#61 Ready For The Next Step | Renovating an Abandoned Stone House in Italy

We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.

I love that you're not sparing on the insulation, in the inside walls too. I understand it's mostly as a sound buffer, but sometimes it's good to not have to heat up all parts of the house! So much work and hours a week goes into this, congrats on your conviction to see this through :) it could be neat if you write on screen day 1, day 2 of filming, so it gives us a better overview that this really isn't as easy as it looks! Just a suggestion. Great job guys.

You two have design training, and I respect your design decisions…mostly. Moving the bedroom wall out to gain a little space-I get it. Extending it through the stone doorway, however, seems like a bad decision. There’s just no way to pull that off and make it look good. Walls that infringe on doors and windows are always an eyesore.

If I were to consider renovating a stone house like this, I would find myself in deep contemplation. This is because I have a profound affinity for stone walls and would like to appreciate them not only on the exterior of the house but also in at least one interior space. However, living in Korea, where the climate varies extremely throughout the year, requires the necessity of enclosing the entire house with thick external insulation to combat the elements effectively. While internal insulation is possible, it comes with the drawback of reducing interior space, and such interiors might limit the enjoyment of the house's unique material characteristics, apart from the exposed roof and structural elements.

I love your videos !! I have watched most of them. I have a few questions: 1. At the beginning, did you check the foundation to see if it will take the load, etc. ? 2. You have beautiful terraces !! Someone did a lot of work at some point. How old is the structure ? I can see grapes growing on the terraces !! 3. Is there a video that shows your house complete ? Hello and thank you for your comment! We believe this terraces to be 3 to 4 centuries old, while the house could be 200 years old, but there is no way to know for sure. The house is not finish yet but you can follow our weekly video updates on our channel! ☺️

Good question 😉 We won't be using the hemp and lime mix. Instead we are thinking to use a casein or clay paint!

Code here is when screwing drywall your not allowed to break the paper with the screws they are to be perfectly deep with a screw gun not a drill.

No we won't, with this kind of fermacell boards the resistance to dilatation is taken care of by the glue that we applied between each board!

ciao ragazzi personalmente avrei evitato di chiudere con pareti fisse la seconda stanza da letto.Avrei optato per una parete scorrevole alla giapponese realizzata con materiali naturali, sono bellissime, inserendo un divano letto in modo che avreste potuto godere anche di quello spazio e quella luce/vista esterna quando non ci fossero stati ospiti mantenendo aperta la stanza. Un abbraccio

I would be concerned with the wooden frame shrinking as it ages, although your environment is drier and more temperate then mine. Also, Fermacell appears to be superior to gypsum board in every way. In the worst cast, you could inject more adhesive with a hypodermic needle in the few cracks as they develop.

You are right! But the Fermacell can be installed on a wooden structure, the manufacturer advice in this case is to use longer screws but other than that it should be fine 🤗 also we used dry wood to limitate the deformation!
