If possible before removing freeze out plugs in head block off all water ways and fill with vinegar via some opening. Let set for a few days and all additional rust will be removed from passages. Option two if you have a large pan/vat to immerse entire head in vinegar, with freeze out plugs removed, all rust will be removed. Patience with vinegar and get great results

butch johnson - I think I can still soak it. Wonder if that vinegar would hurt the valves, valve guides, etc,????

@@Texasknowhow Vinegar is a mild acid but I don't think it would have any impact on valves/guides. Just my opinion.

GREAT reminder about tap types I forgot about, BTW, I've taken a straw sized hose & stepped it down & attached to a vacuum to do such, also while everything is unbuttoned you could run one of those snake cameras with a light into those holes.

Once you get as much of the loose crap out of the water jacket as you can. I like to use vinegar and let it soak in there. Then just flush the crap out of it with fresh clean water. It's makes a hell of difference in how clean you can get it.

Texasknowhow yeah one of the sweetest ways to clean a set of hand files, soaking for about an hour and a half, take a wire brush too them, soap and water rinsing off real good, dry them, hose them down with WD-40, wrap them in wax paper & clean shop rag,

I think I would have found a 4.9 liter, 300 Six from a early 90's truck and used the long block. They almost never die so every bone yard has them cheap and it would be a bolt in.

Check this company out, Gano Filter. I've been using their filter on my 79 F150 for a few years. It removes a lot of the metal flakes from the block www.ganofilters.com/
