.

I agree with Greg Doucette 99.8% of the time but I wasn't so of sure of the "We aren't in relationships with food" comment because it took what Dr. Mike was saying out of context. The word relationship extends more than boyfriend girlfriend. The word can be used to describe correlation and habits. If you have a bad relationship with food, it could mean that you view food as something to stay away from at all costs, or something that will help you with your problems, both instances described here are eating disorders. Doctor Mike is saying that for some who fast during the day, the idea of food changes into a negative way where food is seen as wrongfully negative. To see food itself as something being the root to all of your problems is definitely a negative relationship, and Dr. Mike is saying that fasting can contribute to that mindset.

I get that it’s just a pet peeve of yours, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people saying “relationship with food”. Obviously we all know what they mean. Not a romantic relationship, just the way the view it, the way they think about it, their eating habits. Basically.. their relationship with it. It’s used for a lack of a better term. Disordered eating is a bad relationship. Feeling bad about eating, binge eating, all of these practices mean that you have a bad relationship with food.
